Olympic Sports- Transfers (incoming and outgoing) and other roster news

The soccer team continues to be BUSY, as it looks like they've got their third Coloradan transfer coming back to their home state. Also for the 3rd time, the student-athlete was only a frosh this past season, so I assume could have up to 3 seasons to play with the Buffs. The newest known addition is midfielder Riley MacDonald, who spent this past season at NCAA tourney team LSU, where she saw limited action over 10 matches.

Hailing from Highlands Ranch, She spent her prep years at Mountain Vista HS, while also playing club ball with Colorado Rush. (Assume all 3 new Buffs, (along with some current one's), will be familiar with each other as all 3 were in the same club program.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

Soccer continues to be the main source so far for transfer news this academic year, as the team has formally announced another incoming transfer for next season of a Colorado student-athlete (the 4th so far), and the 2nd who is coming in from NCAA tourney team LSU. This time it's 5'9" defender Casey Swierenga, who hails from Denver and attended Lutheran HS. A couple small differences I see with the 1st 3 2025 incoming soccer transfers noted - she will be a junior next season (the other 3 will be sophomores), and she competed with the Real Colorado club program (the other 3 were with Colorado Rush).

Per LSU's stats (https://lsusports.net/sports/sc/cumestats/), she started the majority of LSU's matches last season (16 out of 21), and played the 3rd most minutes on the team (not counting a goalie).

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to her!

From the updated list in the below tweet, looks like the soccer team has picked up a 2nd incoming transfer, and once again it's a Colorado student-athlete coming back to her home state.

This time it's tall (5'11") defender Jordan Whiteaker, who's from Littleton and spent her prep years at Dakota Ridge HS, where she was named the United Soccer Coaches 4A state player of the year after her senior (2023) season one which saw Dakota Ridge win the state championship. She also played club ball with Colorado Rush.
(Unlike the prior soccer transfer, Ms. Meyer (see post #266), I can't find a social media post confirming Ms. Whiteaker becoming a Buff. However, her Instagram profile does reference @cubuffssoccer, and already references #5, which I assume will be her CU #.)

She should be a sophomore for the Buffs next season after spending her true frosh year with regular season Big 12 champion TCU, where she logged 1 assist while playing an average of 28 minutes over 18 matches with the Horned Frogs.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Some highlights from her prep club team -

The team has now posted about her transfer (the 3rd of 4 known and previously posted about soccer transfers in this thread that is now official).

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to Ms. Whiteaker!

Just noticed, that in the latest iteration (see below) of the transfer listing that's been my source for all the soccer transfer news I've been posting about, there's now a FIFTH incoming transfer, and for the 5th time it's a Coloradan. (It's also verified by her Instagram post.) She is midfielder Reagan Kotschau, who I assume will be a junior for the Buffs next season after spending her 1st 2 college seasons at Washington State. With the Cougars, she was named to the All-Pac 12 frosh team after a 2023 season where she logged 4 goals and 2 assists, and All-WCC honorable mention after this past season after scoring 1 goal and leading the Cougars with 6 assists while logging the 5th most minutes on her team. (She was also ranked the #41 frosh player by topdrawersoccer.com after her 2023 season.)

Per the WSU roster page linked to below, Thornton is her hometown and attended Bloomfield HS during her prep years. She also looks to have had a storied club career with Real Colorado, where she was named the 2022 U17 ECNL National Player of the Year after leading her team to the Club Championship in August of that year.

Welcome and congrats to her!

With all the incoming transfers, thought I'd also quickly browse the list*** in the above tweet to see if I could see any other outgoing Buffs on the list. One did catch my eye, this past season sophomore defender Angelina Moschetti, who tallied 1 goal and 1 assist while averaging ~15 minutes in 19 matches played with CU this past season. Per the list, she is transferring to Waco where she will play for the Bears.

Best wishes to her.

(***Since the list is pretty long and only shows their new school, and I don't know all the Buff names off-hand, I could have easily missed another outgoing transfer.)

