LOS ANGELES – The Colorado soccer team travels to southern California this week for a pair of matches. The Buffaloes will take on UCLA on Thursday and Southern California on Sunday.
Both matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
Colorado (9-2-1, 1-1-1) dropped out of the United Soccer Coaches rankings, following disappointing weekend against Oregon and Oregon State. CU got just one point on the weekend, coming in a 2-2 draw against Oregon.
"Sometimes that is the game," head coach Danny Sanchez explained. "Sometimes you get outplayed and get a result. Other times you outplay them and don't. Credit to the Oregon schools that came and got results. Now we turn our focus to this weekend."
The Pac-12 Conference has been solid from top to bottom this season. Every team in the league has at least one point. No. 2 Stanford leads the pack with nine points. No. 22 UCLA started the conference season 0-2, picking up its first win last week over Arizona State. No. 4 Southern California is right behind Stanford in the standings with six points (2-1-0).
"UCLA had a couple of mixed results but got a great result against Arizona State on Sunday," Sanchez added. "USC is just trucking along. They have battled some injuries like we are, but they are just getting results. If you can go anywhere on the road in the Pac-12 and get results it is huge."
Colorado outshot both Oregon and Oregon State last week. The Buffs rank third in the Pac-12 with 17.3 shots per game. CU is in the middle of the conference in scoring, totaling 24 goals this season.
"We will need to play well," Sanchez continued. "All three of our conference games I felt like we have played really well, and we are 1-1-1. We could be 0-3, we could be 3-0. That is the game. It's probably fair if you look at it but we are playing with a lot of confidence as we should."
The Buffs haven't fared well in southern California. Colorado is 0-5-0 all-time at UCLA and 2-2-0 when visiting USC. CU is a combined 5-16-0 against the two schools all-time. CU's last win against either school was a 1-0 win at home against UCLA in 2016.
"We are excited for the weekend," Sanchez said. "We have a lot of Buff supporters in southern California so we expect a big crowd of Buff fans."
