Official CU Head Coach Search Thread - Primetime

Talk of making Sanford HC because of his enthusiasm and Go Buffs spirit, reminds me of Chev support. Offense, and the team when they were OC, sucked under each of them..

They probably supply RG with a list of candidates. I'd assume that Sarkisian was on that list. It's not their fault if we decide to hire the worst of their potential candidates.
A search firm needs to do a lot more than that. They need to lay the groundwork for the candidate pool and pare it down to ensure you’re not barking up a lot of trees. They need to present 2-4 candidates who they realistically believe would be amenable to taking the job if offered.

Dear lord do we have to keep talking about this? Is there a scenario where he gets the job? Sure. Is that scenario likely? No-its not. Let him be a backburner candidate, and one we stop talking about once this team loses a couple times under him.

A reporter asked RG if he would use a search firm during his presser when Tucker left. I specifically remember him saying he would not and that he knew what he was looking for. He either lied, or just simply is using a firm again.

I’m glad we can get back to panicking, it’s our natural state of being. Optimism feels uncomfortable for some reason.
Lol they've placed many good people in many positions and they've placed some bad people as well. It's like the manhattan argument that RG can't possibly hire a good coach now because he hired KD most recently. Well, he also hired Mel Tucker, though this search firm, so which is it?

The search firm isn't making the selection. They are just the intermediary. They can also be helpful at getting background information on potential candidates and field recommendations from other coaches / AD's. They probably have a binder full of coaches that they can call on.

Search firm is in Plano, TX. Dorrell was in Boulder. So no, the search firm wasn't used for him.

Being facetious, but it did seem that RG panicked and took who was in his backyard. MT does seem like somebody that a search firm would help find.

The article that I posted a while back that gave an account for KD's hire said that RG and LC were staring at a wall in RG's office, when RG asked, "What about Karl Dorrell?" Then they hired him like the next day. Made no mention of a search firm.

A search firm is only as good as the criteria you provide them and your preferences which you want to move on from among the candidates they identify.
There is no chance Karl Dorrell was on a list this firm gave to RG. Also, by RG's own admission, KD's name came up from Lance Carl, and he shared an agent with Bienemy. If this search firm was used in any capacity, I imagine it was to work with KD's agent and the Dolphins to get him that AHC title right before he accepted the CUHC job.

Check their “recent placements”.

I’ll spoil it for you - they placed KD at Colorado.

John Calipari also has a quote on there, maybe we should use a bigger scope for their history?

The article I linked suggests that KD received the Dolphins promotion shortly before his name came up in RG's office. I wonder if that is what actually put him on the radar.

I just don't believe he just happened to be given a title promotion right before he was hired away to CU.

I think it was asked of the Dolphins in order for RG to be able to spin it as "oh hey look he's also an NFL team's AHC". That's my theory at least.

Were they staring at a wall or at a painting?

I think this is likely what happened.

1. Eastman & Beaudine helped place MT.

2. RG felt burned when MT left and thought to himself, "No way am I using them again. I'll do it myself this time."

3. RG made the worst hire in the world.

4. RG thinks to himself, "I made the worst hire in the world. I'll use Eastman & Beaudine this time around."

Doesn't explain, however, how a picture of KD showed up on their website.

You don’t understand - we need something to freak out about, it makes us feel safe and in our element. Even if that firm placed every elite coach in the country, that picture of KD was all we needed to reaffirm that things are going to be ****ty forever.

Scenario 1: RG wanted to hire KD, but knew it was a reach. So they have KD's agent reach out to Flores to promote him so the hire doesn't look as bad. Flores agrees and promotes KD.

Scenario 2: RG was desperate. Had no candidates, and couldn't think of any. LC and RG are watching ESPN News in RG's office when it KD's promotion comes across the ticker. "Why haven't we considered Karl Dorrell?"

Maybe it's just me, but Scenario 2 seems much more likely.

Scenario 2 is unlikely, because Karl Dorrell being promoted to the Dolphins' AHC would never have made ESPN News' ticker
