2018 Recruiting Recap and notes (with a rant)

If I’d have given up as easily as you, I’d still be single. Listen, what everyone is trying to tell you is that there is little risk in recruiting Nevada and a potentially high reward. CU is just now returning to relevance. You have to sort of throw out results over the last few years. Are you telling us that if you wer in charge you would ignore kids in Nevada because of past failures there?

The inner city LA kids have been migrating east to the Inland Empire and that has now extended to Phoenix and Las Vegas. The African American population has been growing there much faster than Colorado.

Where we have already found success and/or other areas where we haven't put much effort into.

I wouldn't be opposed to Nevada if we had any worthwhile results there but there is a point where you say this isn't worth it. I've seen enough to say that.

I would go by what I stated earlier. If a kid has ties to Colorado or shows a legitimate interest in CU then yes, I hop of a plane and put some effort into him. Lacking those considerations we can go other places that also have a potential high reward that actually have shown results for us.

If you had continued to pursue that girl that turned you down over and over and eventually married the Army guy you would still be single as well. You figured out you were wasting your time and your efforts other directions ended up in your wife. (Who by the way is still with you while the other girl is on husband #3 and bankrupted the first two with her shopping addiction.)

No argument that the players are there but so far despite our efforts they ain't comin' here. That is the point. I don't know why they aren't but we have made the efforts with close to zero results. There are other places our time would be better spent.

The issue is the staff is not making it a priority. LV produces double the talent that almost the whole state of Colorado does. If you make it a priority and still fail, then you can make this point.
 
I know the key word is focus and I agree with that. Why would you ignore the border states of Kansas, Nebraska, and even Oklahoma? Lots of future OL and DL born there every day. I get the population centers tend to be on the eastern side of those states, but it is still a car ride away.

Who is long graduated, had a long and productive NFL career, and is now in the media. My point made, we just haven't seen enough results to justify the effort. When you have to go that far back it shows you are reaching.

It also shows that CU has not hired anyone with ties to the area. Those are LA guys who transfer to the powerhouse programs, LDS members, local Vegas guys and a good sized Poly/Hawaiian culture (they sometimes call Las Vegas the 9th island). No one on the CU staff checks these boxes to cut through the noise as a recruiter there. Those are all boxes I'd like to see checked this month with the new hires.
 
I understand what Mtn is putting out, we had a g string's chance in a snow storm of getting Martel and came away feeling used. At the same time you can't just shut down recruiting an area because of history, get the first one and build a future. This is why I'm so encouraged with the uptick in recruiting TX, we're mining a state that is an outlier of the footprint and because of the abundance of talent CU has a better than average chance of securing the commit. Recruiting against every one in the PAC for the same players in CA has led to us getting leftovers several times and we're already behind the eight ball from the start.
Let's face it we lost the Poly when Cabral left and no one has come close to achieving the success he did.
I find it interesting that neither Oregon or Wash. put's out any more D1 type players than CO. yet they both have figured out recruiting other than the obvious $$$.

Crazy concept. Imagine actually hiring recruiters who *gasp* have ties to a particular recruiting area instead of just forcing the fit.
 
Roper seems to fill a need as a high level QB coach.

However, other moves need to be made to beef up recruiting. Roper brings next to nothing on the trail, especially within the footprint.

Got to wonder how little MacIntyre cares about hiring guys for recruiting acumen.

Would love someone with Poly heritage who is a dynamite recruiter. Poly recruiting has taken a big step back. This community could and should be a focus of increased recruiting effort.

What's Troy Polamalu up to these days? He make a good Poly recruiter?
 
Is recruiting the Poly community really just about having a recruiter with ties? I would say that there isn't a "culture" at CU that welcomes these young men. We have no "Ohana" for them to be welcomed into anymore.

When Cabral (and others) were here they had built a community that welcomed these guys. He would have them over to eat dinner, mingle with other Polynesians in the Boulder community, students, etc. If you know anything about Utah or Washington you know what investment the school, team, coaches, and community make to make those kids (and their families) feel comfortable in their new surroundings.

I would argue that after Cabral left, we kept on recruiting Poly areas with some recruiters with connections but we had many bad off the field incidents because there was no Ohana surrounding those guys and they didn't fit in well.

Of course, you can always find some that don't want that for their college experience; but by and large I would say the places with the most success in Poly recruiting figured this out.

Not having a staff member with that cultural background, and not having "many" kids on the team, plus a small local community works against us, but it a good staff recruiter would fix that. See what Big Joe did up at WSU. We had a big opportunity when Sefo was the top Poly QB in the country....

Well for every 90 minute flight x 2, and 8 hours visiting 4 schools, you could fly to Miami, and, umm meet with a few people near the airport and fly back?
 
I was looking at the San Diego State class and it has 3 Las Vegas guys. While I realize they are not P5, they did beat both Stanford and ASU this year, so they have some players for sure. So I thought I'd take a look.

Rivals shows 21 guys from 2018 have committed or signed from Las Vegas area (all levels).
Rivals shows 15 guys from 2018 have committed or signed from the state of Colorado (all levels).

That number will only grow as the population grows. High Polynesian and African American influx.

2017 saw Las Vegas produce the following:
Cal - 2
USC - 2
SDSU -1
UCLA -1
Arizona - 4
Air Force -1
Ohio St - 2
UNLV - 3
Nevada -1
Fresno State -1
Nebraska -1
ASU -1
Utah St. -1

Colorado produced:
CU - 4
CSU - 3
Miss St - 1
Michigan - 1
Va Tech - 1
Air Force - 1
Wyoming -2
WSU - 1
Auburn (kicker)

That's 33% more D1 players than Colorado. All within 30 minutes of the airport. No brainer.
