Colorado RPI Watch

Texas Southern won at Alabama State, 70-50. This was their 10th straight win. Now 15-14 (14-2). What an excellent job Mike Davis has done, this was a team that started the year 1-13, and here they are with a winning record. Unbelievable. A shame they aren't eligible for the NCAA Tournament.

I'll take every bit of an RPI boost we can get.

Good night for us. I was worried about both games.

Yep, couldn't have worked out better, actually. Add in Texas Southern completing their surge to go from 1-13 to 15-14, and we're in business. Desperately need to keep our RPI as high as possible, every little bit helps

Tuesday night the only game we care about is Wyoming at Air Force.

Probably should cheer for AFA since a home loss would hurt their RPI more than a road loss would hurt Wyoming. We just need them both to stay in the Top 100.

The calls they got late were ridiculous. I'm actually pissed right now. I ****ing hate Kansas

Yeah, I know ISU losing helps CU but still I can't help but be incredibly pissed off about it. Living in Kansas most of my life has helped develop an unnatural hatred for everything KU though.

I hope we never play them again after next year

I hope we play them on a regular basis, and I hope we beat them.

Hating is okay. Fear is not.

Not afraid of them. Just don't think it benefits us playing 5 against 8. I also would rather not see a bunch of KU jackasses doing the rock chalk chant at Coors. Hope that isn't the case, but I know that there is still a huge KU alumni base in Denver that would love nothing more to fill the Keg if only for one night. And we're still building our program up. I'm in the vast minority but if we HAD to play KU, would have much rather it had been 2-3 years down the line

To me, getting rid of playing KU in basketball was my favorite part of joining the Pac-12. Didn't have anything to do with fear, just annoyance.

In theory I wouldn't mind beating KU next season and then not seeing them again for a long time, either. However, I think you're overestimating how many fans they'll have at the Keg. Sure, some will infiltrate, especially if season tix are kept dirt cheap. But the days of KU having almost 50% of the fans are gone. It's going to be a hostile environment and immense home court advantage. Second, the RPI benefits of playing KU are fantastic. We're enjoying that benefit right now, even after we got our doors blown off at Phog. We need to keep gaming the RPI system, and playing KU certainly helps in a big, big way for obvious reasons. Highly unlikely that we'll be getting Kentucky or North Carolina to visit anytime soon (and in the case of Duke or Carolina, the officiating bias would be even worse). KU is one powerhouse we can get to visit OOC. Might as well go with it.

Don't be so sure we couldn't get something going with Kentucky. Calipari's first college job was as an assistant at KU during Tad's years there (under both head coaches - Owens and Brown). The bigger question is whether they'd want to schedule each other. Boyle and Turgeon seem to want to avoid playing each other and it's not like we've heard any talk of putting SMU (Larry Brown) or Tulsa (Danny Manning) on the schedule.

Kentucky is a fan base that just might take over the Keg if we weren't careful. Those guys are unreal. Took over Texas A&M a few weeks ago, and this is UK's idea of a nightmare season. Haven't taken the time to analyze Calipari's scheduling preferences, but off the top of my head, they basically often do a high profile preseason tournament (Maui especially), another high profile neutral site game or two (for instance, Duke and Maryland), of course they do their rivalry with Louisville. They play North Carolina and Notre Dame fairly frequently too. Their series with Indiana has collapsed. Seems like they've usually got a lot of high-profile games and seemingly not a lot of wiggle room, but they did play Baylor at home this year, so they do take on at least one power conference "random" in home/home series, it appears.

Then there's Duke, who didn't play one single OOC away game this year.

Carolina will travel more than you'd think, and not just for the powerhouse games like @ Indiana. For instance, they went to Long Beach State this year, got the return trip from UNLV this year (visited out there last season), played at Texas.

I'm perfectly content avoiding Turgeon at this point. We've been sufficiently owned.

