This season is so reminiscent of 2001....

Fresno State early loss puts us behind the pack of ranked teams and ultimately kept us out......

If we had beaten Michigan, we are in this thing 100%!

DAMN!!!!

I watched that Fresno game in Christchurch New Zealand at like 7 am.... a bar opened for a group of us traveling...... lucky that we all flew home Sept 5th and didn't stay an extra week....

oh yea... we beat Washington State BOTH YEARS!!!!

Sorry not seeing it. I feel like we finally stepped out of a horrid alternate reality. I did not feel that then.
But I loved that team too so that is similar!

Difference is we should've gone to the NC game instead of ****ing Nebraska...but yeah...this season is very reminiscent...especially both seasons represented a big turnaround from the prior season.

Should have beaten SC, huge opportunity lost there. Michigan was understandable with Sefo out 2/3 into the game. It's still been a dream of a season compared to the last 15 years.

oh wait..... a team that didn't win their conference went on to play the national title!

BOOM

I see the comparison, but I don't know if I can buy it myself. We did go 3-8 IIRC in 2000. If you remember that team better than I do, correct me, but I remember it being a down year with a very young team that just couldn't finish. That team also played a nutty OOC. Going into 2001, the expectations were higher than this year. Again, correct me if you remember better, but I remember thinking it was a team that was probably going bowling.

Compare it with this year-we all are homers, but nobody on here thought we'd be talking about a potential Rose Bowl or Playoff appearance and a game Friday night in August. Regardless of what happens Friday night, IMO this team is one of the greatest turnaround stories in the history of this sport......not just this program. We were watching probably the worst team in the P5 not too long ago, and this program had the longest bowl drought in D1 before this year IIRC. To have a pretty good shot at ending it with a Rose Bowl appearance is just incredible.

There is a correlation - the 2000 and 2015 teams had not learned how to win. They both were painfully close in multiple games. The 2001 and 2016 teams finally crested that "winning" hill.

I see differences as well, but primarily in the schedule played and preseason expectations.

What are you talking about?

In 2001, the Washington State game was canceled due to 9/11. Not playing them (assuming we would've won) would've guaranteed that we make the national championship game, as Washington State finished #10 that season. That quality win would've crushed the margin of .02 in the BCS ranking that we fell short of the national championship game that season.

That game that never happened (until rescheduled in a future year) was easily forgotten by many, but whenever I think of the 2001 season, I know what kind of difference that game could've made and I just get frustrated.

Not really all that similar other than the record.

No kidding. FSU vs UM is no comparison. CU should never lost at home to a WAC team. UM is still the #5 team in the country and it was on the road.

2001 was full of games that CU got the breaks and won in some wild fashion. 2016 wins were just CU being the better team and imposing their will. This year was a more dominant perormance by CU.

I thought it was rescheduled.... I knew we were supposed to play them... I thought it was moved.... guess not.

Fun fact: there was an otherwise meaningless game in 2001 between TCU and Southern Miss, which TCU won in close fashion. TCU had lost a close game to Nebraska early in the 2001 season. Had Southern Miss beaten TCU, it would have reduced Nebraska's SOS enough to move CU past them.

Why is that fun?

Come on, there are definite similarities.

- 10-2 record
- RTD vs The Rise (both coming off BAD seasons in the prior year)
- Losing an early OOC game
- Losing a mid season conference game to one of the top teams in the conference
- Getting an early season conference marquee win (KSU in '01 vs Oregon in '16)
- Beating a ranked team on Thanksgiving week to clinch the South
- Playing a top 5 and heavy favorite in P12 CG
- If we win, probably just barely miss out on the Playoff

The teams are not similar, the style of play is not similar, the opponents are not similar, but there are parallels that can easily be drawn. No need to be a contrarian just because phillybuff has been an unabashed Michigan fan boy the past week.

The seasons played out quite differently. This team has played the favorite for the last month, something the 2001 team never had to deal with, especially as it pertained to Nebraska. I say this to highlight just how good this team has been in 2016.

more than the last month. I'm pretty sure the last game this team wasn't favored in was against USC. Has not been favored in only three games: Michigan, USC, and now Utah.

You're correct. 2001 and 2016 are not the same years.

JFC, DBT. In terms of parallels, the 2001 Nebraska game was the 2016 Utah game. We played Texas in the Big 12 Championship game in 2001 and won 39-37. We play Washington in the Pac 12 Championship in 2016 and will win 39-37.
Another uncomfortable moment where I liked a Schek post. He won me over with both his frustration and his opening of "JFC, DBT..."
