The Buffs (last season - 12-11, 8-8 in conference), after this past Sunday's scrimmage vs. Mines, play their 1st 2 "real" games of the season on the road, heading off to face the (Receiving Votes (RV)) Oklahoma State Cowgirls (last season - 19-9, 13-5) early tomorrow evening, followed up with a Sunday matinee against the Air Force Falcons (last season - 8-18, 4-14). (The AFA start their season this evening, hosting the DU Pioneers.)

Note - Obviously doesn't mean much for this season, but just for some reference, last season the Buffs ended their 2020/21 season ranked #45 in the NCAA NET rankings and #36 in the Massey ratings. OSU ended up #'s 21 and 16, respectively, while the AFA was at #'s 215 and 217.

The OK State game is scheduled to be shown on (the premium ($) subscription service) ESPN+, while Sunday's is supposed to be available for free on Mountain West Digital. (See info near the bottom of this thread for more info and links.)

Colorado Opens at Oklahoma State on Wednesday

STILLWATER, Okla--
The Buffaloes will kickoff the 2021-22 season against longtime Big 12 rival Oklahoma State on Wednesday. It will be the first time Colorado has started the season away from the CU Events Center since playing at Samford to start the 2017-18 season.

Colorado is 42-5 all-time in its season openers and has won the last 20, dating back to the start of the 1999-2000 season.

Along with Hollingshed, the Buffs return Pac-12 All-Freshman Frida Formann and Pac-12 All-Defensive team selection Jaylyn Sherrod. Seniors Peanut Tuitele and Lesila Finau enter their fourth year in the program, playing valuable minutes since their freshman season.

The Buffs shook off the cobwebs in the team's 63-52 exhibition win over Colorado Mines on Nov. 1. The Buffs overcame a slow start to build up a 26-point fourth-quarter lead. Sherrod led the Buffs with her nine points and three steals. Finau and Tayanna Jones had eight points apiece.

"I think it's always important to be able to play under the lights, especially after not playing in front of any fans last year," head coach JR Payne explained. "It was really important to be able to get out and play in front of people and try different lineups and get everyone on the floor. Besides practice, that's the only preparation we have for a great team like Oklahoma State."

The Buffs and Cowgirls have a long history but haven't met since Colorado left the Big 12 for the Pac-12. CU and OSU have each won 26 games in the series. Oklahoma State has won the last six games in the series, with CU's last win coming in a 73-62 matchup in 2006.

Wednesday's renewal comes with both teams coming off postseason appearances to cap the 2020-21 season. The Buffs advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT, while Oklahoma State advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

"They're [Oklahoma State] a Big 12 team who has had a lot of success," Payne added. "They're playing on their home-court on opening night, also for the first time in front of fans in a long time. They are a tough opponent and we're excited about the challenge. We're going to have to be at our best to handle business down there."

Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. MT on Wednesday. The game will be streamed online on Big 12 Now/ESPN+.

I will be paying the $$$ to watch the Okie State game. I well remember that gym. I'm sure it's seen a lot of renovations when I was there but it used to have a balcony that felt like it was on top of the court along with the bleachers on the lower level. It was a difficult place to play then.

Beat the Cowgirls! Oh the games back in the Big 8 and Big 12 games that were played in that arena and some epic games against Okie State in Salina.

Nice start for the team, as they lead 15-6 after one quarter.

As the score indicates, not a great offensive quarter, but the defense earned 8 turnovers. (I can't remember, but believe the announcers said OSU is only returning either 24 or 29 of their average points, so hopefully the experienced Buffs will continue to benefit from experience.)

Pretty even 2nd quarter. OSU had a couple small runs to get the lead down to, I believe 4 and 5 at different points, but then the Buffs end strong to take a 12 point lead (32-20) into halftime.

Agree we need more offense. Hoping it was first game jitters. Team relied too much on Mya and that isn't going to work all season. Free throws have to improve.

I thought at the time that the 3 by Frida in the 4th quarter was key to slowing down the Cowgirls and just read the same thing on cubuffs.com.

OSU only had two scorers and we did not shut them down.

Good first game. Certainly better to learn from than a home blowout. Defense is ahead of the offense and I'm sure there were some first game jitters.

At least Maura Singer got to check in, although not for long.

Cory Lopez on the radio broadcast said Aubrey Knight hurt her other shoulder and has had surgery and is out for the season

I didn't get to see the game, but when's the last time a JR coached team won a non-conference match-up with another P5 team. And one that was in the NCAA tourney last season and is expected to next? In her time in Boulder, there would be a win against a team like OSU at home in the non-conference portion of the schedule and then have gone on to post a losing record in the Pac-12. Hopefully this is a harbinger of a very good season.

In JR's previous seasons, she wouldn't have had a non-conference game with a good P5 school. It would have been a cupcake game or a mid-major team that they should beat.
Yeah. OSU on the road was an eye opener when I saw it on the schedule. The fact we controlled that game from the opening tip to get a win has me trying not to overhype. I think this could be the most special WBB season in a long time.

It appears that with Hollingshed coming back (she's got a unique skill set), a solid group of seniors, the two transfers from Washington and perhaps Kindyll Wetta there is talent and depth. This is the season in that there most likely will not be this level of talent and depth in following seasons.

With the win at Okie State the Buffs have set themselves up for a very successful non-conference run.

Also, the conference schedule doesn't have that feeling like so many years in the Pac-12 when 7-10 games were pretty much no-hopers going in.

Mya has to be one of the players to improve the most during 4 years at CU and now she has a 5th. She was raw talent with attitude and a bit of a temper as a freshmen. Got several technical fouls as a freshmen and never liked a foul call against her. She has worked very hard to both strengthen her body and to become a better basketball player. She has accomplished both, has a college degree and is working on a graduate degree.

I didn't see this kind of talent when she first arrived. That is why I don't coach basketball. I didn't see this kind of potential in her.

Brian Howell, who does a really good job with WBB imho, sent me a quick note last night on JR's scheduling.

Actually, she has scheduled a Power 6 opponent in the non-con every season (including some ranked teams) and has a great record in those.

What stands out with the OSU game is that these games are almost always home or neutral. Taking the risk of playing a 2nd round Dance team on the road and winning should have a big reward for the NCAA selection committee resume sheet.

2016/17 beat #15 Kentucky
2017/18 beat #24 Miami lost to North Carolina in OT
2018/19 beat North Carolina

I’m surprised Brian said that, over the last 5 years they played away at multiple top 25 teams taking NC to OT.
2016/17 beat #15 Kentucky
2017/18 beat #24 Miami lost to North Carolina in OT
2018/19 beat North Carolina lost to Miami

the OSU game was a nice win but OSU lost their top 4 players and 70% of their scoring. They will be a 12-14 win team this season. Our non conference schedule is terrible this year, hopefully it won’t matter

To clarify, what Brian said was the 2nd paragraph. 3rd paragraph was my perception / opinion.

Looks like I forgot a key point in my last post about winning v a non-conference P5 team on the road. That's what makes me optimistic about this season. And I get from BeABuffs' post that Okie State might not be a tourney team this season.

Concerning the wins at home v Kentucky. etc., they ended up being an anomaly in that once conference play began the losses started to pile up.

Mya looks to have worked really hard through her career to improve her interior play to go with her three point shooting. I felt she was a good athlete, but wasn't sure how she would do in the long run.

In the 11/9 iteration of bracketology on ESPN, Okie State is in the "Next Four Out" grouping, with Colorado still in the "Last Four In" grouping as a 10 seed. So it seems like it was a good road win for us.

A road win is always a good win, especially with Okie State being in the Next Four Out.
