2024 NCAA Championships- OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD (Prelims in Fayetteville AR, 5/22-25; Finals in Eugene, 6/5-8)

Figured I'd start this thread now as the 1st news has been released, the announcement of which Buffs will be competing in what events at next week's Western region preliminaries, being held this year in that well known western town of Fayetteville Arkansas.

Note that congrats are already in order to Buff Avery McMullen, who has qualified for the Finals in Eugene in the Heptathlon. (Due to the grueling nature of the events, the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon don't have competition at the preliminaries. Instead, the top 24 scorers over the season (up through their conference championships) in each multi-event who accept entry into the finals punch their tickets to the Championships finals. Also wanted to note Ms. McMullen is still scheduled to be in Sacramento next week and helping the team by possibly being part of the 4X400M relay team's qualification attempt.)

For the prelims, individual event participants will be trying to be one of the top 12 finishers (out of 48 invited to participate) who get to go to Eugene Oregon for the finals, while it's also the top 12 relay team finishers (out of 24 who qualify for the prelims) that go to Eugene. The relays, field events, and longest races (3000M steeple, 10000M and 5000M races) are all competed in one round at the prelims, while all the shorter races (1500M on down) have 2 rounds both at the prelims and finals.

Go Buffs to the MANY student-athletes declared and accepted to compete at the preliminaries!!!

(Including all runners on the 4X400 relay teams, both of which qualified for Sacramento, I'm guessing roughly 1 dozen CU men and 1 dozen CU women will be competing at prelims.)

As has been the case the last few years, days are generally**** broken down by gender, with Wednesday and Friday being when all men's events are competed, while Thursday and Saturday are women's days.
***The only exceptions to this is the the multi-events, which are required to be competed over 2 consecutive days. Therefore, the men's decathlon is Wednesday and Thursday, while the women's heptathlon is Friday and Saturday.

In general:
Wednesday - Field events (hammer) begin at 3:00 PM MT AND the decathlon, day 1 begins at 1:30 PM MT, while racing on the track begins at 5:32 PM MT.

32 Student-Athletes Set to Compete at NCAA West Prelims​

BOULDER— Colorado's track and field program will send 32 student-athletes to Fayetteville, Ark., for the 2024 NCAA West Regional Track and Field Preliminary Round, May 22-25. The event, hosted by the University of Arkansas at John McDonnell Field, will feature 32 Buffaloes competing in 12 different events, including the men's and women's 4x400 relay.

With 48 entries in each event, the NCAA West First Round competition will determine the 12 individuals and relays who will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, from June 5-8.

Highlighting the group are seniors Abbey Glynn, who ranks fifth in the West in the 400-meter hurdles with a CU record time of 55.42, and Bailey Hertenstein, who ranks third in the West in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:18.80.

The men will compete in seven events. Austin Vancil and Matt Ward are notable contenders for the Buffs.

Due to weather, events will start an hour earlier, with the hammer throw kicking off at 9 a.m. (CT).

After 2 days, it's the hurdle group that has advancers, as 2 men and 2 women have advanced to respectively, tomorrow and Saturday's next round (quarterfinals) in the 400M hurdles. (Wanted to mention, although she didn't quite qualify for Eugene (which required a top 12 finish), nice effort in the last race tonight, the women's 10000M, by frosh Abbey Nechanicky. She either wasn't feeling it or started a little too conservatively early, as she was back in the mid to late 20's in place around the halfway mark of the race, but ran great the rest of the way to move all the way up to 15th at the finish in a new personal record.)

Colorado Men Wrap Up First Round of Regionals​

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Colorado men's track and field teams took part in four events on day one of the NCAA West Regionals here at John McDonnell Field on Wednesday. The Buffaloes had a total of 12 athletes compete, 11 of whom competed on the track.

The meet was supposed to start with the men's hammer throw in the morning, however, stormy weather postponed the event to the last event of the day. The change resulted in waiting until 5:30 p.m. MT for the first Buffs to see action.

Those Buffs were Isaiah Givens, Noah Hibbard and Lukas Haug in the first round of the men's 1,500-meters. Givens led the charge for CU, finishing 23rd with a time of 3:42.52. Behind him was Hibbard in 33rd and Haug in 41st.

The next race for Colorado was its most successful one of the day. Garrett Nelson, Colton Romig and Daniel Tragarz all ran in the 400-meter hurdles. Nelson placed 12th with a personal best time of 50.77. He and Romig, who finished 22nd, both qualified for the quarterfinals in the event. They will race again at 6:25 p.m. on Friday with a chance at qualifying for nationals.

Colorado's last action on the track included five Buffs in the 10,000-meters. Although no Buffs qualified in the event, CU saw two top-25 finishes with Brendan Fraser in 22nd and Austin Vancil in 23rd.

The final event of the day that was supposed to be the first was the hammer throw. Matt Ward was the only competitor for the Buffs and he fouled on all three attempts.

Two More Buffs Extend Their Seasons in Fayetteville​

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Colorado women's track and field teams were represented by seven athletes during the NCAA West Regionals here at the University of Arkansas on Thursday.

