22-23 Transfer Portal and General Recruiting Catch-All Thread

Just not a member of the Junta, huh? No cocaine and strippers for you!

There's the 2022 Transfer Portal thread, the 2023 transfer portal thead, and the Transfer Portal news thread I believe. I don't see the purpose of having three of them that are discussing the same things.

My proposal is to use this thread here in the main forum as a general portal and recruiting thread as it essentially comes down to the same thing. For detailed discussions about specific players, we have their individual profiles, but we use this as a one stop shop for all roster related discussion.

The trenches are always hardest, whether prep recruiting, JUCO recruiting or hitting the transfer market. (Fwiw, when I'm looking at teams I think can be great in the preseason, I generally look for a dominant DL as the big separator.)

It will take 3 years to get it where we want, but that doesn't mean we can't significantly upgrade in one offseason. There are veteran players available and recruits who are good enough to play early.

We have really hit a new level of impatience in the past day. lol

Give me my new players. Now! Portal just "opened," but I want my commits!!! Give me.

I hear my animal brain going off. This is NOT something I expected from this new coach hire, until this weekend. Just wow. This is what happens when a body has been starved for so long.

The toughest part about relying is on the portal is I think in general there are a lot fewer quality OL and DL that can play that hit the portal, and those guys are coveted by everybody. I think we'll be able to bring in a lot of upgrades for offensive skill players and the secondary, but I think USC's performance this year showed its a lot tougher to bring in enough quality numbers on the lines, that was their weakest areas this year. Even if you pull highly rated high school guys, most need at least a couple off years to learn technique and build college bodies.
True, but the bar isn't bringing in great OL, just P5 quality OL.

He's going to be really good with a chance to win the Heisman. I compare him to Bailey Zappe with a worse deep ball and better legs with a pre snap read as good as Jake Fromm out of Georgia. He's a very accurate and smart QB. He's constantly getting better. Pocket QB. Reader of the game.

He can play but he isn't quite a NFL prospect yet. He's close. That deep ball has to improve and obviously you want to see his style of QB against better competition. If he was a freak athletic with great size, I wouldn't care but he's a cerebral QB who's precision based. I definitely think he could be a 1st round pick in time. I would like to see him behind a much better OL. JSU OL is not good at all. It's bad. Decent in the SWAC and good in some games but overall, most of these kids aren't talented on the OL.

If I had to compare him to Cam Ward. I would say when Cam left UIW, he was more talented, a lot less polished. Even Lindsey Scott Jr who replaced Ward put up superior numbers with far less natural talent than Ward. Sanders is talented but not overly talented. He's overly smart and extremely accurate. Does not miss many throws and you don't see as many spectacular catches because his balls are on target. You do see him some WR drops though. Shedeur is always improving. I'll say that as well. His mobility is miles better this year, than last year.

I'll say he's better than Ward when Ward came out but he's not as talented as Ward. I saw a lot of Ward at UIW. I also saw a number of Scott Jr games at UIW. Who you have around Sanders will matter even more than Ward because Sanders is not as talented.
Awesome response. Thanks! In the one game I watched, he just looked like he knew he was so much better (playing pick up football in grade school, but the QB is a Sophomore).

Anyone else surprised we haven’t had more commits yet? Getting greedy here
Not really, especially if the reports about him bringing 10 guys from JSU over are true since presumably they are all going to play in the Bowl game Coach Prime coaches, so I don’t think they can even enter the portal until after that game.

There’s only so many spots available, and kids in the portal should be listening to every school that is interested in them and not rush such a major decision.

That's where Prime's friends (Hi, Dave Portnoy) come in handy.
Was waiting for someone to say this. I would be surprised if there wasn’t some discussion between Portnoy/barstool and Prime about how they can leverage this for both sides (and possibly it’s already happened), which I think would be huge to have barstool media backing as far as promoting the brand AND potential NIL money (hadn’t thought about that). Not sure know how many people on this board know that Prime worked at barstool and has a good relationship with the CFB guys (Portnoy and Big Cat). Barstool has been really trying to build its CFB brand and Dave tweeting about CU (Big Cat too) / immediately announcing they would be doing their gameday in Boulder for Nebraska game could be a coincidence or them looking at CU and Prime as a potential partner to help grow their CFB brand. CU welcomed the pardon my take guys (Big Cat and PFT) over the summer for their grit week tour (they are partners with Coors) and PFT was kicking for the team at practice… like everything happening now, this seems like the stars aligning and makes too much sense…

noooot a fan of Portnoy/Barstool but I can compartmentalize that for the sake of CU Football, as it's becoming a necessary evil since they are a growing into a dominant player in the media space

While I get that OL recruiting from the portal is hard, I think everyone is forgetting one thing - Coach Prime is gonna be going to these guys and saying “I’m trying to get my son to the NFL. You’re a key part of that. And if I get him there, what makes you think you won’t be going there too?”

Yeah, understandable. Not the biggest fan of barstool myself and the administration might scoff at the idea and association, but if true they gave Prime full control to save our program on life support, then it’s not up to them and would seem crazy to turn our nose up. Portnoy can be obnoxious but their CFB personalities (Big Cat being one) are some of the better ones imo.

The AD’s job is to clear the road so Prime can work. He’s coming.
