Yup, for Tad this win was much more valuable than a 20 point blowout could ever be.

He will be able to tear them up in film study and bust their tails on the practice court and at the same time remind them that they have what it takes to win close games.

A game that builds confidence without going to their heads.

This is the kind of game that will keep them coming back. Fun throughout with a good ending. Lots of action.
 
Only positives coming from me, because I’m sure there was enough negatives in the thread during the game, some deserved criticism, and probably some completely off the mark:

Being in the arena again is fun!

Resiliency, very easily could’ve folded.
When Evan is on the floor, we’re pretty tough. He’s gotta stay on the floor though.
PGs were better than I expected. Kee and KJ are capable. They’re not Kin, but no one should expect them to be.
Jabari is special when he’s engaged. He’s gotta figure out how to keep the switch on though.
Eli is a rock. He’s just solid across the board.

So much fun to eat a Dark Horse burger and watch a helluva game with CU winning.

Weak crowd. Decent student attendance.

Mask compliance 60-70%. They did have people holding "mask required" signs at each staircase and twice during the game had a guy holding the sign walk down and up the stairs -- this caused most of the anti maskers to temporarily pull them up. I congratulate CU for trying something.

How did Lovering get blocked? Was it #13? even if, Lovering had 5" on that dude.

When did Battey pick up #4 foul? He sat a while, but it seemed he played with four for a long while in 2nd half and all of OT.

Montana State deserves credit, they are a good team. They're going to be a problem for a lot of teams and this was a good test for us. So glad we answered the bell. I could see Montana State making the Tourney. This is probably going to turn out to be a huge plus for us in the NET and RPI rankings down the road.

Fair criticism of player performance is acceptable. I don’t agree that he was a liability all night, but it’s a fair take. He didn’t have a good game, but gave some minutes to spell the other guys and that’s whatever.

This was a great win. Not an easy opponent to start the season, super happy to sneak a win out and am not bothered it took a big comeback or overtime. Just win. Welcome to college basketball everyone, it’s gonna be a ride. Ranked Ohio State barely beat Akron who they were favored by 16 over. Ranked Houston needed overtime to beat Hofstra who they were favored by 18 over. Ranked Virginia lost to Navy where I don’t even think there was a betting spread. It’s awesome.

Only disastrous if you are going off of name recognition. That team is loaded with 23-24 yr olds, they are going to win a lot of games this year.

A loss to MtSt would end up being fine in RPI / NET by the end of the year.

Luckily doesn't matter.

Well, what I stated was facts. The coaches see it too. They seem to be very frustrated and are constantly trying to coach him up at every opportunity - timeouts, going into halftime, coming out of halftime, on the bench. More so than other players. I think Tad knows he's got to have him. The problem is it looks like the talent and speed of D1 is too much for him right now. After watching him live in HS and watching his film, I certainly had my opinions of his game and made them known on this board early on. In the end, I very much hope it clicks for the kid. We're going to need everyone we have this year.
 
Lots to like about this win. Lots. Thoughts.

1) Tad appears to have been right that at least two dudes look to have taken significant steps. Kee & Nique. To be determined on Silva. He was in foul trouble but contributed while in. Nique was in the closing group though. Absolute game changer for us on both ends of the floor. Lots of defensive hustle plays. 9 rebounds. Smart offensive play. A wing making 1v1 plays on his own and willing to do so? Haven't seen that on a Tad team since...? He was very close to getting a bunch of steals that just went out of bounds. Loved his game. So fluid on offense. Kee was fun to watch. Definitely see how he's modeled his game after Kin's. He's a little bigger, plays above the rim more, and has a better shot, and he's just getting started. Let's see how he does when his shot isn't falling, but that late season surge from him was not a mirage!

2) Bari was an absolute disaster most of the night last night with 6 turnovers, only one of which was iffy or weird (the travel), but still made a lot of game winning plays. The pass to Eli on the broken (what else does Tad call to end games?) play to tie the game in the last 30 was just one of them. The usual threes mixed with some defense and clever makes inside. Really nice to see him struggle, but not foul and still help the team. Maturity! This reminded me of Dre's first 10 games in his 3d season when Tad let him prove to everyone whether he was a guy who could create his own offense at will. Hopefully it works out better than Dre's, he certainly has the talent to do it but last night was real rough at times.

3) Tad completely changed the game (and saved it) by simplifying the defense to all switch all the time in the 2d half. They never adjusted. While they did get some easy buckets, their offense stagnated with a lot of TO's or near TOs that allowed us to go on our run. Tad mentioned this in post game, but they were killing us on switches. Something was broken there. Nice call coach!

4) Students. Holy ****! They filled up the student section and then started filtering over into our greybeard seats. They even got to sing **** um up a lot! Attendance was great. Activity still not matching the Spencer years group, but wow, to even be mentioning them in that vein one game is DOPE.

