'16 WBB WA G Quinessa Caylao-Do (Signed to Colorado)

It looks like CU received a commitment today from a 5'9" guard/wing from Bellevue High School, WA. Congrats Quinessa!!! Welcome to CU! Go Buffs!!!

Things I have found so far-

Per Maxpreps (see link below), Ms. Caylao-Do is 5-8 or 5'9" (depending on the source) whose 1st position is listed as shooting guard. She was also listed as a guard/ wing somewhere.

(Her team only seems to report point stats (for 25 of 29 games played) in Maxpreps. From that, looks like she led her team last year with 13.3 points per game.)

Note- it also says she goes to Bellevue HS. Don't know for sure which is accurate? I do find articles showing that she definitely went to Beamer last year. Assume Bellevue may have been her school early on in her high school years?)

She must have had a good state tournament last season, as she was named 1st Team All Tournament as she helped her team to a best ever 3rd place finish in 4A. (http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/high-school/state-basketball-all-tournament-teams/)

Exactly. I don't get it at all. And I say this knowing that it is much harder to find and recruit post players than guards. But if she has signed it means that barring attrition the Buffs will have 6 guards on the roster next season (1 junior, 3 sophomores and 2 freshmen).

Not so much in terms of numbers, but in terms of talent the Buffs desperately need post players with offensive skills.

It seems that Lappe & Co. are going with a a scheme that includes very mobile "power" forwards that have a lot of perimeter skills. So perhaps she looks at Ellis and Burich both as viable candidates at the 4 in addition to Beard-Fails. They are also candidates to play at the 3. Just musing here, but perhaps we are looking at an offense that has four perimeter players and one post/power forward?

Regardless, a talented post player that is a threat to score down low would really help.

As for the perimeter, the team will be in good hands over the next four seasons with Robinson and Leonard in the backcourt.
 
I'm going to defer to MarkW and buffgal on this one as you two are MUCH smarter than I am when it comes to the women's game, but I like getting lots of PG's. Yes, I'd like to see a big in there too, but guards can carry the team at times. Is it not similar to the men's game in which the more ball handlers you have, the more flexibility you have?
 
We clearly need good guards, especially good ball handlers. The past few years have clearly shown that. But how do the coaches plan to play against the 6'4" to 6'8" centers that are on every WBB roster in the PAC 12? Zoe Correal can't do that by herself for 40 minutes a game next season.

I've found that in the men's game you're better off playing a bunch of guys in the 6'6" to 6'8" range along with a great PG than you are trying to play a traditional positions 1-5 lineup... if you're not able to recruit 5s that are competitive with other team's 5s. A stiff is still a stiff even if he's 7 feet tall. Better off creating matchup problems in other ways instead of accepting a straight up disadvantage.

Does Lappe not remember just how big the centers are in the Pac 12, not only in height, but also in width? None of our players can play against them for 40 minutes next season.

She isn't able to recruit good post players and I'm not sure how this 2 player class plus Freeman will rank.

Rice and Caylao-Do said they are besties on Instagram. They definitely know each other. They better be fast if we are going to rely on harassing the talented post players in the Pac 12. I do not see that working.

Agreed about the lack of good post players that have come to Boulder since this staff has been here. It's been nil. And I don't see how the Buffs can be competitive in conference play without one or two talented post players.

I don't think there needs to be a traditional, 1-2-3-4 and 5 for the team to be successful, but they do need post players that are over 6-2 or so to play the 5 and be a threat down low on offense as well as defend.

At the same time I agree that it's important to have a number of good point guards. Next season CU will have a number of them, the best will most likely be the two that are already on the team - Kennedy Leonard and Alexis Robinson.

As for how this class of '16 will be ranked, not very high. Neither Rice or Caylow-Do are considered top 100 prospects.

Freeman was in the top 100 coming out of high school when she signed with Louisville.
 
I am happy with the point guard position recruiting, but not the post recruiting.

Lappe's successful teams were mostly players recruited by KMM.
 
I think the issue is more than just not recruiting good post players, it's overall quality of the recruits. With the exception of first group brought in by Lappe (Reese, Roberson, etc.) and the current group of freshmen there just haven't been enough Pac 12 caliber players to keep the Buffs competitive.

Next season, assuming no attrition, CU will have six guards on the roster. In this area it seems that Buffs will have a fair amount of talent. It's everywhere else, including the post where they will either lack talent and/or depth. Swan will obviously graduate, are there any players on the roster or coming in that have anywhere near the level of talent she does?

Normally I am not so public in my doubts, but I fear that mediocre results of the last few seasons will be the norm rather than the exception.

Thanks for posting this but this should really have it's own thread. I wonder if the mods could move this? It gets hard to follow when we mix topics and there is probably more info on this young lady, especially with her personal relationship with a young NBA man and her background playing with different HS programs.