There's a cleaner image of the overall transfer list in the below tweet. In that, I see a 3rd outgoing soccer transfer, forward Claire Curren, who looks to be heading to Oklahoma. As a sophomore with the Buffs this year, she tallied 2 assists while seeing time in every Buff match, averaging 28 minutes per match.

Best wishes to her in Norman.

Per the volleyball transfer worksheet I linked to in post #268, looks like there's a 3rd outgoing Buff in that sport. After already being recognized at the team's Senior Day festivities, middle blocker Bella Simkus is evidently in the portal. She was listed in the roster as a senior in the roster lead page, but from her bio looks like she had one redshirt year, so assume will be a redshirt senior next season.

Assuming she does end up transferring, wish her nothing but the best at her new school.

Per my main source for volleyball commits (both prep and transfers, https://www.richkern.com/vb/recruits/indexsub.asp?Div=DI&VBYear=2025 ***), CU looks to have a new commit. That source only gives names, so I'm not 100% sure it's who I think it is, but based on the time of year and the fact she is showing as an outgoing transfer at her old school in the transfer workbook I show in post #268, it looks like it probably is 5/8" libero/ defensive specialist Peyton Neal, who it looks like will be a junior at CU after spending her 1st 2 seasons at Marshall (which is in Huntington, WV). Before college, Ms. Neal attended Nolensville HS in the city of the same name in Tennessee.
(*** As I like to always mentions, this website's free page only lists commits for the last 3 days, so her name won't be visible after today.)

From Marshall's stat page (https://herdzone.com/sports/womens-volleyball/stats/2024), she led the Thundering Herd in digs per set (4.16), serve receive % (.959), and aces per set (0.30). (Looks like she didn't play the last 6 matches this past season, so would GUESS she either had health issues or had decided to move on at that point. From the Marshall volleyball page, looks like the team's coach resigned last week, and per the transfer list Marshall has SIX outgoing players in the portal.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

Best wishes to her where ever she ends up, Boulder or ???

Colorado Volleyball Adds Transfer Peyton Neal to 2025 Spring Roster

Sophomore defensive specialist/libero Neal will join the Buffs roster this spring ahead of the 2025 season

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

BOULDER –
The Colorado volleyball team has signed transfer sophomore defensive specialist/libero Peyton Neal (Nolensville, Tenn./ Nolensville HS) from Marshall University, head coach Jesse Mahoney announced on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

"We are thrilled to welcome Peyton to Colorado," Mahoney said. "She brings high-level experience, and we project her to be a great compliment to our current back court. Peyton is as competitive as they come and will fit in perfectly with our team culture."

An Eastern Michigan Tournament All-Tournament Team selection and UNCG Tournament MVP (2024), Neal led her team in digs as both a freshman and a sophomore with 408 and 333 respectively. She recorded 30 or more digs twice, 20 or more digs 12 times and double-digit digs in 37 competitions during her time at Marshall. In a match against Utah Tech during her freshman season, Neal contributed a career-high 35 digs, along with three assists and an ace (Sept. 16). In two seasons at Marshall, Neal played in 52 matches and appeared in 190 sets. She totaled 741 digs (3.94 dps), 175 assists, 59 aces and 62.0 points. Neal will have two years of eligibility remaining with CU.

Neal expressed her excitement for joining the Buffs and ultimately what made her choose CU to continue her collegiate volleyball career.

"I chose to continue my career at CU in order to combine high quality academics with a competitive environment full of talent," Neal said. "I know the coaching staff will push me to achieve my potential while playing alongside teammates who compete at the highest level. The staff and team made me feel welcome from the start, and I knew I had found something special. The campus is beautiful, and I am so excited to call University of Colorado my home."

Per the workbook I linked to in post #268 that tracks volleyball transfer, news on a couple outgoing Buffs:
  • The Buffs at some point had a 5th transfer enter the portal, this past season sophomore outside hitter Kendell Meller. That spreadsheet also says she's already found a new school, Western Kentucky. (I also double checked and the Hilltopper's twitter account ( https://NOPE/WKUVolleyball) has formally announced her signing.)
  • Also in post #268 I had noted that Tatum Johnson, a frosh middle blocker this past season, was the 1st outgoing vball transfer noted for the Buffs this transfer season. Per the workbook, she also has found a new home, and the Buffs will be seeing her a few times in the future as she's going to be a Texas Tech Red Raider. (Per season stats, she doesn't show as having played for CU at all this past season, so I assume she'll be a redshirt frosh for TTech next season.)
Best wishes to both of them at their new schools!

