Cross Country- Off and early season news and results (Wisconsin Pre-Nat races Saturday)

(Still a big pack, so probably doesn't mean too much, but Buffs showing in 15th at the split, with the ducks leading.)

Brianna Schwartz finishes one spot behind 2nd place team finisher (and NCAA podium contender) Oregon's 5th runner and a couple ahead of winner Arkansas' 5th, so VERY solid performance for her. Nice finish also for the 2 frosh, finishing 2nd and 4th among the Buffs.

The "B" team's 10th place finish is out of 35 teams scored; not bad at all.

Buff men's race scheduled to start in around 15 minutes.

In the 2nd women's (White) race, VERY good result for New Mexico, with their 4th and 5th finisher farther up than they were the last race, and their top 2 finished 1-2 with the winner around 30 seconds quicker than in the Cardinal race right before it. Assume they will take back the #1 ranking next week. (As I mentioned in an earlier post, not that it matters, but it will be fun to see what they do to the Buffs poll-wise where they just didn't race their top runners in the biggest race to date in the season.)

Looks like a much better finish this go-around for the men compared to 2 weeks ago.

Congrats to them- keep on grinding!

MADISON, Wis. — After a let-down at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational two weeks ago, the University of Colorado men's cross country team knew it needed a big day on Saturday at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational.

That is exactly what the Buffs got as they recorded a third-place finish on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, the site of the NCAA Championships in November. A big part of that performance came with the return of Joe Klecker to the lineup, who missed the previous race due to a small injury. He came back strong on Saturday afternoon, leading the Buffs with a fifth-place individual finish.

Colorado did not send its varsity women's team to the meet since the top-ranked Buffs have the points needed for the postseason, but instead gave its 'B' team a chance to compete. CU's 10th-place team finish as very respectable in a field that featured nine ranked teams.

"I'm happy with how we did in both races," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "We learned what we needed to learn and we got to see a lot of our opponents. Coach (Heather) Burroughs is back in Boulder with our women's 'A' team and she will be crunching all of these numbers and will have charts, graphs and comparisons by the time I get home tonight."
...

"Two weeks ago we ran without Joe Klecker, and that makes a big difference in our team score," Wetmore explained. "Today he was where we would have expected him to be. Ryan had a nice race. John maybe didn't have his best race and Lalo (Eduardo Herrera) could be better. But then our fifth man, where points are really coming in fast, Ethan Gonzales, had a really good day. We took a little step. It will change the rankings back to something a little more realistic and yet we have 13 days to go to be rested and peaked for the Pac-12 Championship."
...

"Bri Schwartz had a pretty good race two weeks ago at Stanford, but had a very good race today leading this group," Wetmore said. "She is somewhere between our fifth and seventh runner, so she is certainly going on to the Pac-12 as she gets better with each race."
...

Wetmore was quite happy with how the women's team performed, especially since they were competing against many varsity programs.
"Tenth for that group is respectable," he said. "There are teams behind them that would be hoping to advance to the NCAA. That is something we talked about before the race. I said, 'You are running against varsity teams. Prove to yourself that you would make other varsity teams.' And they did. I was very happy with that group."

Oregon's Jessica Hull won the race in 20:03.2, outkicking Arkansas' Katrina Robinson, who was six seconds behind (20:09.4). Seventh-ranked Arkansas won the team race (51), defeating No. 4 Oregon by 20 points (71).

UP NEXT: The postseason begins as the Buffaloes head to the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships, October 26, in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal will host the event at the Stanford Golf Course.

Officiall results for both races (designated "Cardinal") in which the Buffs ran-

Note- the National polls aren't released until later today, but in the regional rankings (http://www.ustfccca.org/2018/10/featured/2018-ncaa-di-womens-cross-country-regional-rankings-week-5), the Buff women stayed ahead of (national championship favorite) New Mexico, so assume they will also retain their #1 national ranking, in spite of not sending their top runners to Wisconsin this past weekend. (New Mexico did have a solid win in Wisconsin running their "A" team. The other team that might leap frog the Buffs, #2 Boise State, didn't send ANY team to Wisconsin, so assume they'll either stay #2 or get moved back to 3 this week.)

The Men did move up 2 spots (to #3) in the Mountain region (http://www.ustfccca.org/2018/10/fea...ns-cross-country-national-coaches-poll-week-4 (behind only HEAVY National championship favorite Northern Arizona and their main challenger BYU***). So, I'd assume after being ranked #11 in the last national poll, the Buffs at minimum move up to #9 in today's national poll.

(***I'd guess if there was gambling in cross country, that the odds are somewhere north of 90% that either NAU or BYU will hoist the championship trophy in late November.)

Fun short video on what is probably the most famous training ground for the distance running Buffaloes.

Fun.

Only a certain kind of lunatic describes this as fun:

Training to be a distance runner is incredibly painful. Props to the cross-country Buffs.

It's a bitch. The CU USMC platoon used to do conditioning hikes in full combat gear up there. Maybe they still do? It definitely hardened us so that when we went to official training situations, it wasn't a big deal.
