As with the other more "individual" sports, thought I'd set up this thread to report on notable results for the indoor track and field men's and women's teams throughout their 2025/26 regular season. (I'm starting this now since I see a few Buff distance runners are scheduled to be competing at a major meet later this week.)

The thread will also be used for any other general news that pops up during the season regarding the teams and any of their individuals, which could also be related to their related sports of outdoor track and field and cross country.

I plan to set up a separate thread for the post-season meets. They are:
  • The Big 12 Championships, which are scheduled to be held 2/27-28 in Lubbock, and
  • The NCAA Championships are March 13-14, 2026 at the University of Arkansas's Randal Tyson Center in Fayetteville.

A few quick notes:
  • Must say as a pretty big general track fan it's going to be a little weird this season that, after the Malones' left (were let go?) this summer, as far as I know there will not be any Buffs competing in the multi-events, jumps or throws any more (so maybe no one competing in the FIELD portions of track and field).
  • I believe Asst. Coach Brockman IS still with the Buffs, so I assume they are still planning to have student-athletes competing in the sprints and hurdles.
  • In addition to, as I mentioned below, the team not having released its schedule yet, it also doesn't have a 2025/26 roster up at cubuffs.com yet, so I'm not sure what the composition of the team (student-athletes or coaches) is this season.

Indoor schedule as of 12/4/25:
(As I always like to note, my experience is that track and field schedules, at least under the old coaching staff, had / has the most fluid schedule of any CU sport, with meets that CU competes at being added and subtracted from the schedule, often with only a week or two notice (at least to the public).)

Edit - Mainly copying from prior years' threads, an explanation of how qualifying for the NCAA Championships works for the indoor track and field season:

Unlike outdoors, there are no regional championships competed to choose who advances to the NCAA Indoor Championships. It's merely-
  • In individual events, it's just the athletes who earn the top 16 times or marks during the qualifying period who accept the invitation to go to the championships for that event.
  • For relays, it's the teams with the top 12 times who accept a bid. (A school can only select 1 relay team per gender to represent them.)
  • Note that there are adjustments made for (1) altitude and (2) facility rating. (An Altitude conversion app and facility conversion factor document can be found in the next link below.)
  • Full explanation of qualifying is at http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1ITF .
To keep up with how individual Buffs are placed to qualify, I believe the official resources for times and marks used to establish the potential qualifiers are-
(For awhile, the last full season's (2024/25) results are probably more indicative of potential qualifying marks. Links to last season's results are:

As I noted in my original post, I'm mainly starting this thread now because I found out (through links provided in a letsrun.com forum thread) that a few distance Buffs are starting off their season later this week (Saturday) at a major meet for (especially for the 3000M and 5000M distances) hosted by Boston University (BU).
(From what I've read previously, even though typically runners used to start resting right after cross country and then heavy training trying to peak near the end of the indoor season, that changed at some point. Now I believe, mainly just for this meet, many top runners compete HARD at this BU meet before they start their rest, recovery and heavy training phases. I believe they do this (1) because they are still hopefully near or at their peak fitness and speed from the recent cross country championships and (2) the BU track is one of it not the fastest indoor tracks in the country (if not world?).
This seemed to prove out last season, where at minimum 1/4 of the eventual top 16 in each of the men's and women's 3000M and 5000M distances set their top times at this meet.)

Also, wanted to note that, as some one in letsrun did point out, the headers for these lists still reference last year;s meet dates, but per them these ARE the entries for THIS year.)

The team has now released its schedule, and I have edited it into the original post. (They actually posted both the indoor AND outdoor schedules, but since this thread is only about indoors, I didn't bother posting the outdoor portion of the schedule in the OP.)
_____________________________________________________________________________________

And, as part of that released schedule, the news comes out that, in addition to Saturday's BU meet I already posted about in my last post, other Buffs are opening their seasons tomorrow and Saturday in Golden at the "Mines Alumni Classic".

The live results link I have below already is listing entrants for the various events. Per that, looks like there are a few CU sprinters and hurdlers competing, as well as a few field athletes***.