Not trying to say that 50% will be KU fans. But it will be a sizable contention, most likely. I hope I'm wrong and it's 95% CU fans.

I do agree that the RPI benefits are good, and the exposure to a hostile crowd is also good and in theory, gets us ready for other tough venues in the Pac-12. Still, Kansas isn't playing us because they think we're a good up and coming program. They're playing us as a favor to the KU alumni in the Denver area

Again, probably in the minority but I think KU benefits more from playing us then we do from playing them, at least at this time. I would rather schedule a home and home with a team like New Mexico, then I would extend our KU series. That would also be a RPI boost, although not quite to the same extent that KU is. There's other teams, especially at the mid-major level that would provide a boost in RPI, assuming there was a mutual interest to play.

Even North Carolina, has the obvious KU connection and might be open to playing CU in the future.

About 6 years ago we had a home-and-home football series scheduled with UNC and they canceled it, but Bohn offered to waive their cancellation fee if they agreed to schedule a home-and-home basketball series with us and they declined. So if that's any indication then UNC wouldn't have any interest in scheduling us.

Six years ago, we didn't have a KU graduate coaching our team though. Not saying they would want to play us for sure, but I think it at least increases the odds of it happening. Maybe that doesn't matter much, as Williams came to KU after Boyle had graduated... and has now been at NC for about ten years

I guess I don't see why we have to play a blue blood type program every year, anyways. Even if we can't draw North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky... can still have games against other talented programs that would also boost our RPI

And man, I watch a bit of North Carolina, and maybe I'm such a hater against KU... but can't say I've seen North Carolina get as much help as KU has this season. I might feel differently if I lived in Tobacco Road though

I'm sure we can get CVille to weigh in on that one. :wink2:

Regarding hate for KU, I completely understand where you're coming from. I still hate KU but when I moved to this region my hatred for UNC surpassed them to the point that I pulled for KU when these teams played each other twice in the NCAA tournament in recent years.

North Carolina invented 5 on 8. Your point made me chuckle though, because just last night I was hearing Virginia fans say "KU gets calls, but it's nothing like what we experience with UNC and Duke"...the term "Carolina refs" carries weight. Karl Hess has terrorized this region for years.

I wouldn't mind if they scheduled games with upper-tier b1g teams. Might not be ready just yet for a clash with MichSt, but Wiscy or meatchicken would be a worthwhile game.

I would like to see us schedule the big 10 in more than just basketball. But on this topic I agree michigan, wisky, maybe OSU depending on the year, would all be a lot of fun I would think.

I'd love to see some big 10 teams too. The ladies played Illinois this year, that would be an awesome team to schedule. Minny would be good because the travel doesn't seem too difficult.

I think Tad is going to bring a great balance to our scheduling. So happy those Ricardo extra frosty cupcakes are gone.

Tad gets it. Ricardo never quite understood that people will buy season tickets and go to a Wofford game as long as that Wofford game isn't the highlight of the non-conference schedule.

I think it was a one time thing but didn't CSU go to Durham a few years back? I think they played them in the tourney too. Could be wrong tho.

They played in Durham last year and also played Duke in the tourney in 2003 I think it was. They year CSU won the MWC tourney.

Oh ok, I thought I watched those. I'd love to see CU take on anybody. Win or lose, there are some benefits to playing the big boys. Alot of good programs out there that would be nice to get on the schedule that aren't UK, Duke, or UNC tho.

I like this idea, if for no other reason than style of play. They play a different brand of basketball in the Midwest and it would be good to get a taste of that before getting a surprise come tournament time.

If we're talking non-conference power scheduling, I'd be looking at the basketball-only schools that are breaking off from the Big East. They're going to be scrambling to fill schedules. Home & homes with programs like Marquette wouldn't suck at all.

Yep, that's definitely an opportunity. I'd throw in Memphis as well. They tend to do a big preseason tournament, and they play Tennessee most years, but as this season shows, they could certainly use another quality power conference opponent.
