Cross Country- Pre and Early Season news and races

Article on today's home races (EDIT- Inserted wrong tweet originally.)

"
BOULDER — In what has become a tradition, the Colorado cross country teams won both the men's and women's team titles on Saturday morning in the 32nd running of the Rocky Mountain Shootout at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course on CU's South Campus.

Both teams performed quite well. The women scored 16 points to best Northern Colorado (42) in the NCAA Division I race, while the men totaled 17 points to best Air Force (55), Colorado State (76) and Northern Colorado (93).

...

NOTABLE: CU's men have won the last 27 shootout titles and 28 of the last 32…The women have won 19 straight titles and 25 of the last 26 races.

UP NEXT: The Buffs are off until Oct. 13 and 14 when the squads will again split for a pair of meets. Part of the team will compete on Oct. 13 at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis., while the rest of the team will race at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Ky.

Awesome news. I've been wanting them to do this (and bitching about them not doing this) for a few years, so props to the Pac for showing it live this season.

Also, thankfully they don't really matter at all in cross country (or track) for NCAA selection purposes, but various new rankings have come out.

In the main (Coaches') national poll that is on the NCAA website, the women remain 1st while the men moved down some from 4th to 7th.

Video interview by Mark Johnson with Coach Wetmore, both reviewing the last races and previewing this weekend's races-

(I was interested how he was splitting up the teams with 2 BIG meets scheduled for this week- Wisconsin Nuttycombe on Friday and Pre-Nationals on Saturday. Sounds like the current top 7 for both men and women are, as usual, going to Pre-Nationals (as the name indicates- always held at the site of the current year's National Championships, this year in Louisville KY), while other runners are going to Wisconsin. Note that the fields in Wisconsin are probably just as strong (if not maybe stronger) for both genders, so the coaching staff should get a great indication as to who might deserve to earn a "promotion" to compete as part of the final 7 that might end up racing at the championships.)

"
BOULDER – For the second straight race week, the University of Colorado will split its cross country teams, sending part of the team to the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational and the rest to the NCAA Pre-National Invitational.

The Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational will take place on Friday, Oct. 13, in Madison, Wis. The meet, which is in its ninth season, will be split into two sections. The 'B' races, which the Buffs will be participating in, start at 10 a.m. MT with the women's 6k race. The men's 8k race follows at 10:40 a.m. MT. All races will be held at Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis. Results from the races will be available at: go.wisc.edu/2017Nutty.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, CU will have its varsity squads race at pre-nationals in Louisville, Ky. The top-ranked CU women and seventh-rated CU men will use this chance to preview the NCAA Championship course at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park. The NCAA Championships will be held on Nov. 18 at the same course.

Pre-Nationals is split into two team races for the men and women due to the amount of teams competing. The first race of the day, the men's 8k seeded red race, will kick off the day at 8 a.m. MT. The women's 6k race is to follow at 8:45 a.m. The unseeded black races will go after the red races, starting at 9:30 a.m. MT. Race results will be posted at gocards.com.

Both races will be streamed live on FloTrack, although a subscription is required.

Live Results- Louisville's website says to just go go gocards.com, so assume the above linked-to homepage will provide final results as they become available. In the seeded ("main") women's race in Wisconsin, New Mexico once again confirms their status as a/ the major challenger to the Buff women (pending of course how the Ducks and others fare against the Buffs tomorrow), as they take the win, with USF (the San Francisco one) and No. Carolina State finishing 2nd and 3rd. (As with the Penn State race the Buffs barely won a couple weeks ago, the top 4 for New Mexico once again showed they'll be tough to out-score, finishing 1st, 4th, 7th and 15th. Their 5th runner, however, once again finished quite a ways back, this time in 60th.)

Edit- wanted to add Stanford didn't run 3 of their top women here (or in their last race). At some point, the odds one or more is not racing because of injury becomes more likely, which would probably doom their team's chances of competing for a NCAA podium spot or championship. But, if they are just being held out for tactical or training reasons, it's thought they could still have a very tough team.

A couple Buff related notes (from the above results) -
  • Southern Utah, who beat the Buffs in their last race at Penn State, come in 7th here, with the Rams finishing just ahead of them. In other words, looks like it's going to be a fun and challenging Mountain Regional race in a month or so, and the Buffs are probably going to have to show good development before then, and get a decent finish that day, to easily qualify for nationals.
  • Just like last year, looks like the Buffs will, at minimum, need to pull an upset over Stanford to keep their string of never having lost a Pac 12 men's XC championships race intact, and UCLA could also be in the mix from those teams who raced today. (There are also teams like the Ducks who the Buffs will be facing tomorrow who will I assume also provide tough competition at Pac 12's in a couple weeks.)

MADISON, Wis. — The Colorado Buffaloes put on a great show in the 'B' races at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday with the women taking first and the men placing second.