(***I had mentioned in my original post that after letting their veteran multi-events, jumps and throws coaches go this past summer, I didn't know if they'd be fielding any field athletes this season. However, in the roster now posted (at https://cubuffs.com/sports/track-and-field/roster?sort=position ), looks like a few veteran Buffs have decided to continue to compete in the black and gold. Notes on that:
  • On the women's side, there are still 2 multi-eventers, 1 jumper and 2 throwers on the roster. For the men, it's 2 throwers.
  • All 7 of the returners are junior, seniors or grad students, so would GUESS they're getting to finish their careers at CU, but the program may (???) not be adding any other student-athletes in these events going forward.
  • On the coaching-side, looks like a couple recent Buff greats are listed as the coaches in the individual areas (except the multi-events) as Volunteer Assistants, with Jada Green listed as one of the throws coaches, and Abbey Glynn, in addition to helping assist Coach Brockman in coaching the sprints and hurdles she competed at in college, is also listed as the jumps coach. (There is also a Gary Lash listed as another Volunteer Assistant for the throws; his name doesn't ring a bell as someone who competed with the Buffs.)
)

Again, for the Mines meet:

Final Schedule - https://minesathletics.com/documents/2025/12/3/Mines_Alumni_Classic_25_FINAL_Schedule.pdf
(As it typical for many of these meets, looks like the 1st day (Friday in this case) has just a few field events scheduled (shot put, long jump and pole vault (all 3 for both genders scheduled)), with all the track and other field events taking place Saturday.)

One thing I forgot to note about the schedule. I assume mainly due to having the NICE IPF available, looks like the team is scheduled to be hosting FOUR indoor track meets this season, which will I believe be a record. (Even with the team's track only emphasis now, I assume the meets will include field events, but am not sure.?.)

Great opportunity for local track fans to see the Buffs live in action!

Sounds like it was a great start to the season, with many personal bests, CU top 10 all-time bests and, in 1 case, a new CU best all-time - https://cubuffs.com/news/2025/12/6/...reakthrough-performances-in-boston-and-golden

Buffs Open Indoor Season With Breakthrough Performances in Boston and Golden

Overburg breaks school record; Three lands on CU all-time marks

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

BOULDER
- The University of Colorado track and field program opened the 2025-26 indoor season with a powerful statement across two meets, the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston and the Mines Alumni Classic in Golden. The weekend was highlighted by a school-record performance from James Overberg, three CU all-time marks, and several strong debuts from both veteran and first-year Buffs.

Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener - Boston
Colorado's distance group delivered one of its strongest collective opening weekends in recent years as the Buffs lined up in stacked, nationally competitive fields filled with NCAA champions, All-Americans, and sponsored professionals.

Men's 3000 Meters

Dominic Serem continued the momentum from his breakout cross country season, running 7:45.61, which ranks sixth on CU's all-time performance list. Serem stayed controlled through an aggressive early pace and closed well to establish an early national-level mark.

Isaiah Givens also impressed, running 7:53.07, a strong season opener that positions him firmly on the national radar. Givens navigated the quick early tempo and surged late, giving Colorado a strong 1-2 presence in the event.

Men's 5000 Meters - School Record
The highlight of the Boston trip came from James Overberg, who ran 13:31.63 to break the Colorado school record previously held by CU great Joe Klecker (13:34.10, Feb. 2020). Overberg raced with seasoned precision, staying patient through the early laps before closing decisively to secure the historic mark and establish one of the nation's top early-season times.

Women's 3000 Meters Invitational
Jessie Secor opened her season with a quality 9:06.77 in the Invitational 3000 meters. Facing a field loaded with top NCAA talent, Secor remained steady through the changing pace and delivered a strong final kilometer for a promising early-season performance.

Women's 5000 Meters
Freshman Abbey Nechanicky made her season debut with a breakthrough 15:57.80, besting her previous mark of 16:00.01 and becoming the newest addition to Colorado's all-time list. The performance places her tenth in CU history. Nechanicky handled the crowded, fast-moving field with composure, surging over the final laps to break the 16-minute barrier for the first time.

