As with some of the other "individual" Buff sports, thought we could start accumulating any news and results during the regular main (spring) season regarding the men's golf team (ranked "No. 54, Golfweek; No. 65, GolfStat" after the fall off-season) in one consolidated thread.

I plan on starting individual tournament threads once post-season begins, which starts with the Pac 12 Championships scheduled for late April.

(Note- don't know how great I will be at always keeping this updated, so anyone who sees anything regarding the clubbing Buffs is more than welcome to add updates to this thread.)

Anyway, to start with, sounds like the team is having to "tough it out" to start the year, as their 1st tournament is on the Big Island of Hawaii.

WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i — It's almost like a broken record, but in a good way, as the University of Colorado men's golf team will open the spring portion of its schedule for the 13th straight year here Thursday in the 27th annual Amer Ari Hawaii-Hilo Invitational.

The tournament, which runs this Thursday through Saturday, is one of many that open the spring collegiate season and should provide an early indication of where the Buffaloes stand nationally' by their own admission, they had a rather pedestrian fall, finishing down the line in the rankings (No. 54, Golfweek; No. 65, GolfStat). Those are still well within qualifying range for the NCAA Championships.

One again the field comprised here is one of the strongest in the spring, with seven of the nation's top 18 teams from the final Bushnell Coaches poll of the fall set to compete here, including top-ranked Oklahoma State and No. 4 Georgia Tech. Others include Auburn (No. 9), Stanford (No. 11), Texas Tech (No. 13 and the defending champion), Texas (No. 16) and Southern California (No. 18). Overall, 10 teams in the nation's top 50 are participating, and as always is the case, the 18-team field is saturated with Pac-12 Conference teams, six of which are competing this time around.
...

Six Buffaloes are on trip: seniors Spencer Painton (71.2 fall stroke average), Yannik Paul (71.9) and John Souza (72.3) and sophomores Daniel O'Loughlin (71.0, the team leader) and Trevor Olkowski(72.6). Sophomore Victor Bjorlow (72.3) rounds out the Colorado contingent as he will be playing as an individual while the other five will count toward CU's team scoring total in the event. O'Loughlin, Olkowski, Painton and Souza played in all four fall tournaments, while Bjorlow and Paul competed in three.

Buffs in the middle of the pack (tied for 10th out of 18 teams) in a still-tight tournament after 1 round (only 9 strokes out of the lead).

WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened the spring portion of its schedule here Thursday, ending the day in a 10th-place tie after the first round of Hawai'i-Hilo's 27th annual Amer Ari Invitational.

No. 16 Texas is atop the leaderboard after 18 holes, as the Longhorns posted a 9-under 279 team score, good for a one stroke lead over No. 1 Oklahoma State (280). Just two shots back at 281 are No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 13 Texas Tech and No. 40 TCU.

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 54, are tied for 10th with Pac-12 rival and No. 41 Oregon, as both recorded 1-under par 287 scores on the 7,074-yard, par-72 Waikoloa King's Course layout. Overall, seven top 20 and 10 top 50 teams are competing in the tournament.

Colorado opened the spring season for the second straight year with a subpar team score, and the ninth time in its history – all since 2000.
...

NOTES: The average score in the field for the 114 competitors was 73.25 (Colorado's six players came is at 72.5) … The 10th and 16th holes (both par-4s) played the toughest Thursday at .40 and .37 over par, respectively, but the five CU scorers tamed each, collectively recording 10 pars … Conversely, the par-5 4th hole was the easiest, playing to .61 under par, with the five scorers scoring an eagle and four birdies, with Bjorlow also adding a birdie … The Buffs tied for the second-most pars (58) and played the par-5 holes the fourth-best at 10-under.

The Buffs lost a little ground in positioning, and Ok. State had a great round to take the lead by 9 strokes over 2nd place and 24 over the now 11th place Buffs, who lost the services on one of their 5 rostered scorers, as he's evidently sidelined by illness. Looks like, from the leaderboard, the 3rd and final round is just underway.

Buffs end up in 11th in the tournament held on the Big Island. (Interesting, especially with the small margin of error in golf, that this tournament, at least from the Buffs' 11th place finish, ended up "chalk", as the top 10 team finishers were the only 10 teams listed on the leaderboard.

Article after the final day's action - http://cubuffs.com/news/2018/2/3/mens-golf-golfers-finish-11th-in-uhhs-amer-ari-invitational.aspx

"
WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado men's golf team, playing minus one of its best players due to illness for two-thirds of the tournament, finished a respectable 11th Saturday as the 27th annual Hawai'i-Hilo Amer Ari Invitational came to a close.

