RG's search and how Dorrell got the job

Like most people I was confused by this hire. I assumed that I could at least take solace in the fact that this was the result of a thorough search, was a carefully thought out choice, and RG would be able to effectively sell why Dorrell was the right hire. However...

Piecing together what happened from various interviews...It turns how this monumental decision was basically the result of RG and LC sitting around and throwing out random names. Dorrell was such a "strong" candidate that they never even thought about him until the very end of the process. And this conversation happened on Thursday and just two days latter he got the job. There wasn't even a formal interview but instead they had a casual meeting in Dorrell's living room. Even Dorrell said he was shocked first that he was contacted at all and then by how this all played out.

Obviously this is not how you should go about making such an important decision, and that's an understatement. The whole thing is laughable, especially when it results in such an underwhelming choice. This is why many schools hire search firms...because some AD's have no clue what they're doing.

RG's explanation for the hire is basically a bunch of things that have no tangible effect on...actually winning games! Dorrell was hired because he's "a good guy," is "mature," he "wants to be here," he "understands CU," and "when you know you know." And if you're rightfully skeptical about this all "you'll just have to trust me." RG has repeatedly laid out a compelling vision for this football program. Yesterday's press conference was like cold oatmeal.

Clearly RG felt snake-bitten after being divorced by Melvin, left at the alter by Sark, and getting turned down by others. Not to mention dealing with complaining from Melvin, coaching candidates, and the media about CU's "limitations." Dorrell was the trusty blanket that made him feel cozy and safe. He became dismayed by the process and made a decision that was rushed and largely reactionary to what had unfolded during the previous two weeks rather then going through the process in a clear-headed and logical way. Making things worse he then double-downed on the decision by awarding a blatantly unnecessarily large contract.

Terrible hire, terrible rationale, and the process through which this all came together is cringe-worthy.