A couple volleyball-related notes from the database I linked to in post #268:

1) Re Peyton Neal (see posts 284 and 286) joining the volleyball team, looks like there's been a change, and she's evidently no longer coming to Boulder.

Best wishes to her at her new destination, evidently Charlotte.

2) Also, looks like a 3rd outgoing transfer has found a home, as the database is showing Emma DeSensi as going to USC (South Carolina) - Upstate.

Best wishes to her there.

Per the below, volleyball setter and CU grad Taylor Simpson, who was celebrated on Senior Day, has decided to be a Dawg for her 5th year (???) of eligibility. (As usual for almost all volleyball news I learn about, thanks to the Volleytalk forum for 1st alerting me of her move.)

Best wishes to her in Seattle.

She's already a Buff, but wanted to mention I didn't know until an article after a great race*** last Friday that women's cross country and track and field teams received a transfer (Believe she just started at CU this January) in distance runner Hannah Prosser, who hails from Wanaka, New Zealand and spent her 1-1/2 college academic years at Boston University.

My guess is she may be a redshirt frosh for track and field and this track season, and a redshirt sophomore in cross country this coming fall. (Her Boston Univ. shows her on last (2023/24) indoor and outdoor seasons track and field roster but says she didn't compete. And, she did compete for them in the 2023 cross country season but, although on their 2024 XC roster, I can't find any results or other indication she raced with them this past season.)
(***In what I assume may have been her 1st collegiate race in awhile, she ran the longest race in college, the 10,000M, and I believe already got her name in the CU record book with a top 10 all-time CU time at the distance.)

(Belated) OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to her!

Her CU roster page - https://cubuffs.com/sports/track-and-field/roster/hannah-prosser/17675

Per an Instagram post she made, Buff volleyball middle blocker Bella Simkus (who was included in the CU senior day ceremonies this past season) has announced she's transferring to Northwestern for what looks to be her redshirt senior year.

Congrats and best wishes to her.
(I've never verified it and am too lazy to, but I I've believe I've heard a few times in the past that one rule for grad transfers is that the school adding them have to provide TWO years of financial support towards their grad degrees. If that's true and she will qualify as a grad transfer, and at least based on reputation, Northwestern seems to be a SOLID school to transfer to for a student-athlete's future.)

(As usually is the case for volleyball, I learned this from a https://volleytalk.proboards.com/ post, so thanks to that forum.)

The men's golf team announced it has a transfer coming in from USC for next academic year. He is Jackson Rivera, who I assume will be a grad transfer with 1 or 2 years*** of eligibility remaining.
(***He was listed as a redshirt junior in his USC roster page linked to below, but only played 6 rounds again this season after only playing that many last season. Don't know if he might have a case for another redshirt year (or not?) if he and the CU coaches wish it?)

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to him!

His USC roster page - https://usctrojans.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/jackson-rivera/16776

At least from the outside it's been a little winding road***, but the volleyball team has re-announced that libero / defensive specialist transfer Peyton Neal is officially a Buff.
(***More info on her is available in my original post #285 above. After initially formally announcing her commitment a little later (post # 288), later info I found indicated that she was now going to the Univ. of Charlotte (my note in post #290 ). However, either that evidently wasn't correct or she and / or the team had another change in approach.)

Colorado Volleyball Adds Transfer Peyton Neal to 2025 Roster

Rising junior defensive specialist/libero Neal will join the Buffs roster ahead of the 2025 season

Per the below Instagram post (And I'd considered confirmed as Coach Carlson included the commit info in his Instagram story), the women's track and field and cross country teams have picked up THREE distance runners for next academic year.