Top-ranked Oklahoma State ran away from the field, winning by 17 strokes in posting a 47-under par 817 team score. That bested No. 13 Texas Tech which held on to second place at 834, while No. 15 Southern California jumped from fifth into third at 837. No. 16 Texas was fourth (841) and No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 8 Auburn and No. 40 TCU all tied for fifth at 842.

Colorado, ranked No. 54, battled here despite being one man short the last 36 holes and finished 11th with an 11-under par 853 score. There were 10 teams participating here ranked in the nation's top 50, and all finished ahead of Colorado, but the Buffaloes rallied to hang in there and had three players post final round scores in the 60s, topped only by Oklahoma State with four (three schools had two).

The Buffaloes, shorthanded during the last two rounds after sophomore Daniel O'Loughlinhad to withdraw due to the flu, recorded two of their top three rounds in the program's history here when having to play in a "4-score-4" format. That means all four participating players have their scores count toward the team score with no margin for error as in the standard "5-score-4" drill. CU had a 4-under 284 on Friday and bested that with a 6-under 282 in the final round.

Seniors Spencer Painton and Yannik Paul led the Buffalo attack, as each tied for 13th in finishing 54 holes at 8-under par on the 7,074-yard, par-72 Waikoloa King's Course layout.
...

The Buffaloes will return to action in two weeks, as they will travel to Palm Desert, Calif., to participate in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, Feb. 16-18.

NOTES: O'Loughlin entered as CU's stroke average leader (71.0); had he been healthy and conservatively scored 71 in each round, CU would have finished 12 strokes lower and in the top five … Even though CU had a player participating as an individual on the trip (Bjorlow), rules don't allow substitutions once play begins thus he could not sub for O'Loughlin …

Another very good round for the Buffs. Hope they keep it up through the final round tomorrow!

Golfers Remain In Third At Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

Buffaloes Enjoy Another Solid Second Round In The Desert

PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team recorded another spectacular second round score on the same course it set a school mark on a year ago, but remained in third place after Saturday's play in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.

California, ranked 15th in the nation, not only maintained but expanded its lead with a 14-under 274 score, giving the Bears a 27-under 549 total through 36 holes. No. 9 Texas Tech held on to second with a 12-under 564 score, but the No. 52 Buffaloes are on the Red Raiders' heels with an 11-under 565 total. No. 21 UCLA and No. 36 Kansas are tied for a distant fourth, both with 3-over 579 tallies.

In matching its third-best single round score of the '17-18 season, Colorado tied a school record for the most consecutive rounds under par with seven, done once previously during the 2013-14 season. All five rounds in the spring have been in red numbers, and the season count for rounds of par or better now stands at 14, two shy of the school mark. In the second round on this same course in 2017, Colorado scored a school record 22-under 266.

Very solid tournament for the (last week) #52 rated Buffs. They defeated four Top 40 teams and only finished behind two Top 20 teams, so assume they should be comfortably in the Top 50 this week (although admittedly have NO idea how the ratings are calculated for golf).

Golfers Finish Third At Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

Paul, Buffs Set School Marks In Solid

PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team closed with another solid round and overall had an excellent tournament but in the end finished where it started, in third place as the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate came to a close here Sunday.

No. 15 California ran away from the field, winning with a 47-under par 817 team score, easily topping No. 9 Texas Tech, which was second after each round in finishing with a 27-under 837. The No. 52 Buffaloes finished third at 19-under 845, but were in second place for much of the first two-thirds of the day before cooling off a bit while the Red Raiders caught fire down the stretch, playing the six holes 13-under par.

In fact, CU had to hold off a charging UCLA for the bronze honor, as the No. 21 Bruins shot the second best round of the day – and tournament – with a 19-under 269 to finish with an 848 total (Cal closed with a 268). The Buffaloes did defeat four of the six ranked programs competing here and should climb back into the nation's top 50 in this week's rankings.

The Bears dominated the event from start to finish, with its scorers each day combining for only 19 bogeys in 216 holes of play, while scoring 66 birdies.

In the process, Colorado established a school record for the most consecutive rounds under par with eight, topping the old mark of seven set during the 2013-14 season. And with all six rounds in the spring under par, the season count for rounds of par or better is now 15, one shy of the school mark set on two previous occasions.

