He said the same thing in his daily chat with 365 yesterday. Doubt you are.
He is, however he did make me laugh yesterday when one of his tweets dug into Clownzano exposing him as the PAC shill that he is.
ego (feeling butthurt) is not exactly the best factor to use in the decision making process. I am glad CU understands that.
Not our problem if Utah can't get past the total misconception that the Big 12 is a LESSER conference.
If you look at facts, the Big 12 is superior in people watching and supporting football. The only thing the Pac-12 did better than the Big 12 is slogans. We called ourselves the "Conference of Champions." Sounds great, but itsnt really factual.
The Big 12 has the Pac-? beat in almost everything else... (except that fancy slogan.... and I like the Pac logo better.... and CU has the best unis in the country.... but we are leaving for the Big 12.... so the PAC ? can't even claim that they have the best unis anymore)

Paraphrasing Wilner's best spin: "It's a sh!t deal on both distribution and revenue, but maybe, potentially, hopefully it positions the Pac for the next round by being the first mover and a legacy partner for Apple's streaming service." That's all he's got.
Doubt it... MLS is 12.99 a month so Pac12 would probably be similar or slightly less.
Couple other thoughts:
MLS is running a 50% off plan now for the rest of the season. Does Pac12 do that too and how would it affect the milestones.
How many Pac12 fans will ONLY subscribe for football/basketball season and then end it. No one is going to pay money to watch football reruns in the middle of June.
Pac leadership from the Bay Area is still convinced that there's a big untapped dollar in sports fans that want to see elite college swimming & diving.

I never liked going to the PAC12 mostly because I felt the West Coast Schools were not as passionate about football as the Big 12 fans were. But the Big 12 we return to is not the Big 12 that we left. Of course, after next year the PAC12 will not be the conference that we went to play. I took no pleasure in the failure of the PAC12 nor in the struggles of CU football.
I believe the biggest problem the PAC had was the creation of the Pac12 network. This basically thumbed their nose at the traditional media partners, relegated the PAC to limited exposure, and continues to be an albatross in the present media negotiations.
I do not believe there will be another round of conference realignment in decade, at least not as people presently view it. I believe that is going to fracture into about 40 teams vying for the top TV dollars and then about 50 teams fighting the next tier. Conferences are no longer going to be relevant in Football. Too much money and too much dead weight. How long does Ohio State and Michigan want to carry Rutgers and Maryland. That is why I don't understand the fixation on adding G5 teams, they are no longer value additive. SDSU or Fresno State or Boise are not going to move the needle much in role of adding subscribers.
I think that carriage fee programing(some want to call it linear) is going to level off at ~50-60 million subscribers. People "cut the cord" by dropping cable but they then go to something like YoutubeTV or Sling which still pays a carriage fee. Which is the case of ESPN is going to be ~$600 Million per month without advertising. Now the media companies need to figure out the direct to consumer piece. I think eventually ESPN+ type service is going to fall into the $25 per month range with add-on to watch specialized programming like MLB. After they figure the financial part out they can figure out the rights fees, but the fees are going to be associated more fan engagement - Okie State may be more valuable than Cal because they draw more fan engagement (subscribers).

Are these people under the impression that being the first to stream = equity in AAPL?
You’re taking all of the risk with 0 adjusted returns. Actually less return in short term and no equity upside if it pays off.
As a former swimmer I LOVE watching elite swimmers compete, it absolutely fascinates me. I used to swim against Mark Dylla who was crazy fast in HS and never sniffed the US Nat'l team. Watching the times these people put up is crazy and fun to see.
HOWEVER, I would NEVER pay $0.01 to watch it (unless my kid was competing), especially not when the SEC and B1G meets are routinely on "linear" TV and NBC broadcasts most national meets.

There was growin animosity in football with Utah. There was a brief little back in forth with UA in MBB, but nothing really sustained.
I can proudly say that one of my sons (who went on to swim for an SEC school) took down 2 of Dylla's high school pool records (200 and 500 free).

And that is where the second tier or teams come into play. You are going to see more "appearance fees". Does Ohio State vs CAL draw more fan engagement than Ohio State vs Kansas - probably not because Ohio State is the draw no who they are playing when it is a lower tier.

The fact is that P12 football programs do not generate fans or viewers at the rate those other three conferences do. I think we all know why that's the case. Even had the P12 done everything right from a network and marketing perspective, the conference's footprint was still going to be dominated by West Coast and Mountain urban areas that are more transient than what you will find in the Midwest and South. Beyond that, those P12 areas are just less interested in CFB than other parts of the country--which is also why you'll find only 3 BCS programs east of the Hudson River, where 20+ million people live.

I think its pretty clear the folks running these institutions are academics and not business people. The debacle that was their attempt to start a media company is evidence of that, as is the rampant out of control costs for higher ed since they've have an unlimited flow of student loan money.
