Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

Heard some random radio guys talking about the Browns this morning, saying Flacco and Pickett are locks to make the roster so Shedeur or Gabriel will get cut and whichever one doesn’t get cut will be PS only.

I find that kind of prediction to be completely ridiculous, but I also wouldn’t put it past the Browns to greatly mismanage the position like that.

A lot can happen by the end of the preseason.

I just feel like Flacco is there to be the veteran voice in the room and then why draft two QBs if you just want to roll with Kenny Pickett? The worst scenario for the Browns would be to start Flacco or Pickett and have no clue what Gabriel or Shedeur bring to the table when it comes time to potentially draft a QB next year in a better class.

They have two 1s next year and will have the opportunity to either move up and go big at QB or spend two 1s on building around Shedeur or Gabriel.

The biggest thing, to me, is that it all screams that they don't have a plan, or there are factions within the coaching staff and general management that have different plans.

Feels like it's >90% that however it shakes out, Shedeur's time in Cleveland will be a waste.

I spoke to a guy who was at mini camp yesterday. He thinks they dump Pickett, then the other two end up as back up or PS.
Pickett, if cut is a $2.6 million dollar cap hit. Small by NFL standards.

A lot of the media (same ones who have been hating on Prime since he got to CU) are dismissing Shedeur like a throw away draft choice. It's worth keeping in mind that while Cleveland took Gabriel before him they took him but they did trade picks 166 and 192 to move up to 144 to take him. NFL teams don't give up picks to take somebody they plan on cutting.

I think your guy is probably right. The Browns open it up to Flacco and Pickett to be the veteran "placeholder" with Flacco having the advantage coming in. Should he falter or get hurt then the season openning QB will be Pickett with Flacco either cut ($2.85 million cap hit) or on the injured list.

Browns have been dumb often but they have to know that neither Flacco or Pickett is their future. Flacco is 40 and hasn't been a premier level QB for a decade other than a few short spurts. Pickett is in his 4th year and has clearly proven that his ceiling is mediocre at best. If he wasn't a 1st round pick nobody would look at him as anything more than a body to back up a real QB.

The plan (hope) for the Browns is likely to have their veteran starter then let the rookies develop and see if one of them can become the guy to build around for the future. If that happens they can use the accumulated draft capital plus the cap room they will have to build around the young QB.

Rolling with Pickett would be a Brownsy thing to do. I think Flacco will start the season. Shedeur just needs to learn the playbook and work hard, he'll get his shot. Gabriel, I'm not sold on.

The Browns have some QB capital now. The Saints just lost their presumptive starter (or at least a guy who could be a starter). Their QB room is garbage. Wouldn’t surprise me to see the Saints looking to trade for either Shedeur or one of the other QBs on the Browns roster.

Shedeurs little off hand ball tap before he throws is not good at all. I remember that being the case, but when you watch it in his rookie film, it is worse. How come his QB coach did not fix that, uggghh

Yep. Killed Elway’s career. lol

I agree, though. Not sure how you can’t practice that tap away. I saw an in-depth review that I respected of SS’s college film. There were two problems that repeated themselves: that tap and not anticipating the open receiver—instead, waiting to see the WR get open.

However, Brown’s film from this week included a great anticipation pass down the sidelines that threw the WR open, and I didn’t see a ball tap. (Fix: from a different angle, the ball tap is still there. The Browns’ coaches don’t seem too worried about it.)

The only thing that's factual right now is that we don't know what Cleveland will do and that likely includes Cleveland who have said they don't know who will be their QBs till the process is played out.

Cleveland insider. Of course, another Cleveland beat reporter basically said the exact opposite, I guess.

Multiple reporters seem to think both QBs did very well in day 1. Only two, Brad and Tony Grossi, made a claim who they felt did better. I don't know Brad so I can't tell if he has any bias for Shedeur or against him.

I know for a fact, Tony is a hater and is a liar so I don't take anything he says on Sanders with a grain of salt.

There’s film of plenty of great (HOF) NFL QB’s patting the ball
Most of them for that matter. Brees, Peyton, and Brady. Elway and Marino padded the mess out of the ball. I've never seen a QB evaluated with a more critical eye than Sanders. It's like they are looking for whatever they can find instead of just watching the entire package and comparing what he's doing to others, good or bad.

Why would they trade for Shedeur when they selected a QB in the second round and passed on him multiple times? Carr’s status for this season was always completely up in the air.

Yeah they might trade for Pickett but Shedeur wouldn’t make any sense when they have their own 2nd round QB pick

Because their situation is quite different today than it was on draft day. That was kind of the whole point of my post. Things have changed for them since then.

But it's not, there was very little expectation that Carr would play this year, and zero guarantee he'd ever be effective once healthy.

Why and how? Carr was always a doubt to play this season, not in their future plans and the only reason they didn’t release him Is that they couldn’t afford to.

I think it is entirely possible that Shedeur gets traded to a needy team later this year for, let’s say, a third round pick. Cleveland would have effectively converted a fifth to a third.

I don’t see the Saints as a likely destination for the same point others have made. They drafted their young QB and would be more likely to pick up someone with actual game experience like Pickett until the youngster is ready.

I was about to mention that Elway did that.

Elway could throw a ball through a DB’s eyehole
His release was quicker and his spin was outrageous.

It is not a massive weakness, but it is a flaw that could have been fixed. Nick Wright and Cowherd spoke about people not willing to tell Prime and Shedeur the truth. Prime knows everyone, feels like he knew something was up, he had a concern on his face all draft night.

I want him to prove he can be a big time starter

Does that explain Brady, Brees, and Payton Manning?