Mines Alumni Classic - Golden
While CU's distance squad raced on the East Coast, the Buffs' sprints, hurdles, throws, and jumps crews opened their seasons with strong early performances in Golden.

Men's 60-Meter Hurdles
In his first race as a Buff, Antonio Votour delivered one of the top highlights of the weekend, running 8.01 in the final after an 8.02 prelim. His debut places him on CU's all-time list and marks one of the fastest season openers by a Buff hurdler in recent years.
Teegan Malcom, competing in his first collegiate meet, followed with an 8.38 in the final after running 8.42 in prelims.

Men's Weight Throw
Lucas Williams opened his season with power and consistency, unleashing 18.73 meters (61'5½") on his final attempt. The performance moves him to sixth on CU's all-time list and highlights his upward trajectory entering his junior campaign.

Women's Weight Throw
Amanda Opp posted a strong start to her season with a final-round throw of 16.48 meters (54'1"), closing her series with her best attempt of the day.

Women's High Jump
Sophomore Riley Ward cleared 1.75 meters (5'8¾"), just off her collegiate best of 1.76 meters, in a composed season debut that included multiple clutch third-attempt clearances.

With the 1st home meet less than 3 days from beginning, wanted to bump this thread.

Meet info document - https://cubuffs.com/documents/2025/12/16/Potts_Invitational_2026_-_Team_Guide.pdf
(The document includes a (I assume tentative) schedule. In general:
  • Friday is dedicated to all the field events, with the 1st (women's lonb jump and pole vault) events scheduled to begin at noon.
  • Then, Saturday's track action begins at 11:00 AM.
  • Of course, all the action is taking place at the (Ford) practice facility.)

It's Field Day at the Practice Facility, with the action starting in around an hour and a half.

I hope more capital is put to use on the the track team. Dropping the throws and decathlon coaches was a joke.

CU should never lose the in-state talent to other programs. I get that North Carolina, NAU, Stanford, Oregon have great programs and it is tough to keep kids home as they want to experience something new but CU has a great XC history and it should be celebrated and invested in.

I forgot to post this earlier (looks like over 1/2 of the field events scheduled for today are already completed); here is the preview for this week's home meet - https://cubuffs.com/news/2026/1/21/...for-colorado-invite-at-ford-practice-facility

The marquee Mile Invitational delivered one of the top performances in the nation as Givens broke both the facility record and the Colorado soil record. His converted time of 3:51.73 leads the NCAA and currently stands as the top mark in the country for the 2026 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Kole Mathison ranks fourth nationally with a converted time of 3:54.87 after running a personal best 4:00.74. Lukas Haug moved into the top 10 with a converted time of 3:56.13 following a personal best 4:02.03, while Grady Rauby ran a personal best 4:03.14, converting to 3:57.21, which ranks 14th nationally.

Buffs Throwers Highlight Day One of the Colorado Invitational

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER —
Colorado's throwers hit the field at the Ford Practice Facility (FPF) on Friday, kicking off the first day of the Colorado Invitational.

Three Buffaloes competed in the meet's first day. Amanda Opp (weight throw) and Alaina Fantaski (shot put) represented the women, while Lucas Williams (weight throw) was CU's lone male competitor.

Opp posted a season-best mark in the weight throw for the second consecutive week. She bested her 16.69-meter toss from last week's Potts Invitational with 17.56 meters on Friday. Her distance currently ranks 11th in the Big 12 and 12th in the Mountain Region. Fantaski also set a new personal-best mark of 8.13 meters on her final throw of the day.

Williams threw his third throw of over 18.0 meters in the men's weight throw. He topped out with a distance of 18.04 meters on his last throw in the finals heat.

Justine Kipkoech was excellent in first race as a Buffalo

Newcomer Justine Kipkoech Marvelous in the Mile at Colorado Invitational

Hurdler Antonio Votour also stars for Buffaloes in second home meet of the season

By: Steve Hurlbert, Director of Strategic Communications

BOULDER —
In his very first race as a Colorado Buffalo, transfer sophomore Justine Kipkoech made quite an impression, recording a top three program finish in the mile to lead Buffs runners in the second and final day of the Colorado Invitational held at the Ford Practice Facility (FPF).