They are:
  • Ashley Jones, a grad transfer*** who hails from Castle Pines and will be heading to the home state after spending 2 years at Tennessee (Coach Carlson's former home so assume he's coached her) and 3 years before that at High Point U..
  • Addison Dorenkamp, who was raised in West Des Moines, IA and will be coming to Boulder after spending her frosh year at Alabama and
  • Avery Pearson, another grad transfer*** who will be heading south after spending 4 years at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada. She also hails from the province, having spent, at minimum, her prep years in Meadow Lake.
(***I'd GUESS (???) that both the grad transfers will have at most 1 year of eligibility in all 3 seasons (cross country, indoor AND outdoor track and field) distance runners can compete in, but with all the uncertainties in NCAA rules right now, who (I sure don't) knows for sure.?.)

Welcome and congrats to them!

(From this, not looking like she has any results showing for outdoors, so assume she may be a redshirt frosh in that sport next season at CU. She does show some early season action indoors, so unless injured assume next season she'll be a sophomore indoors, as well as cross country, where she had a VERY solid full frosh campaign.)

The women's golf team has announced a new addition for next academic year in Maya McVey, who it looks like should have 2 (or more?) years of eligibility remaining at CU after spending her 1st 2 years as a mainstay of the Univ. of Central Missouri team that was the NCAA Division 2 runner-up in their National Championships that were competed a week or so ago. She looks to also hail from Central Missouri, with the below article noting her hometown is Blue Springs.

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to her!

Women's Golf Signs Maya McVey

By: Troy Andre, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
Maya McVey has signed a Financial Aid Agreement to join the University of Colorado women's golf team for the 2025-26 season, head coach Madeleine Sheils announced on Thursday.

McVey, a native of Blue Springs, Mo., comes to Colorado after two fantastic seasons at Central Missouri. She helped the Jennies to a runner-up finish at the 2025 NCAA Division II Championship. McVey was the runner-up at the NCAA Central Region and Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championships and won two of her three match play events during the national finals rounds.

A two-time Women's Golf Coaches Association All-Central Region pick, McVey had 12 top 10 individual finishes over two seasons and finished outside the top 25 in only three events. She helped the Jennies to 13 team wins, including a pair of MIAA titles and the 2025 NCAA Central Region championship.

"I chose CU for its highly competitive environment, the amazing coaching staff, and the chance to grow both on and off the course," McVey said. "I want to express my gratitude to coach Sheils and coach Mia (Landegren) for their support and for giving me this incredible opportunity to play at the highest level of collegiate golf. I can't wait to be part of such a strong team and represent the Buffs!"

McVey was second on the team in stroke average (74.10) as a sophomore with 10 under-par rounds, including three in the 60s, two of which came during NCAA postseason action. She was the 2023-24 MIAA Freshman of the Year, placing second at the conference championship.

"We are so fortunate to be adding Maya McVey to our roster this fall," Sheils said. "She is coming to CU after building a great foundation to her collegiate career at Central Missouri, earning a win this season and 12 top 10s over the past two years. Her game is on a clear upward trend, as demonstrated by the key role she played in Central Missouri's run to the NCAA II Championship Final last week.

"Maya has big goals and is fiercely competitive, but most importantly, she puts in the hard work and dedication necessary to make her goals a reality. She impresses me with her reputation for diligent effort, her fundamentals, and her on-course composure.

One thing, of many, I appreciated from coach Wetmore was that he prided himself on winning with US athletes. Not so much from a "f the foreigners" jingoistic viewpoint, but from a "it takes hard work and effort, but you can win championships with 'homegrown' athletes."

It was, of course, a self inflicted handicap to limit recruiting that way. Especially in a sport where the international talent is often better than the US talent.

I'm wondering if signing a Canadian is a trial run to see if there's institutional pushback from moving on from that particular philosophy, or if Carlson hasn't paid any attention at all to it and this is just the first of what will be many?

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just noting that it's a change and I'm wondering what the reaction will be. There is zero chance Carlson does not know that this is a departure for the program.

Calrslon has signed quite a few athletes from abroad. I think that was a Wetmore thing only

I haven't been paying attention.

It was maybe the one thing that made CU unique in distance running. We were elite with entirely US athletes. It was absolutely a differentiating factor.

I'm honestly conflicted on that going away.