Yannik Paul tied for fifth individually after wrapping things up with a 5-under 67, a round that included a 30 on the front nine. He opened strong, starting with a par on No. 1 and then reeling off four straight birdies and had six in all at the turn. He ran into a little bit of trouble with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12, but ended his day with a seventh birdie to record a 9-under 207 for 54 holes.

Note- In the Notes section of the article, I did learn something- that like with most of the team sports most of know the rules to better, a .500 record against D1 opponents is needed to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Sounds like the Buffs are well on the way to that not being ANY factor in their getting a Regional Berth (assuming they continuing to grind and get solid results). Quoting the article- " Colorado was 20-2 here against Division I competition, improving it season record to 75-28-4, a 71.9 winning percentage; schools must be .500 or better to qualify for the NCAA postseason unless they are a conference champion."

Article on the 1st two rounds - http://cubuffs.com/news/2018/3/13/m...eventh-place-in-lamkin-san-diego-classic.aspx (Looks like the Buffs are only behind teams ranked higher than or around their (#47) ranking.)

"
CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team bounced around the standings over the first two rounds of the Lamkin San Diego Classic here Monday, eventually settling for seventh place heading into the final 18 holes.

No. 1 Oklahoma State, the unanimous top team in all three rankings, played like in taking a commanding 17-stroke lead with a 23-under par 553 score. Co-host and No. 48 San Diego State holds second place at 6-under 570, with No. 9 Texas Tech and No. 22 North Carolina tied for third at 4-under 572. No. 35 Arizona is fifth (573), with No. 30 Colorado State sixth (578) with the No. 47 Buffaloes next at 3-over 579.
...

The third and final round is set for a 9 a.m. MDT shotgun start Tuesday. The Buffaloes will be paired with Louisville and Mississippi.

NOTES: The morning under par team round was Colorado's 16th of the season of par or better, tying the school record set in 2013-14 and again last year … The average score Monday was 73.56 (73.39 in the morning, 73.74 in the afternoon) … The par-3 holes are proving the toughest here, as Nos. 3, 13 and 6 are played the second, third and six hardest through two rounds (the Buffs have played those at 6-over, even and 3-over, respectively) … The Buffs have played the par-5s second-best to Oklahoma State at 14-under (OSU: minus -21) … CU alum and '96 U.S. Open champion Steve Jones is back competing on the Champions Tour, finishing sixth in the Toshiba Classic in Newport Beach, Calif., this past Sunday; he turned in a 7-under scorecard (68-69-69) in his first event on the CT since 2015 (he plans on playing in five or six this season) … Speaking of alums, this will likely be the first time the Buffs have been paired in a round with Louisville, as the Cardinals are coached by Mark Crabtree ('78), in his 19th year as head coach at UL (they were paired several times in his nine years as head coach at Colorado State) … The Buffs last played a tournament in the San Diego area in the spring of 2011.

36 holes in, looks like this is a tight tournament going into tomorrow's final round.

Looks like a solid tournament finish for the Buffs, as they finish 3rd, behind only one team ranked behind them (#76 Miss. State finished 2nd) and ahead of 2 teams ranked above them.

"
PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team had its best single round this weekend here Saturday, and thus was able to move up two spots into a third place finish as the inaugural Kansas State Bighorn Invitational came to a close.

No. 15 Illinois broke open a tightly contested logjam at the top of the standing, running away from the field with a team score of 40-under par 824 after firing a sizzling final round score of 20-under 268. The Fighting Illini entered the day with a four-shot lead with five teams separated by a total of eight shots, including the Buffaloes in fifth. No. 76 Mississippi State played its best event of the year in finishing second, 10 shots back at 30-under 834, with the No. 47 Buffaloes in at 21-under 843 to take the bronze spot in the standings. No. 30 Brigham Young and No. 35 Kansas tied for fourth at 13-under 851.
...

"It was good to see a really hot start out of four of the guys," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "They all hit it really close and made good putts. We just tapered off a little bit in the end, but that didn't hurt us in the standings.

"We beat some good teams, Illinois just ran away with it and Mississippi State had a good week," he added. "Going in, I thought we had a chance if we could turn in a round of 15-under or so, but Illinois shot lights out. Kansas and BYU have had good years, so we picked up some quality wins here and did it on a course where you had to manage your game or you could be all over the place."
...

The Buffaloes will return back to California on Tuesday for its next competition, Stanford's "The Goodwin," slated for next Thursday through Saturday (March 29-31) in Palo Alto. CU is paired with Northwestern and San Francisco in the first round and will tee off at 1:25 p.m. MDT.
