BOULDER – For the final time this season the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team will take the courts at the CU South Tennis Courts for two more ranked teams in No. 42 Arizona and No. 31 Arizona State. Sunday's match against the Sun Devils we will celebrate our two seniors Alexandra Abyasova and Elys Ventura before the match.
What has become common for the Buffs playing in the Pac-12, is two more ranked teams are in Boulder, making it six of the last seven matches for the Buffs have come against ranked teams.
Despite the struggles of losing five straight matches, individual players are beginning to earn recognition for their hard work and success. The team stayed ranked coming in at No. 75, while Aya El Sayed earned her first career singles ranking at No. 117. This marks the first time a Buff has been ranked since Linda Huang was ranked No. 113 in 2018.
Not only in singles but El Sayed and Pia Rebec were ranked No. 54 as a doubles pairing. Joining them was Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson at No. 70. For Bubalo, Nelson and Rebec they all made their first career ranking alongside El Sayed. As a team this marks the first time with a doubles team ranked since Janssens and Manzi Tenorio were ranked at No. 55 in 2012. Another milestone brings the first time since 2010 that two different pairings were ranked.
"As coaches, we are with our players every day, we know what they're capable of, the belief we have in them is immense," head coach Anthony Pham on the recognition. "We're in kind of a tough stretch of matches against very good teams. We are doing a lot of really good things and putting ourselves in a position where things just haven't fallen our way. The individual rankings hopefully are validation for them as individuals and also for our team that even though we're losing some of these close matches, we're doing a lot of good things and continue to spur the belief that we are right there. We've been knocking on the door and then hopefully this weekend, we can kind of push through it."
The week will start against Arizona on Friday at 1:30 p.m. MT at CU South Tennis Courts. Since joining the Pac-12 the Wildcats have a 6-5 lead over the Buffs, but Colorado has won three straight in Boulder.
Following on Sunday the Buffs will host Arizona State at 11:00 a.m. at CU South Tennis Courts for Senior Day. Abyasova and Ventura will play their final match in front of the fans in Boulder. For Abyasova despite this only being her eighth match in Boulder she won her first six matches of her Colorado career.
She will be graduating next December with her master's in International Affairs.
For Ventura, she arrived in Boulder in the Fall of 2022, after starting her career at Missouri. She played primarily at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles with partner Mila Stanojevic. She has accumulated 59 total wins in her two seasons including 29 doubles wins with Stanojevic which is good for eighth all-time in CU history.
Ventura will graduate in May with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing.
"Our hope and our goal is to send them off on a positive note," Pham commented on Senior Day. "I tell the team almost daily that you have to enjoy and appreciate all these opportunities. Even the little things at practice, having dinner with your teammates, in the van on the road, at the airport, these moments are fleeting. You feel like it goes on forever, but it's such a short time. Alex has only been here for a semester, but she's had a big impact on the team and we wish we had more time with her. For Elys, she has been here for two years and that time has just flown by. Our hope and our goal is to send them out on a positive note because I think that's what they deserve."

BOULDER – After nine final regular season conference matches, the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team will wrap up its time in the Pac-12 with the conference tournament beginning on Wednesday with a rematch against Utah at the Weil Tennis Academy in Ojai, California.
It is not common that you finish the last regular season match with a team, and follow it up with a rematch only four days later, but that is the case against Utah. After narrowly falling short in the comeback attempt the Buffs will look to clean up some things this go around.
"It's a unique situation for our team but I think our team collectively feel like we let one slip on Saturday," head coach Anthony Pham said on the opportunity. "Credit to Utah but I think yeah, we are excited and eager to have that opportunity to play Utah again, especially so quickly. Different locations and different conditions but the team is excited to have another go."
One of the players who look to avenge her loss is Aya El Sayed, who battled at No. 1 singles but was unable to finish it off. After dropping the first set El Sayed took the second and had a 5-3 lead in the third set but could not clinch the match.
She has thrived this season in her new role as the No. 1 singles player as well as a part of the No. 1 doubles pairing. El Sayed leads the team in overall singles wins this season with 19 as well as tied for the most doubles wins with Mila Stanojevic tallying 15 on the season.
For Colorado, they will look to win only its second Pac-12 Tournament match in program history after winning for the first time last season against Oregon in the first round. Much like this season, the Buffs had to avenge a loss from earlier in the season and they came through.
One of the reasons for so much optimism in this team and the future of the program is the growth that has been shown specifically over the last two seasons.
"We have seen tremendous growth from this from this group," Pham said on the team. "We're big believers that you'll learn more when you lose, as opposed to when you win. I think we've learned a lot about this group. We're resilient and we're going to give our best shot on Wednesday."
Starting against Utah at 10 a.m. MT on Wednesday the Buffs will open up the final Pac-12 Tournament. The team will take in all they can on the final trip to Ojai Calif.
"The Pac-12 in the three years I've been here I feel like it's a first-class conference," Pham commented on the final Pac-12 event. "All the coaches I feel like do things the right way and are great academic institutions. It's sad to see it going away. Everyone at the Pac-12 all the staff, Ojai, [Calif.] in general, they run such a first-class event. So, while we're sad for it to be the last event, we're excited to, hopefully, have a good finish."

For the 2nd straight year, the team has been given the opportunity to extend its season and get to play together a bit longer at the 2024 NIT Championship, being held in Bradenton, Florida. Looks like the Buffs are the #1 seed this year of the 8 women's teams participating, and are scheduled to open up their action tomorrow (Monday) morning (9:30 AM MT) in a quarterfinals match with #8 seed Saint Mary’s College of California. Assuming they keep advancing, they'd be playing 3 matches in 3 days, as the semis are scheduled for Tuesday and finals on Saturday.
Note that there is also an 8 team men's tourney occurring at the same time, and all matches are supposed to be viewable on Amazon Prime for those who have a subscription to it.