Kipkoech ran a time of 4:00.79, 3:54.92 adjusted for altitude, the third fastest indoor time in the event in program history, while finishing third overall in the race. Kipkoech's altitude-adjusted time is currently the sixth-fastest in the NCAA so far this year and capped a whirlwind two weeks that saw him get settled in Boulder just in time to compete this weekend.

"The last two weeks have been a bit chaotic for him, getting settled in classes and to be able to open with a 3:54 given the chaos that's happened with him over the last couple of weeks is really, really impressive," said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Sean Carlson. "Over the next two years he's going to be one of the best milers in the country for sure."

Kipkoech's performance comes just one week after his teammate Isaiah Givens set a facility and Colorado soil record at the same distance, creating quite a one-two Buffalo punch in the mile.

"Obviously, our distance side is very cross country focused," said Carlson. "But it just so happens we have some really, really good milers that can run cross country too, which is nice. With Justine and Isaiah shaping up to be two of the better milers in the country right now it sets us up for a really, really good Distance Medley Relay in a couple of weeks. I think we can run one of the top times in the country."

Junior Antonio Votour also added his name to the Colorado record books, recording the sixth fastest time in program history in the 60 meter hurdles with a personal-best mark of 8.00 in the preliminaries. He followed that performance up with a time of 8.07 in the finals to finish fourth.

In the 400 meters, a pair of Buffaloes achieved personal records with sophomore Jameson Leigh recording a time of 49.44 for the men, good enough for sixth overall, and sophomore Abby Miller running a time 58.21 for the women, good enough for fourth.

Meanwhile, sophomore Jessie Secor reached the podium in the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:11.86 (2:11.01 Converted), good enough for third place, and junior Danny Tragarz finished second in the men's 200 meters with a time of 21.50.

The team is back in action, with 6 Buff women entered to race today (Friday) and 11 men on Saturday. With, I believe, the BU track considered one of the fastest indoor in the country (if not the world), I'm sure the team will be working HARD to earn some top times.

Also wanted to note the entry list contained one more Buff not included in the preview article, Jake Liebert in the men's 5000M. I'd assume the odds are he probably just scratched, but wanted to mention him in case it was just an accidental omission.)

Bumping the thread as tomorrow is the start of the last FULL*** home indoor meet of the year. Like the earlier home meets, looks like all the field events are tomorrow, and then the track racing takes over Saturday.
(***There is also a "last chance" meet on the schedule for Friday, Feb. 20th, but that doesn't include any field events, and also doesn't include the 2 longest track distances.)

Note - I believe in past years this was often where Buffs made their best pitch to earn NCAA qualifying times, at least among the home meets. However, per the below preview, looks to me like many of the "big" names are either skipping this meet or, especially on the men's side, maybe using the mile race as (I'd GUESS) a hard workout to get them ready for next weekend where I'll assume they'll be pointing towards season's best at the speedway (and I assume great competition) that is the BU indoor track.

Pearson, Men’s DMR Rewrite Record Book on Senior Day

By: Lauren Cawley, Communications Associate

BOULDER –
Senior Day and school records made for a memorable afternoon Friday as the Buffs closed out the regular season at the Colorado Last Chance inside the CU Ford Practice Facility. The program honored its 18 graduating seniors before two all-time marks fell on the track.

Avery Pearson delivered a historic performance in the women's 800 meters, clocking an altitude-adjusted 1:59.98 (2:00.76 raw) to shatter the previous school record of 2:02.54 set by Sage Hurta in 2021. On the men's side, the distance medley relay quartet of Justine Kipkoech, Danny Tragarz, Drew Costelow and Isaiah Givens ran 9:19.00 (9:28.63 raw) to smash the program record of 9:38.14 set last season.

"It was a fantastic last chance meet for our kids," said Sean Carlson, Director of Cross Country and Track & Field. "The men's DMR ran really, really well — the first three legs were flying. The mile always gets a little tactical, but we still ran well and that should be an NCAA qualifying mark. And then Avery in the 800 — just lights out. Two-flat at altitude is really, really impressive. That sets her up well heading into the Big 12s and nationals."

