'20 CO SG Luke O'Brien (SIGNED to COLORADO)

Nice! That's a hard to one to get, and I'm wayyyyyy too low on the totem pole for it. One of my mentors graduated from Columbine in the mid 90s-so the Chatfield boys' game was kind of a bucket list type of game for him to work. He's gone deep in the playoffs for a few years running now, and he finally got the boys game for the first time last year. Hazing? hahahaha I had to have an Aurora cop escort me out of Overland last year (had their boys at home v. Cherry Creek).

LOB was a little inconsistent last season IMO-he'd go off on somebody like Chatfield, but wasn't much of a factor when they played Highlands Ranch and had a fairly quiet 21 points the last time I had them against Mountain Vista last year.
The hazing was more against the other school, not so much the officials. Chatfield had administrative people all through the student section trying to keep them under control. Still some brutal heckling.

I played a basketball game against Central Catholic where we had to have a police escort to the bus after the game, and we had more cops at our football games against Holy Family than any public school we played. Lots of bad blood there.

In a gym like Columbine's, I can't hear anything in the stands......that should be a fairly big game to boot so you could yell whatever you'd want and I probably wont hear it.
Haha I think I said this earlier, but if you were reffing Columbine games when I graduated in 2012 I probably yelled at you while I was planning. I was not the nicest to the refs.

So is this kid involved in any AAU competitions outside the state of CO? Is there any chance somebody outside the state gives him an offer?

He does, but Rivals doesn't show anything other than the three offers in the OP. Looks to me like he's a lock for CU.

Wasn't. Picked it back up last year-I haven't had a job where I can leave at 2:30 to work a 4pm freshman tip. Now, I do.

He's expected to sign tomorrow when the early signing period opens so there shouldn't be much to worry about.

I did their lowers tonight v. Highlands Ranch-and Tad was there! Columbine won the varsity game 49-36 and Luke had 21.
I havent seen Luke play this season but in looking at stats after 3 games, he's scored 26, 28 and 21 all in low scoring games. But so far he is is just 3-21 on 3 pointers...yikes!

He's doing a much better job of attacking the hoop this year than he was last year. I can live with the iffy 3 numbers if he's willing to attack the rim like he has so far this year. Still gotta gain weight when he gets to Boulder though.

Edit: Recruit’s thread is not the place for this stuff. Let’s give it a rest and keep this stuff out of these threads . TIA. - Buffnik

Really bad attempt at humor. Understood. Really excited about the buff hoops team this year and the two Colorado boys coming on board

On the 3 for 21 I’d like to know more info about the context on this before I get concerned. He may be having to force them up over double teams or late in shot clock to bail his team out. He also could just be slumping through a small sample size. It’s something to watch but not be concerned about yet.

It's not good, certainly. I'd have expected more than double the number of makes. But as you're saying, context matters. If he's 3/21 on catch-and-shoot 3s, it's a slump. Hell, for all we know there are even a couple 3 quarter court heaves at the end of halves in there along with the stuff you brought up -- making the raw numbers mostly irrelevant. Everything I've heard about Luke is that he's a good shooter and the little I've watched of him has shown a pretty efficient stroke.

Here's what I can tell you-Overland and HR (both of whom are among the best in 5A boys hoops here) were not doubling him regularly, and we don't use shot clocks in high school in CO so that's not an issue. We'll see how the rest of his season goes-I have them one more time that I know of, and I may try and go see them one more time if my schedule allows. He's more aggressive offensively (settled for jumpers way more than I'd have liked to see LY) from what I've seen the last two weeks from what I've seen, and I think that's big.

If any Denver metro area ABers are interested in watching LOB against quality competition, they're playing Rangeview (1/4) and Legend (1/6) coming out of the gate after the holiday break. Both those teams are ranked (Rangeview's #1 in 5A) and both the games are at Columbine. I'm somewhere else the morning of the 4th for an LL double, but I'm thinking about going to Rangeview-Columbine as a fan if my games allow.

I've only seen LOB play once and it was last season. So I am planning to see a few games. His stroke looked good LY, reasonably quick release and often a foot or more beyond the arc with ease so I was surprised at his early struggles. Good that he is finding other ways to score, plus he's had 14, 16 and 6 rebounds.

Anyone going to the #7 Columbine at #2 Rangeview (Aurora) game this afternoon? I cant..ridiculous case of flu. Rangeview was 5A champ last year with all except 3 players returning. Will be interesting to see LOB against good and athletic talent.

I am still hoping that the 3 point % is some sort of aberration, but the # is now in decline for a 3rd consecutive year. I think it is great that he is more aggressive, but if he is going to be a meaningful contributor at CU isn't he going to have to score from the perimeter? He never struck me as a guy who will consistently be getting to the basket in Pac12 games. Seems like a majority of his skill development focus should be on scoring from the perimeter.

Haven't seen a box score-but LOB and Columbine had to beat Ralston Valley at home tonight to keep their Jeffco league title hopes alive, and they did.

Anybody seen LOB play this year? Statwise he's 25.7ppg, 12.2reb. Supposedly hes more aggressive offensively but 3pt shooting % down every year since frosh year. I saw him one game last year and form and release looked fine
Puzzle.

Just fyi update. And maybe HS bb, even if in the states top class, means little. LOB avgs 26.6 (team 61) and 12.6 reb (29.9). Season 3pt % is inexplicably a horrendous 29%, 61% from 2 and 77 on FT. Last 3 game stats: Pts. 30,34,24. Reb 13,13,20. 3pt. 3/7, 3/7,2/4. The 2 games prior he was 0/9! Team is 18-3 with 9 Ws in a row. I still think he can be a valuable asset but likely needs a couple of years to mature under a university program. Lots of good teams plan on that kind of development. We certainly have that luxury if MW and TB come back. If not, well we likely take a big step back anyway.