5) MSU came out and just punched this team in the mouth. Blocks, etc. They were the better team on the evening despite not having the athletes we do (I love being the team with better athletes). They looked confident, knew what they were doing, and the only thing that saved us in the first half was hot 3 point shooting. The refs called a bunch of soft bull**** (both ways, but concentrated on our bigs because they were actually going inside the paint unlike us) that took us way out of our comfort zone. They were a team that was greater than the sum of their parts. But we still won thanks to good adjustments, talent, and grit. Such a good sign!

6) How we broke the press was a breath of fresh air. Both guards (Kee and KJ iirc) were comfortable handling it (when was the last time we had two guards that could handle the press?). Nique stepped in and was great too. Having someone with his height and ability to handle the ball is a blessing there. A welcome change from hero ball by double teamed Kin.

7) KJ! He's going to be so good.

Plus, that was fun as ****! I got three hours of sleep (thanks kiddo 2) but this was ****in worth it!

Now to work before this coffee wears off.

I'm always impressed with coaches who can get minority players to come to places like Bozeman, Laramie, Logan, etc. The Washington transfer is going to dominate in the Big Sky, but Seattle to Bozeman? Talk about culture shock.
 
- The student section was great. Good numbers and there when we needed them down the stretch. The general population was meh.
- Tad may have a heart attack at some point this year. He about had one a couple of times in the 1st half. Bad defense and turnovers were killing him.
- Kee has definitely matured and elevated his game. Parquet ran point at times, but with Simpson having the maturity and providing the spark he does, I'm betting by about 7-8 games in, the PG position becomes exclusively Kee and KJ, which is great becuase it will allow Parquet to focus on what he does best at the 2G.
- The officials were atrocious for most of the game. Like, prime PAC12 bad. Luckily, they pretty much let both teams play down the stretch. Some of the calls on Battey and Lovering were absurd. How do we still never get any help at home?
- Not enough movement and too many lazy passes on offense for large portions of the game. We've seen it at times before, but fixable.
- Walker can dominate a game...if he wants to. Dude needs to learn to flip the switch the second he comes out of the tunnel, not 30 minutes into the game.
- daSilva and O'Brien had the poorest games on the team. Both seemed lackluster from the get go.
- I'm going to have to eat some crow on Clifford. Against Mines he was a bit meh. But at Nebraska and last night he proved he's a very valuable piece. I dare say he could easily be an 8/8 guy which would be huge this season.
- Impressed how Lovering handled the offense running through him when he was in. Now, he just needs another 20lbs of muscle and a 12ft jumper and he'll be a bad, bad man.
- Montana St is well coached, experienced and pretty talented. Money says they finish Top 2 in the Big Sky (which frankly could be better than the MWC this season if we're being honest)
- Onward to Last Chance U! I mean, New Mexico.

Nice to win. I think KJ Simpson is pretty talented, but he is a little ball happy. I would imagine he is used to aking over games with his skill in HS. He needs to learn to dish the ball a little more.

Fun game to watch, at least once CU got back into it.
 
Clifford is going to play a lot this year simply because of his rebounding and defense. I am not going to put him on the same level as Bey and Roberson, but he has some real hops and always seems to be in the right place at the right time for the rebound. I believe that Clifford played the entire OT period, and that tells me a lot about how Tad feels about him. Thoughts on who has more starts by the end of the season: Clifford or da Silva?

I gotta say, Da Silva was huge down the stretch when we needed him to play the 5 for a few minutes. THAT is exactly what we need from him - solid D, boxing out, and just doing the little things. I feel like he was trying to do too much the first 2/3 of the game. Don't know if he was trying to live up to Tad's hype or what, but it scared me. I was glad to see last year's Da Silva come back at the end.

We were switching everything, and everyone was huge in keeping in front of guys. But yea, I was real worried when he came in and if anything his speed helped out there. Definitely seems more comfortable/fluid out there.
 
Montana State is a team that is going to give the Big Sky problems.

They were a very good opponent for what our team needed to see at this point.

We have better athletes but they had some quality size and some experience. They were perfect to reinforce the message that Tad wants to drive into this team that if we don't work on defense and take care of the ball any team can beat us.

This was also a great game in terms of learning that these guys can count on each other and that they can win tough games.

This is huge because last year in tough games they would just turn the game over to Kin. Important to learn that they can deal with tough games without Kin on the team.
 
Wow, that was a fun game. Really nice to see some resilience on the team. They definitely need to find an offensive identity. They were all over the place, especially in the first half. Lots of talent on the team, though. Gonna be some bumps, but this is going to be a fun team to watch.

Yeah, they are a solid team. They've got some players. Just glad to see the Buffs pull one out.

RaQuon Battle may be the piece that puts them over the top in the Big Sky. He can be as good as anybody in that conference.
