SEATTLE — The University of Colorado track and field program has another young rising star after true freshman Isaiah Givens shattered the school record in the men's mile here Saturday in the final day of the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite.
Givens became the youngest Buff to break the 4-minute mile barrier two weeks ago at the Husky Classic when he ran 3:59.57 seconds for fifth. Two weeks later, he dropped nearly four seconds to take the victory in 3:55.99 seconds, nearly a second faster than Eduardo Herrera ran at this same meet last year for the previous record.
The true freshman settled into fourth and followed the pacers through the quarter around 62 seconds and the halfway mark at just near 2-minutes. With the pacer dropped off at the 800 mark, Givens took the lead and never looked back. He crossed the three-quarters mark at three minutes, then hammered home a 56-second final 400 meters.
Givens mark is 19th in the NCAA this season and the fastest amongst true freshmen (second in total freshman to redshirt freshman Nathan Green of Washington). Now Givens must wait and hope that three others ahead of him decide to focus on another qualified event and earn his way to the NCAA Indoor National Championships through scratches. He's got a great chance with nine guys ahead of him qualified in other events between the 800, 3,000 and 5,000, including Stanford's Ky Robinson and Washington's Brian Fay who are qualified in three events. There are also 10 men in the mile ahead of Givens that are a part of the top-six teams in the distance medley relay and may decide to aim for a national title in that instead of running the mile prelims and the DMR in the same day.
The Buffs added three more marks to the history books in addition to the school record. For the women, Avery McMullen was the highest placer with a third-place finish in the long jump. She bettered her own third-best mark in CU history to 6.07 meters (19-11).
The women's 3,000 did not conclude until Saturday, but Friday Ella Baran finished fourth in the invitational section of the 3,000 in 8:57.67. She now sits 19th in the NCAA in the 3,000 but is ninth in the 5,000.
Finishing his second day of competition, Nick Bianco moved up to fourth in CU history in the heptathlon with a score of 5,307 points. Bianco had a big second day and moved up four positions in the overall standings to fourth after clearing 16-00.75 in the pole vault for a second-place finish in that event.
The meet concluded with both 4x400-meter relays finishing top five with the men placing fifth in 3:09.75 and the women placing fourth in 3:38.92.
Two Buffs should be heading to the NCAA Indoor National Championships March 10th and 11th in Albuquerque. Baran is through in the 5,000 while McMullen dropped to 16th in the pentathlon and will have to wait the weekend to make sure no one passes her. The scratch period should be finalized this coming Wednesday with Givens on the bubble in the mile, Baran on the bubble in the 3,000 and McMullen in the pentathlon.
