The Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has just released their All-American teams, and BIG congrats are in order for junior outside hitter Alexa Smith being named a 2nd Team All-American and setter Brynna DeLuzio, as a freshman, Honorable Mention.

Congrats to both!

Ms. Smith joins 1st Team All-American Taylor Simpson (from 2014) as the only Buffs ever named to the 1st or 2nd Teams by the AVCA. Per http://static.cubuffs.com/custompages/volleyball/2017_Info_Guide/82-85_honors.pdf , Kelly Campbell was also named 2nd Team back in 1999, but by Volleyball Magazine.

From the AVCA article it appears in 2006, CU's Ashley Nu'u was also a 3rd team All American in 2006. On November 11, 2006, the Buffs beat #1 ranked Nebraska. That was the Nebraska team that went on to win the national championship with one loss--to CU.

Alexa Smith, Colorado, OH, Jr.
Stats: 3.97 K/S, .241 Hitting %, 2.83 D/S
Third All-American in program history (2014: Taylor Simpson, 2006: Ashley Nu’u)…Now every Pac-12 program has no fewer than three All-Americans in their respective histories.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — For the first time in CU history, the Buffaloes have placed a pair of athletes on the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Division I All-America teams. Junior outside hitter Alexa Smith was named to the second team, while freshman setter Brynna DeLuzio earned honorable mention status.

"We are very excited and proud of Lex's selection," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "Lex had an amazing year this past season and has grown into one of the premier 6-rotation players in the country.

"We are also very excited for Brynna," Mahoney went on to say. "This program has a history of elite setters and Brynna had the type of freshman season as good as any on that list. We look forward to her continued development."

Smith is the first Buff to earn second team honors from the AVCA and is just the third Buff in CU history to earn AVCA first, second or third team honors. Taylor Simpson earned first team honors in 2014 and Ashley Nu'u was a third team selection in 2006. Three other Buffs have earned AVCA honorable mention status: Alexis Austin (2015), Allie Griffin (2004 and 05) and Monique Gerlach (2003). DeLuzio is the second CU freshman to earn any type of All-America honor. Kelly Campbell, another setter, was named to the Volleyball Magazine Freshman All-America team in 1996.

One thing I find interesting about this award .... Brynna did not win PAC 12 Freshman of the Year. That went to another freshman setter .... Kylee Mclaughlin of OSU. So in the eyes of whoever made that selection, Kylee was the better freshman setter.
Both Brynna and Kylee were the freshman of the year for their respective regions (CU is in Pacific South or something like that and OSU is in Pacific North). These regional selections are the primary players that are looked at by the AVCA All-American committee. So in the All-American committee's eyes Brynna was the better player as she got honorable mention All-American but Kylee did not.

I think I may have to look into this volleyball thing a little closer. Do we have a beach team yet?
