Senior defensive tackle George Hypolite, dubbed the “Rabid Goldfish” in last November’s South Park introductions for the Nebraska game (he’s taken it in stride) is on the official watch lists for five major awards that honor defensive players. Five? No player in CU history has been on the list for that many at any point during the season (of course with the proliferation of awards in the last decade, a sweep like George has pulled off could only happen with four). He’s on the watch lists for the Lombardi Award (one of 54 preseason candidates); the Ronnie Lott Award (one of 42); the Chuck Bednarik Award (one of 75); Bronko Nagurski Award (one of 88); and the Outland Trophy (one of 70). He is a second-team preseason All-America choice by the Sporting News, Lindy’s Big 12 Football and Nationalchamps.net, while Athlon named him to its third-team; he is also one of 47 defensive tackles on the Football Writer’s Association of America preseason All-America checklist. Lindy’s ranked him as the No. 4 DT in the nation, while Phil Steele’s College Football tabbed him at No. 10. A unanimous choice for preseason first-team All-Big 12 honors across the board, including by USA Today and the Big 12 Media.
