CU a basketball school?

Can anyone see CU becoming a basketball school?

Given that in the Pac-12, two schools that have a deep history in basketball instead of football are Arizona and Utah...I'm still trying to figure out ASU basketball but that will be another time...and could it have some kind of impact on CU basketball since they are our most likely rivals in the Pac-12? Our biggest rival in the Big 12 was Nebraska not either Kansas school and the Huskers are known for football not basketball and now we are not in the same conference as the Knowledge Boys.

The new practice facility is the most significant facility construction for athletic training since the Dal Ward Center and it could help us get strong in basketball over the long run.

It might have been just a year but Tad Boyle seems to be the man for the long term future of CU basketball.

Yes. And will. In Tad we Trust.

They haven't been doing well lately but it is hard to find a tradition much deeper than UCLA, SC has had some decent teams as well.

That said the potential does exist for CU to build a program that will do well over the long term in the PAC 12. The strength and depth of the conference certainly don't match what we faced in the Big XII. The PAC doesn't have a Kansas, a school that will be a NC contender or at least mentioned most years and that gets multiple top 50 recruits each year. The depth of the Big XII has been such that a very good team could be contending for 5th in the conference in a lot of years, that same team in the PAC would be fighting for 2nd or 3rd.

Being in the PAC should also give CU better access to the California recruiting pool that we need to be successful. CU has never been consistent in pulling quality BB recruits out of Texas or the midwest.

UCLA, although down the last couple years, has a basketball tradition matched by only a handful of schools, and has won more national championships than any other school.

agreed - UCLA is one of THE schools in the nation when it comes to history and prestige. The Pac 12 is an excellent basketball conference, and it can help CU in terms of recruiting.

However, CU is a football school, and football overshadows all other sports when it comes to money and popularity. CU will never be a basketball school, and as much as I love basketball, I don't want CU to be known as a basketball school. That'd mean our football team waned. CU can become a solid basketball program, but I don't imagine that the two factors of great bball play and poor football play will last over a long period of time.

Ucla set a standard of excellence that others are still trying to achieve -- and probably won't. Kentucky has a long history as does Kansas. Duke has been really good for 20 years. UNC has a long history, but oddly, it took a long time to get over the hurdle and win the big one.

None of the "bigs" has 10 NC's. No one has the # of consecutive titles. And they've added three since that amazing run.

I think it's really amazing to think that the Buffs will be playing games in Pauley Pavillion. Conference games. We'll be doing battle in the shrine of college hoops.

I hope we go there and kick their azz.

Can Boise St. ever be a football school? It takes commitment and a little luck.

Depends on what you mean by a "basketball school". I think we can be a very good program that consistently makes the NCAAs, excites fans during the football offseason, has a good core of hardcore fans, and makes the school a bunch of money every year. But football is and will always be king... as it should. That's the culture of the state and it's where the money is.

Well said. I don't want CU to be a basketball school. I want it to be a football school with a solid basketball program. Examples of basketball schools are Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas and Indiana.

given what appear to be the driving forces of tomorrow's mens sports revenue (if the events of the last 14 months or so are any indicator).....the longterm viability of being a "basketball school" may be a bit iffy. KU is as blue-blooded as they come and "being KU" didn't get you much interest in the super-conference reshuffle part 1. also, according to a Mizzou guy i know, one of the reasons KU got less interest than MU from the Big Ten was KU offers a very small # sports compared to MU and Big Ten schools. i can't confirm this but would seem to be a function of having a limited, hoops mostly revenue stream. even though MU was at a high point (so to speak) with the recent Pinkel teams and Anderson into the Elite 8, if you can get a legendary program (KU) that also fits the AAU Big Ten profile....why even consider a mostly average if not underachieving MU set of programs. adding NU in football, KU in hoops takes a big chunk of prestige out the Big 8/XII/SWC alignments.

while i'd love to see CU established as a team that can be expected to make the NCAA year in/year out and make some noise from time to time.....and have waited my whole life for it....seems like football is driving this train into re-organization....college athletics moving out of the stewardship of the NCAA as a governing body etc. not sure what the future holds for basketball schools...