This marks the first time since 1999 that Colorado made the postseason in consecutive seasons.
All matches for both men and women will be streamed by Amazon Prime and available to regular Prime subscribers at no additional cost. Colorado will join Appalachian State, Liberty, Pacific, Saint Mary's, Tulsa, West Virginia, and Wyoming in Florida. Colorado will take on Saint Mary's in the first round on May 6.
The 2024 UTR Sports NIT Championship is in just the second year after the inaugural event last year in Georgia where the Buffs made their first postseason appearance since going to the NCAA tournament in 2007.
There Colorado won the first postseason match with a 4-1 win over Cal Poly in the first round since 1998.
This is the Buff's second postseason appearance since 2007 and tenth appearance beyond a conference tournament in program history, with two AIAW appearances in 1980 and '81, six NCAA Tournament appearances in 1996, '97, '98, '99, 2003, and '07, as well as last year's trip to the NIT.
Colorado enters the NIT with a 12-10 record after having the season marked by two different streaks. Early in the season, the Buffs went on an eleven-match win streak throughout no conference play and the first conference match of the season against Oregon. But the latter half of the season ended on a nine-match losing streak in Pac-12 conference play.
Despite how the season ended the Buffs season had plenty of moments to remember and milestones made. Four different Buffs ended up in the individual ITA rankings this season, Aya El Sayed in singles, Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson in doubles, and El Sayed and Pia Rebec as well in doubles who are still currently ranked No. 54.
As a team, Colorado was in the ITA rankings seven times the most regular season appearances since 2015.
The Buffs have leaned on El Sayed and Mila Stanojevic heavily this season with the two leading the team in total wins with 34 from El Sayed and 33 from Stanojevic.
Other Buffs that they will look to count on next week are Alexandra Abyasova and Betina Tokac in singles as well as Bubalo and Nelson in doubles. Elys Ventura who is third on the team in wins this season will be a major factor at both No. 2 singles and No. 2 singles.

SAN FRANCISCO – Colorado's Aya El Sayed (second-team) and Mila Stanojevic (honorable mention) earned All-Pac-12 honors as the Buffaloes placed two players on the all-league list for fourth straight season, the Pac-12 announced Friday.
El Sayed is just the third CU player to earn above honorable mention honors, in CU's Pac-12 history, joining Nuria Ormeno Ruiz (2017) and Antonia Balzert (2023), who were also both second team selections. That trio is also the only trio to earn mention on an All-Pac-12 team more than once in CU history.
El Sayed, who was an honorable mention selection in 2022-23, has a 19-11 record this season including 9-7 in dual matches, all at the No. 1 position. She was ranked No. 117 in the April 9 ITA rankings after she defeated No. 31 and defending national champion Tian Fangran from UCLA two days earlier. The Buffs beat Cal Poly in the quarterfinal first round and fell 4-3 to Stetson in the semifinals of that tournament.
The Buffs are one of three teams making the return trip to the tournament, joining App State and Wyoming, who were on the other side of the bracket a year ago. App State is joined by fourth-seeded Liberty on the Buffs side of the bracket with the winner of that match and CU's match with St. Mary's set to face off in the semifinals Tuesday. The championship will take place Wednesday as No. 2 seed West Virginia takes on Pacific and third-seed Tulsa faces Wyoming in first round match-ups.
CU will take place in the post season in back-to-back years for the first time since 1996-99 when the Buffs appeared in four straight NCAA Tournaments.
The Buffs will also be looking to get back on the winning track and end the season on a high note. After winning a school record 11 straight matches and building up an 11-0 record against non-league teams, including a perfect 9-0 record in February, CU had some bad luck at points in conference play and finished the season with a 12-10 overall record.

El Sayed is just the third CU player to earn above honorable mention honors, in CU's Pac-12 history, joining Nuria Ormeno Ruiz (2017) and Antonia Balzert (2023), who were also both second team selections. That trio is also the only trio to earn mention on an All-Pac-12 team more than once in CU history.
El Sayed, who was an honorable mention selection in 2022-23, has a 19-11 record this season including 9-7 in dual matches, all at the No. 1 position. She was ranked No. 117 in the April 9 ITA rankings after she defeated No. 31 and defending national champion Tian Fangran from UCLA two days earlier. Congrats to the team, as they advanced earlier this evening to the NIT Finals! (They'll be playing #3 seed Tulsa, who just won in a tough (3 of their 4 singles wins were in 3 sets) comeback 4-3 over #2 seed West Virginia.)
(Note - Looks like it was a great (albeit nail biting) finish to earn the big double point, as per a team Instagram live post, one of the double teams had to come back from a 3-6 tie breaker deficit and scored the next 5 points to get the Buffs off to a 1-0 lead after the other 2 doubles matches had been split.)

Doubles was intense, and after Stanojevic and Ventura won easily, the other two matches went into a tiebreaker. Down 6-3 in that tiebreaker, Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson rattled off five straight points to take the doubles point and put the Buffs up 1-0.
"Conditions were tough again, playing in the dead of the day starting at three o'clock at 90 degrees and humid again the ladies battled their hearts out," head coach Anthony Pham said. "The doubles win was huge we had two tiebreakers at No. 1 and No. 3, that was big for us. In singles we just got after it, I thought we did a good job today of problem solving and making adjustments. Really proud of the team, we have to get ready to play a good team tomorrow."