HOW IT HAPPENED

The men's DMR opened the day in thrilling fashion, placing third in a loaded race featuring BYU and NAU. All three teams are expected to qualify for the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships with Friday's marks.

Newcomer Kipkoech set the tone on the 1200-meter leg, handing off first to Tragarz, who maintained the lead over 400 meters. Costelow battled hard on the 800-meter leg, narrowly surrendering the top spot to NAU before passing the baton evenly to Givens for the anchor 1600 meters. Givens fought down the homestretch against NAU's Colin Sahlman and BYU's Carter Cutting to secure third. Colorado's converted mark currently sits at approximately NCAA No. 4 this season, though national standings may shift as more DMRs are contested this weekend.

Pearson's breakthrough further vaulted her into the national spotlight. Just weeks after clocking 2:03.21 at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational, she returned with a stunning improvement. Her converted 1:59.98 ranks NCAA No. 7 this season and No. 3 all-time at altitude, while her performance moves her to No. 16 on the NCAA all-time, all-conditions list. With Friday's mark, Pearson firmly positions herself among the top contenders entering championship season.

The Buffs saw additional victories on the track. Ernest Campbell captured the men's 60-meter dash in 6.80, while Kole Mathinson won the men's mile in ease with a time of 4:07.85. On the women's side, freshman Linda Weigang finished runner-up in the mile, clocking a PR of 5:05.92.

With momentum on both the men's and women's sides, the Buffs now turn their attention to the postseason, carrying record-breaking performances and national-caliber marks into championship season.

UP NEXT: The Buffs travel to Lubbock, Texas, to compete at the Big 12 Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28, hosted by Texas Tech.

Today's track action began about an hour ago.

Yesterday was a solid start to the team. Although still in re-building mode, the team earned 3 podiums and a meet record in the women's 600M prelims yesterday, so both the men and women are, I'm sure, looking to improve on last year's results, where both ended up last in the team standings (the men with 18 points and women 8.5).

Buffs Open Big 12 Championships with Three Podium Finishes, Meet Record

By: by Lauren Cawley, Communications Associate

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Colorado Buffs wrapped up a successful day one at the Big 12 Indoor Championships with three podium finishes and a meet record inside the Sports Performance Center.

Results:cubuffs.com/tracklive

"I thought it was a great day from the men's and women's DMRs — hard-fought races," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Sean Carlson said. "Avery setting the meet record in the prelim was impressive, and I'm excited to see what she does in the final tomorrow. Lucas had a very good day in the weight throw. The squad of men's milers making the final along with Drew in the 1K got the first part of the job done."

HOW IT HAPPENED

Avery Pearson stole the show early, winning the women's 600-yard preliminary in a meet-record time of 1:17.92. Pearson led from the gun and never looked back, cruising to the historic mark to automatically qualify for Saturday's final at 2:10 p.m. MT.

In the women's distance medley relay, Riley Burkey led off on the 1200m leg and handed to Abby Miller in ninth place. Miller completed the 400m leg before passing to Pearson in 11th. Pearson surged on the 800m leg, moving the Buffs up three spots to eighth before handing off to Jessie Secor. Secor delivered a strong 1600m anchor, methodically working through the field to bring Colorado all the way up to third place as the quartet finished in 11:22.85.

Abbey Nechanicky secured Colorado's first podium finish of the day in the women's 5000 meters, placing seventh in 16:18.86. She stayed consistent throughout the race, moving between fifth and seventh place over the closing laps to maintain scoring position and earn a top-eight finish for the Buffs.

The men's DMR of Isaiah Givens, Danny Tragarz, Drew Costelow and Justine Kipkoech placed runner-up in 9:38.03. Givens opened on the 1200m leg, handing off in eighth place. Tragarz moved the Buffs up to seventh on the 400 before Costelow carried the baton on the 800, positioning Colorado in sixth for Kipkoech. On the 1600m anchor leg, Kipkoech closed hard and maintained control of second for much of the race before battling with BYU over the final 200 meters to secure the runner-up finish — Colorado's third podium of the day.

ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

In the men's mile preliminaries, TJ Hansen, Kole Mathison and Isaiah Givens each advanced to Saturday's final, while Drew Costelow moved on in the men's 1000 meters.

Lucas Williams narrowly missed the podium in the men's weight throw, placing ninth overall with a personal-best mark of 19.51 meters.

In the men's 5000 meters, James Overberg and Jake Liebert finished ninth and 10th, respectively.

Competition resumes Saturday at 1:50 p.m. MT with the men's mile final, as the Buffaloes look to build on a strong opening day in Lubbock.

Both the men's and women's teams built on their point totals from last season, so although I'm sure they always hope for more, based on where they're at in the re-building process it was solid results at the Big 12's for the Buffs, highlighted by a dominating win in the women's 600 yard run by Ms. Pearson, who broke her own meet record (from the prior day) by ~.5 seconds in the final.

Pearson Wins 600 Title as Buffs Land Six Podium Finishes on Day Two

By: Lauren Cawley, Communications Associate

LUBBOCK, Texas –
The Colorado Buffaloes capped off a strong showing at the Big 12 Indoor Championships with six podium finishes on day two, highlighted by Avery Pearson's 600-yard title inside the Sports Performance Center.

Results: cubuffs.com/tracklive

"Avery winning the 600 and setting the meet record again was a fun race and will set her up with great momentum going into NCAAs," said Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Sean Carlson. "Our milers all came back and scored in a tactical final, with Givens bouncing back and getting some confidence for NCAAs. Drew ran a great 1k after the DMR last night. Tanner had the best race of his career in the 3k and I am excited about the runner he is continuing to develop into."

HOW IT HAPPENED

The men's mile final opened the day for the Buffs, with Isaiah Givens leading the way in third place (4:05.90). Givens positioned himself near the back early before surging over the final 200 meters to secure a podium finish. Kole Mathison set the early pace and battled throughout to place seventh in 4:07.69, while TJ Hansen remained in contention in the middle of the pack before finishing eighth in 4:07.87. All three earned podium finishes in the tactical championship race.

Moments later, Avery Pearson returned to the track and delivered another historic performance in the women's 600 yards. Pearson led from the gun and broke her own meet record set in Friday's prelim, clocking 1:17.48 to win the conference title. Her mark keeps her at No. 3 on the NCAA all-time list.

Drew Costelow added another podium finish for Colorado in the men's 1000 meters, placing fifth after doubling back from the DMR the night before.

To close out the day, Tanner Newkirk turned in a breakthrough performance in the men's 3000 meters. Competing in a loaded field, Newkirk moved up steadily throughout the race, climbing from 10th to sixth to secure a podium finish.

Buffs Qualify First Men’s DMR Since 1994 for NCAAs

By: Lauren Cawley, Communications Associate

BOULDER –
For the first time since 1994, the Colorado Buffaloes have qualified a men's distance medley relay team for the 2026 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The last time Colorado sent a distance medley relay team to the national championships came in 2017 when the women's quartet of Tabor Scholl, Elissa Mann, Sage Hurta and Dani Jones captured the NCAA title in College Station, Texas. Read the full recap from the 2017 championship here.

That race also marked the first time a Colorado DMR advanced to the NCAA Indoor Championships during head coach Mark Wetmore's tenure, which began in 1996.

Now under the direction of head coach Sean Carlson, the program has qualified its first men's distance medley relay in 32 years to the NCAA Indoor Championships.

The quartet of Justine Kipkoech, Danny Tragarz, Drew Costelow and Isaiah Givens secured its place with a record-breaking performance at the Colorado Last Chance meet, running 9:19@ to shatter the previous school record.

Additionally, Colorado will send five athletes to the national championships—its most since 2022 when the program qualified six. Avery Pearson will compete in the 800 meters, while Isaiah Givens and Justine Kipkoech qualified in the mile in addition to their roles on the Buffaloes' distance medley relay.

The DMR will take place in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Friday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. MT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
