Iqbal Ready For One Last Ride

By: Troy Andre, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

BOULDER
— When Colorado's Sabrina Iqbal walked off the final green at Stage II of the LPGA's Qualifying Series last fall, she faced a decision that might cause most some sleepless nights.

Iqbal had qualified for the Q-Series final stage in December, but to continue on, she would have to turn professional. Fortunately for Iqbal, and Colorado, that decision had actually been made months earlier.

Focused on making the most of a final season of college golf from the beginning, Iqbal put together a memorable collegiate and amateur fall season. Now she, and her Buffaloes teammates, turn their attention to the Spring portion of the 2023-24 season which tees off Monday at the San Diego State Classic.

The 54-hole event will take place at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Twelve teams make up the field, including No. 6 South Carolina, No. 7 Oregon, No. 23 Virginia and No. 30 Georgia. The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MT. Tuesday's final 18-hole round will also begin at 9 a.m.

Iqbal advanced past the first of Q-School in August, tying for 33rd with a 72-hole score of 5-under-par, 283, in Rancho Mirage, Calif. She fared even better at Stage II in Plantation, Fla., in October finishing tied for eighth overall at 7-under, 281, where the top 40 and ties of that event qualified for the final Q-Series.

The San Diego State Classic is the first of five Spring Season Tournaments for the Buffaloes before the final Pac-12 Championship in April. Included in that regular season slate is the annual Chevron Silverado Showdown co-hosted by Colorado, April 8-10, in Napa, Calif.

Colorado has taken advantage of some 60-degree days in the past couple of weeks to play outdoors while still getting some good practice in at the Colorado National facility.

"We have a few players dealing with nagging injuries, but hoping we can keep everyone healthy and ready to play this spring," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "The next month is busy for our team, with three tournaments in the next four weeks. It will be nice to get the team back on the road and in competition mode once again."

Colorado will look for its 1-2 punch of Iqbal and sophomore Morgan Miller to continue the momentum from their record setting fall seasons. Miller and Iqbal put together the best two fall seasons in team history. Miller set school records for fall season stroke average (70.40) and score in relation to par average (-1.40) while Iqbal was right behind with the second-best marks in both categories (70.93, -1.08).

Joining Miller and Iqbal for the San Diego Classic will be senior Hailey Schalk, junior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch and freshman Carolyn Fuller. Junior Lauren Waxer Gooding will also be competing as an individual.

"We are looking forward to kicking off the spring season in San Diego," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "The Farms Golf Club is a challenging test of golf and is usually in great shape. The team has been working hard in practice and workouts since the beginning of the semester and I know they are excited to get going."

In general, most of the Buffs didn't do as well in the final round, but did get a little more support from their 4th scorer to move up one spot and finish 9th at their spring season opener in San Diego.

Note - Per the live leaderboard link I noted in my last post above, the final round of the Inkster tourney was rained out, so the Buffs ended up in 11th place.

After being off from formal team competition for more than 3 weeks (although I'm sure practicing HARD), the team is back in action today against a TOUGH field (including 8 other Pac 12 teams) in a 3 day tourney hosted by ASU and being held in Phoenix.

(Per the pairings tab, the 1st Buff is scheduled to tee off around 10:35 AM MT/ 9:35 AM local (Phoenix) time.)

Overall, the Napa tournament was a ROUGH one, with the Buffs finishing last out of 16 schools and 23 shots behind 15th place USF. They did end up solidly, with their final round more in line with what other other teams put up. (Their final round 295 tied or beat 6 other schools, including tieing co-medalist USC,for the day while also much close (11 shots) behind the low round of the day.)

Now it's on to the last Pac 12's (in Pullman) in ~10 days.

The 3 day Pac 12 Championships have just begun in Pullman:

Buffs Finish 11th At Final Pac-12 Championship

By: Troy Andre, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

PULLMAN, Wash.
— Colorado finished 11th at the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship following a final round of 7-over 295 at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday.

