2023/24 SOCCER general off-season news thread (International tour to England and Spain begins Friday, 5/10)

On the scrimmage-side of things, the last home contest, hosting CSU, is scheduled for tomorrow night at 7:30 PM. (As is noted a few posts above, the last scrimmage overall this season is scheduled to be CU heading to Lincoln to face the Corn this Saturday (4/20).)

And, in the bigger news, the team announced its full 2024 season schedule, with what looks like a highlight (among MANY OTHER great matches) of North Carolina coming to Boulder, as well of course (re-)joining a new conference, one that, unlike the Pac 12, has a conference tourney.

Colorado will play 12 home dates

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER —
Head coach Danny Sanchez announced the completion of the Buffaloes' 2024 soccer schedule on Monday, in conjunction with the Big 12 Conference schedule release.

Colorado will play nine non-conference matchups before an 11-match Big 12 schedule in its return to the conference. The 2024 schedule features 12 home dates and three opponents from the 2023 NCAA Tournament field.

"We couldn't be more excited to move into the Big 12 this year," Sanchez expressed. "It is a tough league, from top to bottom. We have put together one of the most challenging non-conference schedules in CU history. National powers at home and on the road will really challenge and prepare us for conference play. Our supporters will be treated to some fantastic matches at Prentup Field."

The 2024 season will start with five consecutive matches at Prentup Field. The Buffs will host North Texas in the opener on Aug. 10. Marquette will return to Boulder to open week two (Aug. 15), followed by a marquee matchup with 2023 Elite Eight competitors North Carolina. The opening homestand closes with visits from Wyoming (Aug. 22) and Michigan (Aug. 25).

CU's first road trip will be a two-game swing through North Carolina. The Buffs will take on UNC Greensboro in their first stop on Aug. 29. Colorado will then head to Raleigh to close the trip at NC State (Sept. 1).

The non-conference season closes at home with a weekend matchup featuring front-range-rival Denver (Sept. 5) and Weber State (Sept. 8).

The Buffs will open Big 12 play on the road. CU's will head to Manhattan, Kan., for its first Big 12 Conference match since the end of the 2010 season, taking on Kansas State on Sept. 12. The opening stretch also includes visits to Oklahoma State (Sept. 19) and Iowa State (Sept. 22).

CU's first Big 12 home match will be on Sept. 26, and it will be a meeting against Baylor. The three-game homestand also includes Kansas (Sept. 26) and TCU (Oct. 5).

Colorado will have two more home matches in its final five games. UCF will make its first visit to Boulder on Oct. 13. The Buffs will close the regular season with a familiar foe in Utah (Oct. 25).

The remaining matches will be road contests at Texas Tech (Oct. 10), Cincinnati (Oct. 17) and West Virginia (Oct. 20).

The Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Soccer Championship will be held at CPKC Stadium, home of the NWSL's Kansas City Current (Oct. 30-Nov. 9). The tournament will consist of 11 matches, with the top 12 teams earning a trip to Kansas City. The top four seeds will receive byes into the quarterfinals.

with the new schedule out it seems like the season is starting earlier and earlier. I don't remember a season starting Aug 10 before

I had the same thought. My guess is that the early start to the season has to to do with the Big12 having a post season tourney which the Pac 12 didn't. Thus the games start earlier to accommodate the time needed to get the conference tourney in before the NCAA toruney begins.

Obviously doesn't matter at all, but was curious about the last scrimmage this past Saturday in Lincoln.

From a Google search, found that Nebraska has a full replay available (see below). From going to the end of that, the Buffs lost it 0-1.

Looks like it's almost time for the team's once every four years (NCAA allowed) international trip. Hope they all have a great time and that it helps spur them to a GREAT 2024 season!

Soccer Set to Tour London, Barcelona

The Buffs will travel through the two cities over 10 days

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER —
Colorado soccer will depart on Friday for a 10-day trip, including stops in London and Barcelona. During the trip, the team will play three matches against local teams.

The Buffaloes will depart from Denver on May 10 and travel overnight to London to start the trip. The team will spend the first half of the trip in London before leaving for Barcelona on May 15.

The 2023 roster will be on the trip, along with new transfers this semester, Sami Fisher and Laura Gouvin, and incoming freshman Jace Holley. Last fall's Soccer Ball fundraiser heavily funded the trip.

"I want to thank our donors and supporters for their generosity in making this trip happen," head coach Danny Sanchez expressed. "These trips every four years are important as we continually build our team culture. We are going to two passionate and storied soccer countries, and we can't wait to see all they have to offer."

While in London, the Buffaloes will have the opportunity to explore the city and visit Piccadilly Circus, the London Eye, Tate Modern Museum, St. Paul's Cathedral and Tower Bridge. Stops in Barcelona include Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Las Ramblas and Tossa De Mar.

The Buffaloes will also attend two professional matches - one in each city. The team will head to North London to watch Manchester City play Tottenham and FC Barcelona vs. Rayo Vallecano at Olympic Stadium in Barcelona.

NCAA programs are allowed to take foreign trips once every four years. This tour marks the soccer program's third foreign trip in the last 11 years, the first to Spain in 2015 and then to France in 2019.

The team will author a blog for CUBuffs.com throughout the trip. Fans can also follow along on Instagram and Twitter at @CUBuffsSoccer.
