Snow is coming, leaves are on the ground and Week 10 is here already. This season seems to be flying by although for a few teams fans it can’t end soon enough.
This deep into the season and a surprising number of teams are still looking to reach 6 wins and bowl eligibility. There are 84 open slots for bowl teams and so far only about 36 teams have reached the minimum number of wins. This week and next a lot of teams will be trying to qualify while others will be looking to move into one that has a more prominent time slot and pays better. Who wouldn’t be excited to go to Boise in December for the Famous Potatoes Bowl or Detroit for the Quick Lane Bowl.
Meanwhile Nebraska fans will be preparing to spend another Holiday season at home reminiscing about moral victories and how other teams keep cheating by taking the ball away from Adrian Martinez..
We start this week on Tuesday and Wednesday with a full slate of MAC games. The only one of interest on Tuesday has one of those schools looking for bowl eligibility Eastern Michigan (5-3) at Toledo (4-4). Toledo has been unpredictable this year at one point almost upsetting Notre Dame one week then somehow losing to Colorado State the next.
Wednesday is better with Northern Illinois (6-3) visiting Kent State (4-4) and Central Michigan (4-4) at Western Michigan (5-3). No word on Southern Michigan, Northern Michigan, Upper and Lower Michigan and Lost Someplace in Michigan.
Lots of teams hoping to land a spot in some bowl most people haven’t heard of.
Thursday has Georgia State (4-4) hoping for an upset at Louisiana (24).
Friday we get Boston College (4-4) hosting Virginia Tech (4-4), two teams trying to salvage some good out of disappointing seasons. BC started off 4-0 but has since gone winless while VT lost one score games to rival West Virginia, Notre Dame and Syracuse.
The Friday night PAC12 game puts Utah (5-3) and winners of 4 of their last 5 at Stanford (3-5) who have lost 4 of their last 5 but somehow managed to beat Oregon for their one win in the stretch.
After a week of huge battles of ranked teams this week the schedule only gives us one. Auburn (12) is again involved travelling to the weirdness that is Texas A&M (13) in a pairing of 6-2 squads.
There doesn’t even appear to be many likely upset candidates with the other games but it’s rare that we don’t get at least one or two so who will it be.
Probably won’t be Missouri (4-4) doing it. They go to Georgia (1) In most years Alabama (3) hosting LSU (4-4) carries huge significance in the SEC, not this year with LSU already out of it and just trying to stay over .500.
Can Penn State (22) who has lost 3 in a row avoid making it 4 in a row at Maryland (5-3). Lose and they will feel worse than they did about Sandusky hosting kids on campus.
Most likely upsets may be with the ranked G5 schools as Fresno State (25) welcomes in Boise (4-4) who is better than their record but is looking to break their pattern of win one lose one all season.
Also UTSA (16) hopes to survive (on and off the field) a trip to UTEP (6-2) who’s fans are still trying to figure out how they have won as many games as they seem to have in some decades.
Not only is a long, hard winter on its way to the land of corn, meth, and scared females in polyester but so is another beating on the field. Nebraska (3-6) won’t have to worry about another close loss as Ohio State (6) which has blown out most opponents this year isn’t likely have much mercy on the huskers. Since they put the games on almost every radio station in the state they hordes of fans who show up will be able to listen to the end of the beating on their way home as they lose hope and leave at halftime.
Old Dominion (2-6) at Florida International (1-7) is the dog bowl game of the week.
For the blowout of the week look to FCS Idaho State (1-7) who’s only win is somehow against Dan Hawkins ranked UCDavis team at BYU (17.)
Who can figure out the PAC 12 this year as mediocre describes most of the conference. Oregon(7) is the only team with enough wins to go to a bowl game so far. Will they manage to kill the conference’s slim hopes of a playoff spot by losing at Washington (4-4).
Arizona State (5-3) can reach bowl eligibility this week hosting USC (4-4).
Huge game locally early Saturday. If you haven’t been to an Army - Air Force game should be on your bucket list. Army (4-3) plays Air Force (6-2) trying to deny the Zoomies a clear grip on the Commander in Chief's trophy, the top priority for service academy teams each year. Unfortunately for local fans this one is being held in Arlington Texas.
Heading north there should be plenty of available seats as CSU “Collapsing State” (3-5) goes to Laramie for the rivalry they can actually win against Wyoming (4-4.) Wyoming is trying to get back on track after losing 4 in a row.
Northern Colorado (3-6) has been better this year than expected but it would be a major upset if they beat visiting Montana (6-2).
In the RMAC we see what may be the game of the year. Western State, Colorado Mines, and CSU Pueblo are all tied at the top of the standings with one conference loss.
This week Mines (8-1, 6-1 conference) plays at Pueblo (6-3,6-1) Pueblo plays at Western next week so the have full control of their destiny.
