College Football News, Rumor & Humor

It's time to make a move if he's going to leave. The way things are at places like Duke (how Cutcliffe & MacIntyre functioned), is that you build toward a year with a veteran team that has great chemistry and a bit of NFL talent. Then there are some lean years that follow. Also, even the good teams wear down as the season progresses, the lack of depth is exposed, and those conference opponents who have been out recruiting you see their young talent come on the 2nd half of the season.

This was his vet Duke team.

And on this note, I don't know that this is even a viable P5 program model any more with NIL. Problem with it is that when your guys show they can play as freshmen, sophomores or juniors they now get recruited into the portal if you can't pay them market value.
His value is all-time. He would be a good coach for aTm too. They’ve tried to hire splashy names. Need someone to get some wins.

Vera-Ellen was naturally tiny (estimated to weigh around 95-105 lbs around the time of filming), but there were/are rampant rumors of her having an eating disorder. Her friends/family dispute this, although her waist was reportedly measured to be 17 inches (!). Relatedly, there were also rumors were that her neck was so emaciated from her disorder that in White Christmas they designed all of her costumes to cover her neck. That seems to be pretty conclusively disproved by pictures of her afterwards, but it is odd.
Vera-Ellen was a highly accomplished dancer having started in ballet and performing in many Broadway productions before going to Hollywood.

She was reported to be a favorite dancing partner of Fred Astaire who was originally cast in the movie in the Danny Kaye role but had to drop out.

Vera was a spectacular dancer and very good actor but couldn't sing so all her songs are dubbed with another voice.

After White Christmas she only did a couple more movies before retiring.

I'm one of those odd people who would rather watch an old movie than the new ones.

Damn! While your white Christmas post was “one of the best” lines ever, you officially posted THE best line ever!!

Bit of a side rant here, but it annoys the fvck out of me that there is so much criticism of Ferentz and his Iowa teams because they don't score much.

They're winning, so why give a fvck how they win? They're 9-2. So what if they win 13-6. That's not deserving of less respect than a team that wins 42-30.

Justification is that the whole conference is hot garbage and they have 9 wins over NOBODY.

Utah State (by 10) (G5)
Iowa State (by 7) (their best win)
Western Michigan. (G5)
Penn State (blown out). (6-2 in conference)
MSU (by 10). (2-6 in conference)
Purdue (by 6) (2-6 in conference)
Wisconsin (by 9) (4-4 in conference)
close loss to a bad Minnesota team (3-5 in this crappy conference and winless since)
A solid win over Rutgers (who's 3-5 in conference)
Illinois (by 2) (3-5 in conference)

This is a team that is not .500 in the PAC12 this year. This is by far the biggest dog-**** conference in the country.
With the conference being so bad, 9-2 is the minimum expectation for a ho-hum team.

So what? They're 9-2 and it doesn't matter whether they got there playing an incredibly conservative offense instead of a dynamic offense. All you're saying is that the record doesn't impress you much because the B1G SOS isn't all that.

I think the difference is that what you are calling "conservative offense" is actually "incompetent offense".

Last in the B1G in yards/game, 2nd to last in points/game, last in passing, bottom third in rushing. The 2022 season was worse. That's not conservative, it's horrible offensive coaching. The incompetence, coupled with nepotism is what draws the criticism.

The Barry Alvarez and Paul Chryst Wisconsin teams were "conservative". That was a choice to be dominant in the run game, use play action and bootleg in the passing game to control the clock and grind teams into submission. These Iowa teams are trying to be good offensively, even if it's not with intent on scoring 30+/game, but they are incompetent.

Yet the B1G is the conference that 70% of Allbuffers are jonesing to get into for 16-13 game scores and road trips to W Layayette, Lincoln, Champaign-Urbana, Lansing, Iowa City, etc.

I understand the money issue but the B12 is arguably much more interesting as a football conference than the B1G is, in terms of Actual Football Games.

Take away tOSU and Michigan and the B1G is a frozen wasteland full of cheese, grain, sausage, pond hockey, and shuttered steel plants.

It's working, even if it does boil down to winning with defense & special teams while not giving the game away on offense. That's the only thing that matters - they win.

Sure, but they are winning in spite of bad offensive football. And I mean bad football, not conservative football. There is a major distinction that I laid out.

It'd be like the Broncos rolling out their 2015 squad every year, making it to the Wild Card round and losing each time, and coming back the next year with the same thing.

Except it's college football and not everyone has the chops to be great at everything, so programs commit to an identity, win more than they lose when successful, and maybe have a special season when they happen to have a QB who is good enough to be drafted. Iowa is not Michigan.

But they are trying to be good on offense, they are just inept. Kirk Ferentz did not commit to the identity of inept offensive football. Their identity is to play complimentary football, run the ball well, control the clock, let the defense dominate and put teams away in the 4th quarter. That's not what they're doing. They simply can't move the ball and can't score, despite trying, and somehow their defense and special teams have still played well enough for them to reach 9-2.

It's great that they are winning, but it's easy to see why people look at them with a critical lens.

I have been saying for a while that all this money coming in and being spent on coaches and a facilities arms race was going to inevitably result in players saying, "where is our cut?". And it's hard for me to argue that they are simply amateurs trading their abilities to a non-profit entity in exchange for a free college education.
You hear these stories about SEC schools that hold classes in the Athletic Dept buildings with professors paid by the AD and you wonder WTF? What should happen is the schools should license the use of the school name and logo and facility and drop the educational pretenses and pay the players. If the players want to go to school they can enroll like everyone else. Id bet like 2/3 of them wouldnt even bother.

I know that sounds extreme but with the portal and the NIL we seem to be on our way to that destination.

Why does winning close games against teams outside the top 50 impress you? Beat someone and you have a point.

Wonder what that would do to title 9?

If the football team was no longer part of the university, then it would seemingly make the bar of proportionality much lower by removing the sport with the most male athletes.

If the FB team was no longer part of the U, financially challenged schools could drop some women's sports and still be in compliance.

It would also make it so matching sports for men & women have the same size rosters instead of the women offering more for the same sport.

Maybe it means that CU could have Men's Soccer, Volleyball, Lacrosse and Tennis without having to add any Women's sports.