The Buffaloes closed the books on the Pac-12 era with a final 54-hole score of 25-over 889, three strokes behind host Washington State.

Top-ranked Stanford won the team title at 28-under 836, eight strokes ahead of No. 6 USC. The top four teams from the second round stayed unchanged on Tuesday and distanced themselves from the rest of the field. No. 14 Oregon finished third at 16-under 848 while No. 4 UCLA was fourth at 12 under, a full 13 strokes ahead of fifth-place Washington (+1).

Colorado was never able to make a serious move out of the 11th spot. A pair of birdies to open at the par-5 10th by seniors Hailey Schalk and Sabrina Iqbal got the Buffaloes to 2 under, but the four scoring golfers dropped seven strokes over the next four holes and played in that 5-to-10 over range the rest of the round.

"Happy for our seniors who all played solid today," said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly who is wrapping up her 27th and final season as the Buffaloes' head coach. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't get it going as a team this week. The team showed a lot of determination and fought hard. But that's the tough part about golf - you can give it everything you have and sometimes it just doesn't go your way. I'm proud of this team. They never gave up and played hard until the final putt."

About a week ago, it was announced that grad transfer Sabrina Iqbal and sophomore Morgan Miller had received individual berths to an upcoming NCAA regional, with them both competing at Tumble Creek Club in Cle Elum, Wash. All the regionals are being competed May 6-8.

Congrats and best wishes to them!

BOULDER — Graduate Sabrina Iqbal and sophomore Morgan Miller have earned bids as individuals to the 2024 NCAA Women's Golf Regionals as the championship field was announced on Wednesday.

Iqbal and Miller will both compete at the Cle Elum Regional, May 6-8, at the Tumble Creek Club in Cle Elum, Wash. The top 36 student-athletes not on one of the 72 NCAA qualifying teams advanced as individuals; six at each of the six regional sites.

"Really excited and both proud of Morgan and Sabrina for making it to regionals," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "You always want to make it as a team, but it does show that this program is improving and getting two players in is a step in the right direction."

This will be the fourth NCAA appearance for Iqbal, who played in three regionals and an NCAA Championship tournament with TCU between 2019-21. Iqbal ranks second on the team in stroke average (72.66) and score in relation to par (0.55). She has five top 20 tournament finishes this year and held at least a share of Colorado's low 54-hole score in five tournaments.

Iqbal recently qualified for the 2024 U.S. Women's Open and will soon begin her professional career on the EPSON Tour. Iqbal tied for 37th at the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship on Tuesday at 6-over 222.

"I know Sabrina wasn't satisfied with her play at the Pac-12s, so this gives her at least one more opportunity to end her college career on a really high note," Kelly said. "She's an incredible player and it's been really a great opportunity to have her on our team."

Miller makes her first NCAA appearance. She is Colorado's leader in stroke average (72.31) and score in relation to par (0.31), with both numbers being on pace to eclipse school single-season records.

"Morgan has put a ton of work on her game and has really committed to improving," Kelly said. "She works very, very hard and is passionate about the game, so it's really nice to see her get the rewards for that."

Miller has three top 5 finishes and five in the top 20 on the season. Miller, who missed the Pac-12 Championship with an injury, also leads the Buffaloes with 13 sub-par rounds, 17 rounds at par or better and has a school-record seven rounds in the 60s.

"Not being at Pac-12s was kind of a worry because all I could do is sit back and wait and see what happened, but I'm glad it all worked out," Miller said. "I'm proud of all of the hard work I've put in this semester and to see it pay off. I'm just excited for this opportunity and very thankful."

Miller and Iqbal become the fifth and sixth different Buffaloes to reach NCAA Regionals as individuals and first since Malak Bouraeda in 2021. It's the first time that Colorado has had two individuals advance to NCAA Regionals in the same season.

"It's just an honor (to play alongside Sabrina)," Miller said. "I've learned a lot from her this year and it's good to have someone go along with you for the ride and experiencing the same things. I'm excited to play one more tournament with her."

The low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 17-22, at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