Amanda Opp started the day off for the Buffaloes, competing in the women's hammer throw. Out of 48 competitors, she managed a 27th-place finish with her best mark coming in at 56.82 meters on her second toss. The final qualifier threw for an impressive distance of 60.39m as she and 11 others booked their trips to Eugene, Ore.

Next for Colorado was Jada Green in the javelin throw coming off a second-place performance in the event at the Pac-12 Championships in Boulder. Similarly to Opp, her best mark came on her second attempt. Green ended up placing 24th with a distance of 48.35m.

Things started to look up for the Buffs when Abbey Glynn and Emma Pollak hit the track. They both competed in the women's 400-meter hurdles and both advanced to the next round with their performances. Glynn finished sixth in 56.79 while Pollak finished 23rd in a personal best 58.61. The two women will race in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. MT.

Samree Dishon, Abbey Nechanicky and Katie Doucette closed out day two racing in the 10,000-meters. Nechanicky led the three Buffs with a 15th-place finish and a new personal record in the event. She finished in 34:48.09 and was the only runner out of all 48 athletes to set a personal record in the race.

As a result of the weather forecast for Friday, field events will begin at 9 a.m. while the running events will start at 1 p.m. The Buffs have 10 athletes set to toe the line on the third day of competition.

Mathison Leads Charge for Colorado on Day Three​

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Colorado men's track team saw 10 athletes compete at the NCAA West Regionals here at John McDonnell Field to close out the men's portion of the preliminaries on Friday.

Kole Mathison and Charlie Welch were the first Buffaloes to see action, competing in the 3000-meter steeplechase. There were 12 qualifiers who punched their tickets to Eugene, Ore. and Mathison was one of them after finishing ninth.

Mathison ran a personal best 8:47.05 to keep his impressive freshman season alive as he is the first Buff since 2016 to qualify for nationals in the steeplechase.

"He had to be one of the most inexperienced people in the steeplechase in the field today," head coach Mark Wetmore stated. "He came in ranked 30th or 35th and ended up in ninth and advanced to the nationals in Eugene so it was a very pleasant surprise. But we know he's talented and we know he's mature and serious so not a total surprise."

After advancing past the first round of the 400-meter hurdles on Wednesday, Garrett Nelson and Colton Romig competed in the quarterfinals this afternoon. Neither of them managed to qualify for nationals, however, Nelson picked up his second personal best of the meet. He set a PR in the 400m hurdles on Wednesday and then broke it today with a time of 50.65.

Day three ended with the men's 4x400-meter relay. The four Buffs who raced were Luke Dry, Ian Gilmore, Daniel Tragarz and Nick Gehring.

Allie Routledge and Riley Ward will be the only field athletes to represent Colorado for Saturday's final day of the NCAA West Regionals. They are set to compete in the high jump at 1 p.m. MT.

Abbey Glynn and Emma Pollak will then race in the 400m hurdles later in the evening. Other Buffs on the track on Saturday night will be Bailey Hertenstein, Samree Dishon and Ella Baran in the 5,000-meter and the 4x400m relay team of Joy Moorer, Emma Pollak, Avery McMullen and Abbey Glynn.

I'd say it was a successful day for the Buff women, as all those who I'd have thought to have reasonable to good chances of advancing DID advance - namely Glynn in the 400M hurdles, Hertenstein and Baran in the 5000M, and the 4X400M relay team (believe consisting of Moorer, Pollak, McMullen and Glynn?).

Buffs Impress on Final Day of NCAA West Regionals​

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Colorado women's track and field teams closed out the fourth and final day of the NCAA West Regionals here at the University of Arkansas on Saturday. The Buffaloes had 10 athletes compete across four events and saw their most successful day of action take place.

In one of the first events of the day, Allie Routledge and Riley Ward represented Colorado in the high jump. Routledge was able to clear 1.71m while Ward's best mark came in at 1.66m.

Later on, Abbey Glynn and Emma Pollak raced in the 400-meter hurdles after advancing to the quarterfinals on Thursday. Glynn put together a great performance, finishing sixth in 56.25. She punched her ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the fourth consecutive year.

The booked trips to Eugene, Oregon didn't stop there for the Buffs. Bailey Hertenstein and Ella Baran both qualified for nationals in the 5,000-meter with top-five finishes. Hertenstein placed second with a time of 15:54.17 while Baran came in fifth-place after finishing in 15:57.97.

In the final event of the day, the 4x400-meter relay, Colorado ran the eighth fastest time out of 24 total teams. The group of Joy Moorer, Avery McMullen, Pollak and Glynn finished in 3:32.19 for a third-place finish in their heat. The Buffs have now made it to nationals in the 4x400m for three straight years while also making an appearance in 2019.

"Avery [McMullen] was already in Eugene before we came here because the heptathlon qualifies with different rules," head coach Mark Wetmore said after the meet. "So Avery came down here to help the relay and she certainly did. That was a great last half hour to win and get through in the 5000. Relay then gets a big Q, an automatic qualifier, in the heat for the 4x400. And of course Abby [Glynn] was normal, a nice time, a comfortable qualifier in the 400m hurdles."

"So it was a good day. We're pleased we got just about everybody through that we had reasonable hopes to."

Colorado will have seven athletes make the trip to Oregon for the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The meet is scheduled for June 6-9 at Hayward Field.