The women's team, which led for the entire race, recorded a total score of 35 points to best Michigan State, which recorded 60 points. Boise State finished third in the race with 80 points and Washington State was fourth (111).

The men were second to Stanford as the Cardinal narrowly defeated CU by a score of 60-66. Michigan State was third with 78 points and Colorado State tallied 95 points for fourth overall.
...

QUOTE:
Associate Head Coach Heather Burroughs
Thoughts on the women's team performance
"The women ran as a whole very well. We had women in there who were interrupted last spring and are battling back and fighting for varsity positions. Melanie in particular was impressive. It was a nearly solo race for her. She was in second place from nearly a kilometer to the finish, which is a hard way to run it, so she really impressed me. Val and Tayler were also excellent."

Thoughts on the men's team performance
"Stanford is a very good team. On paper they probably should finish ahead of our men in this race. I would say through three or four, our men were very good, but then the others were kind of hanging on to dear life in the final kilometer. I think Mark [Tedder] would agree that was his best cross country race. That's intriguing for us. He's a graduate student, he's new to us and he's looking like he can be a varsity runner for us in the next month."

Also, there was a more general interest article on the Buff women in Flotrack released late yesterday evening for those interested - http://www.flotrack.org/article/626...rado-women-just-want-to-have-fun#.WeFrwWiPLIU

Less than 10 minutes until the Buff men toe the line in Louisville at the biggest races of the season to date for them and the women (who, as noted above, start at 8:45 AM MT).

Very unofficial at this point, but much stronger-looking result for the men this race, with Klecker pacing the team as normal (9th place finish), but a lot more support this time, with junior Forsyth and redshirt freshman Herrera finishing in 11th and 14th, respectively, and the 4th and 5th runners in the top 45. As a team, the Buffs look to have finished 2nd, which will hopefully equal some nice NCAA qualifying points when regionals are run.

Note- cause for possible concern in that assumed Buff co-leader (with Joe Klecker) John Dressel not showing up in the results at all. Ideally, it's just a timing issue. 2nd best, he didn't race because of something MINOR!

Results are now official and Buff men's 2nd place finish is confirmed- http://www.rtspt.com/events/ncaa/prenats17/mp/ .

Again- much nicer performance this time, although Dressel not racing could be worrisome as to the Buffs' podium hopes this season if there's anything major going on.

After Mountain Region Northern Arizona's dominating win yesterday in Wisconsin, fellow Mountain region team BYU dominates THIS race. Definitely looking like the Buffs are in the "Murderers' Row" of regions this season.

AND, the women are ready to go-

Buff women in 3rd UNOFFICIALLY behind Arkansas and Oregon EARLY (after 2K of the 6K race).

Buffs now 2nd (at 4K timing mark) with 89 points (still within range of Oregon's 67 points).

Buffs lose a LITTLE ground at the last pre-finish (5K) timing/ scoring point- now at 99 points while Oregon leads with 69.

Unofficially, looks like the Buffs will be losing their #1 ranking (After last season maybe a good thing?), as Oregon is showing with the win 72 to 100 for the Buffs.

Official final score is 63 Oregon to 91 Buffs. (Women's results show below the men's at http://www.rtspt.com/events/ncaa/prenats17/mp/#event2 .)

(For those who don't follow the sport closely, looks like the reason for the difference between unofficial and official results is that, in official scoring, runners who ran individually rather than as part of a team (such as the Winner Purrier from New Hampshire) don't have their finish counted for team purposes. Therefore, for example, Dani Jones shows as giving her team only 2 points, even though she finished in 3rd.)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Colorado recorded a pair of runner-up team finishes on Saturday morning at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational at E. P. 'Tom" Sawyer Park.

The seventh-ranked men's team finished second to No. 2 BYU. The Cougars tallied a score of just 41 points, while the Buffs totaled 118 points. CU finished ahead of Pac-12 rival, No. 8 Oregon, which picked up 129 points.

The top-rated women suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to second-ranked Oregon, 63-91. No. 9 Arkansas came in third overall (148).

...

UP NEXT: The post-season is just around the corner for the Buffs with the Pac-12 Championships next up on Oct. 28 in Springfield, Ore.

QUOTES:
Head Coach Mark Wetmore
On the men's overall performance

"Some of our men ran very well. We are running without John and we'll have to see if we will be able to bring him back in time to help us in two weeks. One guy had an off day, Zach, and then the other guys ran pretty well. So we have 3/5's or 4/7's of a team that can get better in the next couple of weeks."

On the women's race
"We knew going in that Oregon was very good and it was quite possible they would beat us; they beat us in the NCAA 11 months ago. We have a couple little tactical mistakes, which maybe we can fix and maybe not, it depends. We have some people who have tendencies towards repeating certain mistakes. So Coach (Heather) Burroughs and I will talk to them, maybe strictly, to see if we can solve that by the Pac-12."
