BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's volleyball team enters the final week of their regular season facing Arizona on the road and hosting Utah for senior day.

The Buffs (18-10, 10-8 Pac-12) defeated both teams earlier this season, but the stakes are high as CU currently sits at a 46 RPI ranking and are the 32nd team in RPI rankings currently not leading their conference for an automatic bid. There are 32 automatic bids for conference winners, with 32 more spots for the top RPI teams that do not get an automatic bid.

For the Buffs to have a shot at extending their season, they'll need to win at least one, if not both matches this week.

CU is entering their last week after a roller-coaster travel weekend to Washington. The Buffs defeated No. 21 Washington at UW for the first time in program history Friday night. The Buffs hit .347, and earned 41 digs and four blocks to hold the Huskies to a .231 hitting percentage.

Unfortunately, the Buffs ran into an obstacle in the form of No. 25 Washington State Sunday and lost in four sets. The team hit .197, earning 45 kills compared to WSU's 61.

For the weekend, Katie Lougeay led the team in digs with 19 while Lexi Hadrych led the team offensively, earning 24 kills and a .327 attack percentage.

The Buffs face Arizona at 1 p.m. MT Wednesday. The match will be shown on Arizona's Live Stream.

Friday, Colorado faces Utah at 3 p.m. MT, and the game will be streamed on Pac-12 Mountain. Prior to the match, the Buffs' seven seniors will be celebrated.

ARIZONA

Over the weekend, the Wildcats (15-14, 5-13 Pac-12) defeated Cal in five sets, but were swept by Stanford. The team has been averaging 12.4 kills and 13.8 digs a set. Outside hitter Sofia Maldonado Diaz leads the Wildcats in kills, averaging 3.12 a set with a .214 attack percentage. Defensively, libero Kamaile Hiapo has been frustrating her opponents' offense by picking up a little over four digs a set.

UTAH

The Buffs opened their conference play by sweeping the Utes (15-14, 8-10 Pac-12) and now will close it by playing their conference rivals once again.

Utah was swept by both No. 25 Washington State and No. 21 Washington over the weekend, extending their losing streak to three. Before playing the Buffs at home Friday, the Utes will look to snap the streak against Arizona State in Tempe Wednesday.

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Colorado women's volleyball defeated the Arizona Wildcats (25-19, 24-26, 25-22, 25-17) here Wednesday afternoon in four sets.

On The Match

"From an offensive standpoint, I thought we played at a very high level. Except for a lull in set two, we passed extremely well, and Taylor and Brynna made great [setting] choices."

On The NCAA Tournament

"We are definitely on the bubble for the NCAA selection, and this win puts us on the right side of it. We are excited to come home and play one more match in front of our fans Friday."

A few unrelated notes:
  • I signed up awhile ago to receive the current Buffs' RPI with a website that constantly updates them as matches finish throughout the NCAA. In the latest email I received from them after yesterday's win (along with other results from prior CU opponents AND their prior opponents), the Buffs are still at #46.
  • Utah suffered a tough upset loss yesterday, losing to ASU in Tempe. With the result, Utah (who was already borderline for the NCAA's with a #56 52 RPI before the match) probably lost their tournament chances. However, even to be considered by the committee, they need to beat the Buffs tomorrow, as they currently have a 15-15 record. (For those not aware, one of the NCAA's rules is that a team with a sub .500 record can NOT be selected to the post-season tournament.)
  • The preview article quoted in the original post mentioned that 7 Buff seniors will be honored tomorrow. (Hope a few of you in the area can attend the match!) With the roster listing 5 seniors and 3 grad students, looks like that means all but 1 at this point plan to move on. (I assumed a large number must be moving on/ graduating based on the pretty large 2023 freshman class announced earlier this month.)

With yesterday's win:

  • The Buffs are #43 after the win in the latest live RPI rankings I received, so should be in a VERY safe position to be selected to the tournament.
  • They finish Pac 12 play at 12-8, which ties the 2017 team for best Pac 12 record for a season. Like that team, that record equates to a tie for 5th in conference. (This season, the Buffs end up tied with Washington.)
  • The overall 20-10 record insures this will be the 3rd Buff team in the Pac 12 era to have at least 20 wins, joining 2014 (which ENDED 20-14 after a heartbreaking 5 set loss (14-16 in the 5th) in the round of 32 @ CSU) and 2017, which ended 24-10 after reaching the Sweet 16 by upsetting Baylor in straight sets @ Waco on the round of 32.

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's volleyball took down Utah in four sets (19-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-17) on senior day during the Buffs' final season game at CU's Events Center.

With the victory, the Buffs (20-10, 12-8 Pac-12) achieved their first 20-win season since 2017. It also marks only the 13th time since 1988 that the Buffs have recorded at least 20 victories during a season.

Utah's (15-16, 8-12 Pac-12) offense was led by senior outside hitter Madelyn Robinson, who achieved 24 kills and hit .224. Sophomore Lauren Jardine was the only other player on the team who earned double-digit kills with 15. Sophomore setter Grace Hammond earned a double-double with 48 assists and a career-high 18 digs.

For the Buffs', Maya Tabron earned a double-double with 12 digs and 14 kills with a .225 attack percentage. Setters Taylor Simpson and Brynna DeLuzio evenly distributed the offense as each Buff attacker had over five kills and the setters earned 27 and 21 assists, respectively.

Lexi Hadrych had 11 kills, followed by senior opposite Jill Schneggenburger with nine. Senior Kelley Levaggi achieved a new career-high with seven kills and hit .467. Senior middle blocker Meegan Hart earned seven kills while middle blocker Alexia Kuehl achieved five. As a team, the Buffs hit .276 on the match.

The Buffs will find out if their season continues into the postseason during the NCAA Selection Show Sunday at 5:30 p.m. MT on ESPNU.

QUOTES

Head Coach Jesse Mahoney

On The Match

"It was a good competitive match. Utah got hurt and struggled down the stretch of the season a little bit, but [they're] super talented. Madelyn Robinson can win matches for anybody. We started off a little slow in set one. I am really proud of how we responded in sets two, three, and four. One of the things I love about this team is the total team effort. If you look at the stat line, everyone participated in the win. I am just really proud of them and proud of their season. They got better as the season went on. We'll see when the selection show comes, but I think we've done everything we need to do to move into the tournament."

On The Regular Season Finish

"I think this is a really special team, and in the COVID-era, you're seeing teams like this with kids that are in their fifth and sixth seasons. I don't feel like there was a time in this season when we felt stressed or like we had to win this one or we had to win that one. We just kind of went out and played really good volleyball, and one of the things we did well this year was that we were good on the road. We had some good road wins. We hadn't done that in some years past. That Oregon win was a little bit of a heartbreaker for us because we felt it was within our grasp. But we responded, and I think our team and our players had faith in each other. They willed themselves to the second half of the season and got better."

On What's Next

"Hopefully, the kids take a little time off and celebrate and enjoy the accomplishments, and then we'll meet together Sunday at 5:30 and see where we're headed. And then we are back to business. We might be flying on Tuesday or Wednesday, just depending on where we end up."
