Our kicking situation

- Actually I can punt pretty well... Have you ever had a female kicker at colorado?

OUCH!!! And here I was, starting to like you.... :sad1:

:smile2: Welcome, and thanks for dropping by with the inside facts, and doing so with good humor...

Take a look at Crosby then Goodman's technique. Goodman has the most awkward looking kicking motion I've seen.

I guess I kind of view kicking like hitting a golfball: head still, pronation, foot (club head) speed, etc. There are a lot of great golfers throughout history that had "ugly" swings (Arnie, Trevino, Furyk, DBT). So, I don't think you can compare kickers by a photo. I think because Mason is stronger, he can be more compact in his kick whereas Aric needs to get more whip to generate the foot speed. So, I can see how it make take a little more to refine his accuracy.

The torso leaning backward (Goodman) doesn't look right in order to get full power going forward, but here's the thing ... we keep hearing AG does great in practice but has been "off" in games. So we should really be comparing a pic of him practicing at the angle of a similar pic in a game.

Not Crosby vs. Goodman, but Goodman vs. Goodman.

Actually what you should really be looking at if you're trying to dissect what's wrong with Goodman is his psych eval....it's all mental with this guy

Re: Our kicking situation - Update

Time for an update to this thread.

Jameson Davis

High school -
Eagle, Idaho. The longest field goal Davis kicked in high school was 47 yards, 2003 first-team All-Idaho 5A.
Nov. 2003 - Commits to Boise State
Spring 2004 update
- Is LDS and planned to take his two-year mission immediately following high school graduation ...
Fall 2004, greyshirts at Boise State.
2005 - put on scholarship for the Broncos program in spring 2005. He attended school that semester, and participated in spring football.
2005 (approx.) - Davis had surgeries on both knees to repair meniscus damage. Decides to go on 2-year mission to Guatemala.
2006 - Dan Hawkins, who signed Davis at Boise State, told him he’d have a spot on the Broncos roster when he returned from his mission. But Hawkins took the job in Boulder prior to the 2006 season. Hawkins offered Davis a scholarship to CU instead.
Davis is nearly 22 when he enrolls at CU.
2008 spring - Davis competed in spring football with walk-on Aric Goodman the former Cherry Creek player who transferred to CU from Wyoming.
2008 season - Redshirt Freshman Davis ... was 1-of-3 on field goals for the year (a 30-yard make late in the first half at Texas A&M). He was hampered all year with a knee injury (cartilage) to his plant leg, which affected him more on placements. He did kickoff 46 times, with 31 being returned anf 15 going for touchbacks. The average starting field position for the opponents was their own 29; he booted eight through the end zone, had five kickoffs inside-the-20 and 26 inside-the-25. He ended spring drills tied atop the depth chart at the position. He made his presence known right way, as he arrived with a strong leg and made 60-plus yard kicks in practice from day one. He joined the team for the spring semester, as he enrolled at Colorado in January after transferring from Boise State and completing his two-year mission for the Mormon Church. Come fall, he will have four years to play four in eligibility.

Aug. 31, 2009 - After light practice all summer to allow his knees to recover from surgery in January, Davis announces he will not play football for CU.

August 31 Game Notes:
Davis Hangs Them Up
Citing issues with his surgically repaired knee, sophomore PK Jameson Davis decided to end his football career on August 31. He had been struggling with constant soreness in his knee and never fully returned to the player he was prior to the injury. He made 1-of-3 field goals as a true freshman in 2008, after selecting to attend Colorado after serving his Mormon mission. He was CU’s No. 1 kickoff man, with 46 total; 31 were returned and 15 went for touchbacks; he had five inside-the-20 and a very respectable 26 inside-the-25.

I, for one, was really hoping that Davis would recover and have a great year. If he (or his sister) reads this, hope he knows we appreciate the effort, especially playing through pain. I understand and respect his decision, although I would have enjoyed seeing him play healthy.

Just never had the feeling that he would ever be a major contributor after the major offseason surgery. Wish him the best.

I also would not be surprised if this was a mutual decision reached between he and the coaches.

He made some kicks late in the season, where he was obviously struggling with the pain (my leg hurt just watching him kick). I really respect the fact that he was doing whatever he could for his teammates, and trying his best to suck it up. Best of luck to him in his future endeavors!

I guess my "sources" back in December were right.

I wonder if that was really his sis. Whatever, I feel bad for him. Hawk said he just was not blessed with good knees, that he is married and wants to get on with his life. Good luck young man!

Yes, just like Stan Musial had the worst hitting stance ever, at the plate!

Not comparing AG to The Man, but stance is an individual thing, whatever works for the kid, and besides didn't Goodman state he changed his approach and technique?

Why are you posting old pix, if that's the case? And comparing the phenom Crosby to anyone, makes them look average( please recall, kicking purists complained that Crosby stood too close to the ball and took more of a "punch" than a kick at it! They claimed he would never make it in the NFL, he was just a creature of the altitude in Boulder.......yeah, right!))

The thing is, it didn't work. Thank God he's changing his approach. Let's hope it works for him this year.

I want another kicker on scholly... No idea how good that walk on is, Money is a Junior, Dilallo graduates, and Grossnickle... lets just say no proven commodity there.

Maybe I'm just freakin' old but there was a time folks were up in arms about "soccer-style" technique replacing the traditional straight-on, old-school, Lou Groza approach.

Same goes for the trend toward "rugby-style" punting to counter talented return guys.

Seems to me whatever works is whatever works. Problem for AG is his head/confidence, not his leg or technique.

we won't need to kick this year. the offense will be so powerful that we will always go for it on 4th down and we will always go for 2 following tds.

it works on the ps3, so why wouldn't it work in real life?

huh?
