KRYNICA-ZDRÓJ, Poland – University of Colorado freshman Mandy Ortiz won the gold medal at the 29[SUP]th[/SUP] World Mountain Running Championship in the women’s junior division this past Sunday.
Ortiz, who was running for team USA, finished the 4.65-kilometer course in 22 minutes and 56 seconds, 11 seconds in front of Slovenia’s Lea Einfalt (23:07). She extended her lead, which was just two seconds, to 11 seconds in the last 250 meters to claim the victory. Turkey’s Tubay Erdal was the third-place finisher in 23:21.
The U.S. women ended up second at the championship with 17 points. Tabot Scholl was 16[SUP]th[/SUP] in 24:51 and Emma Abrahamson took 21[SUP]st[/SUP] in 25:21. Germany won the junior women’s division with 9 points and Russia took the bronze with 19 points.
