i've been thinking about who'd be a good fit for the next HC, With the caveat that it's a realistic choice.

what about Cabral? He's a helluva coach, good recruiter and with his 20 years at CU HE's seen it done right (Mac) wrong ( Hawk) and everything in between. He bleeds black and gold and would be a guy that former lettermen would be behind 100%. He would not be expensive and he has tons of coaching connections.
 
wasn't /isn't his downfall that he's not a 'charasmatic' guy ?
when he was interim HC when GB was put on leave I don't remember
too many folks wanting him on a permanent basis...
I'm not saying I believe this... it's just what I remember from then-
 
I love him, but just not sure about the recruiting with him.

I would rather keep him at LB'ers or DC, and get somebody like Charlie Strong in here that knows great talent and has been around dominant football.

Charlie Strong aint coming folks. Better chance of landing Shanny, which is a ****ing pipe dream.

Cabral is very accomplished recruiter. He's not charismatic per se in the Pete Carrol way, but he's an engaging dude.

I can't envision a way we go after a big name coach, we have no money.

I agree about the money. CU may be able to scrape up enough to buyout Hawkins but he is one of the lowest paid Big 12 coaches. The new coach will need to be paid bigger dollars and CU is not going to pony it up.
 
I'm fairly certain that a guy like Cabral has to want to stay doing what he's doing to not move onto a DC or HC position elsewhere by now. He seems like the type that wants to be a position coach because of the daily interaction with the players that you don't get at a coordinator or head coach. I'm totally guessing, though.
 
Just remembered. Didn't Cabral get offered the Northern Colorado HC job and he turned it down? IMHO that would have been the perfect starting point for him.

I agree with this, but he's also never been offered the CU job. Anyway, just food for though as I can't handle talking more about all of our issues

Love Cabral but he is not cut out for it nor would he take on such a high profile position. Not Cabral.

Hank was interim after GB was fired following the CCG. Hank coached the bowl game.

Cabral was interim HC when GB was put on administrative leave following the "and she's a girl" debacle.

He could end up being the HC probably for affordability reasons. I think he could parle that into a nice contract a two three years down the road.
 
I'd love to see our next Head Coach retain Cabral and promote him to Defensive Coordinator. He's ready for that and it would allow us to move Jashon Sykes onto the staff as our LB position coach. Jashon has also paid his dues and is ready. Plus, with the administrative experience Jashon has been getting, he's definitely a guy that could become recruiting coordinator in a couple years.

Disagree, we have the money for a "hot" coordinator
 
I really like Cabral but there's a part of me that thinks it's time to wipe the slate clean and start fresh. We, the buff nation, have a strong affinity for the fantasy that our heroes of the past will become our coaching hero's of the future. In football coaching the vast majority of the time it doesn't work out that way. I'm now starting to think that our fondness for past hero's is, in part, hindering our program from getting back to the success level we all want. Because of this I'm leaning toward getting rid of all the coaches (yes, Cabral and Hagan too) and giving whomever gets the job next a totally free hand. We need to not let nostalgia get in the way of us getting the right coaching staff in our program to lead us back to success. Heroes of the past are great but we need winners today.

Totally agree!!

What we need is a good assistant from a big time program, that is ready to take the next step. We are in a very similar situation with the program right now than when Fairbanks was here, what did we do then? We hired a big time assistant froma big time school and he turns out to be the best coach in CU history. We need someone who has been mentored by a true college head coach.

Bob Stoops and Bo Pelini were "hot" coordinators from big time programs.

Lets go get a hungry coordinator!

My secod choice for type of coach would be a former NFL coach like Shannahan (who I still think would coach the buffs at least for a little while, because I know family friends of his), or a Jon Gruden.

You're not really trying to compare Stoops and Pelini, are you? 'Leash, brotha, you need to let go of your man crush on Bo. The guy just lost at home to ISU!

No, not comparing, but he is a good coach. They are playing awesome D, they get a good OC and they will be dangerous.

And I failed to mention that taking that route would make him no less deserving of the job. Im not sure why he has not become a HC along the same lines of why Norm Chow hasn't. Who knows.

Coach Cabral is a case where it has worked out that way. He's consistantly coached up talent and produced some of the best linebackers in the nation. Does anybody else have his record with Butkus Award finalists and recipients?

Additionally, his linebacker corps is consistantly the strong point of CU's teams. He recruits great linebackers AND he's hugely respected in Hawaii (summer camps) and brings us recruits from the islands that wouldn't consider CU otherwise.

This man is not hindering our program. It's a case where our Buff Fantasy of legacy players making great coaches equals the reality.

This isn't nostalgia, but rather proven performance.

Any coach worth his salt who would come to CU knows of Cabral and would love to have him on the staff. If Cabral is content to be the LB coach (which he seems to be) then you keep him. Who is better out there at coaching LBs? Any coach coming in that would want to replace him would not have a better coach, but a 'freind' to put in the place of Cabral-- and we see what happens there. Would be thinking any coach coming in would be thrilled to have someone with his creditials at that coaching position. And Cabral, to his credit, falls in line with the company line, and does not make waves with the HC, and is not going to bail at the first offer that comes his way.
 
The only college LB coach I can think of whose resume might be better than Cabral's is Ron Vanderlinden. He was a defensive assistant at CU from '83-'91 where he coached a lot of great linebackers while winning a national championship. He then went to Northwestern where as DC he coached LB Pat Fitzgerald, the only 2-time Bednarik winner. After a stint as Maryland Head Coach, he's been coaching the LBs at Penn State and had 2 Bednarik winners (Posluszny & Connor) plus Puz also won the Butkus.

Actually, there's a guy I'd like to see back in Boulder. Maybe not as Head Coach since he went 15-29 at Maryland, but he'd be a great Defensive Coordinator for us. He's still only 53 years old.
 
15-29 eh? Probably an improvement over Hawk assuming he does what we're all expecting for the remainder of the season.
