Matches Thread- VOLLEYBALL hosts (RV) WSU (Friday, 10/14/22, 5 PM MT) & #15 Washington (Sunday, Noon MT)

The volleyball team (12-4 overall, 4-2 in Pac 12 play) faces probably their toughest combined weekend to date, as they play the Washington schools this weekend at the CUEC. 1st off is an earlier than normal 5:00 PM MT start against the RV (Receiving votes) WSU Cougars (12-5, 4-2), followed up with the usual Sunday noon matinee, this weekend vs. the #15 Washington Huskies (13-3, 5-1).

Note - In the most recently released (dated 10/9) RPI ratings, CU is at #36, while WSU is at #42 and Washington is at #16.

Both matches are scheduled to be available on the Pac 12 Networks. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's volleyball team hosts a pair of tough conference opponents with Washington State coming to town Friday at 5 p.m., followed by No.15-ranked Washington Sunday at noon.

The Buffaloes (12-4, 4-2 Pac-12) split the last two weekends against the Los Angeles school on the road and the Bay schools at home. The Buffs are in a three-way tie for fourth in the conference with No.17 Oregon and Washington State at 4-2, while Washington is in a three-way tie for first in the conference with USC and Stanford.

Colorado continues to lead the way on the defensive front with the team ranked fifth in the NCAA in blocks per set at 2.89. Alexia Kuehl and Meegan Hart are both over 70 blocks this season with Kuehl leading the way with 78. In total, seven Buffaloes have 20 or more blocks this season.

Both matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks with Friday's match on the Mountain Network and Sunday's on the Washington Network.

WASHINGTON STATE
The Cougars (12-5, 4-2 Pac-12) have only lost matches to ranked opponents this season in BYU, Pepperdine, Minnesota, Washington and Stanford. WSU took down USC in five sets in Los Angeles and is coming off a weekend sweep of the Oregon schools that included upsetting No.12 Oregon in five on their home court.

The Cougars are hitting .275 this season and holding opponents to a .194 hitting percentage. Washington State is also averaging 1.9 aces per set compared to letting up 1.1, and have a block advantage of 2.4 per set to 1.6. WSU spreads out the ball with Lauren Jansen, Pia Timmer, Magda Jehlarova and Katy Ryan all with 140 or more kills. Timmer, Karly Basham and Julia Norville all have more than 20 aces this season.

WASHINGTON
The Huskies (13-3, 5-1 Pac-12) have losses to Arkansas to open the season, Pepperdine and Stanford, all in four sets. Washington also upset Oregon in five sets at home. UW is hitting .311 this season, good for fourth in the NCAA. They are also eighth in kills per set and 13th in assists. They are averaging three more kills per set than their opponents but are letting up 2.1 aces per set to their 1.8.

Claire Hoffman leads the way with 4.12 kills per set hitting .283, while setter Ella May Powell is averaging 10.86 assists per set. Hoffman also has 27 service aces this season.

BOULDER- Colorado women's volleyball Head Coach Jesse Mahoney celebrated his 300th collegiate win Friday night as Colorado defeated Washington State in four sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-15, 25-9).

The Buffs (13-4, 5-2 Pac-12) took the first two sets against the Cougars (12-6, 4-3 Pac-12) but dropped the third to extend the night. Colorado came storming back in the fourth set to secure a victory.

Maya Tabron caught fire early in the match and stayed hot throughout the night. She finished hitting .324 with 18 kills. Lexi Hadrych also hit double digits in kills with 11 and a .348 hitting percentage.

Taylor Simpson tied her season high of kills with three and notched 27 assists in the match.

Colorado out hit Washington State .289 to .136 and had 13 more assists. The victory is the Buffaloes' first against the Cougars since 2017.

The Buffs finish up their three-game home stretch against Washington on Sunday, Oct. 16 before hitting the road against Oregon State Oct. 21.

On Offense Efficiency in First Two Sets
"Yeah, I think, again, we've been getting a little bit predictable. If you watch teams play us, they kind of know where the ball is going a little bit or where we want to be and like I said, Taylor, and Brynna did a really nice job of throwing some curveballs there tonight. We were kind of overloaded on the right side early, and then, you know, went back to the left, and then came back to the right. They didn't really know where the ball was going. On top of that, I thought we passed extremely well and our setters had a lot of options, so yeah, it was a fun night."

"We don't really talk about the past a whole lot around here, maybe every now and then but in general I don't want to remind them before we're going into a match, hey this team has beaten us seven times in a row or something like that, right. But you know, no one beats us eight times in a row. How about that?"

On 300 Wins
"Yeah, well, 300 wins, that just mostly means I'm old. But there's a lot of people, these two players, obviously, this whole team has been a part of it. Meegan and Brynna have been here for probably 100 of those which is pretty awesome, and then going back to some early days with a lot of players. I've been lucky to be a part of great programs, and had great players and great assistant coaches and nothing we do in a team game is dependent on one person. I've been around for 300 wins. I'm not sure they're 300 of my wins."

On Rotation Matchup vs WSU
"No, we knew it was coming. She's athletic and she can essentially choose two shots. We were defending one shot and she was choosing the other shot. We made a little bit of a change in set four and not sure she dumped in set four, I can't remember essentially, so we didn't have to worry about it as much. Every team that we play has kind of a base. This is what they like to do and we try to slow that down and then they start to adjust and we start to adjust and it's kind of who can adjust best and who can execute there at the end. They got caught in a really bad rotation in their rotation one, which we spent a lot of time on on Thursday, because it's not a good rotation for them. That was the match right there. We cracked them open."

It's 10 all in the 1st. Painful refereeing in this one, as after spending over 3 minutes after the 1st coach's challenge, the down ref has been spending over 5 minutes stopping play, I'm assuming over questions of Washington's rotation.
 
TO Buffs. Down 13-19 in first.

UW’s coach threw a 10 minute tantrum and Buffs lost momentum after that.
 
Gotta get SOME production from the middle and right-side.

Right now those 4 are hitting .000 with 7 kills and 7 errors to show for their 30 kill attempts.
 
Buffs mount a furious comeback, bring it within one, keep close and are now falling behind again. 15-20. TO Buffs.
