It was only a matter of time...

I personally hate smoking pot but I don't really have a problem with kids getting high, especially in the offseason. Pot is not bad for you and it doesn't generally make people violent. Who cares? Just don't be an idiot and actually manage to get busted for smoking in your dorm room.

Getting in trouble in a CU dorm requires either terrible luck or extreme stupidity. The overwhelming majority of the time it is the latter. When I lived in Chey-ho it was an absolute joke... the RAs didn't care unless you literally gave them no choice but to write you up.

Not my experience in Kitt. The RA's patrolled our floor every 30 minutes, and they would say things like 'we smelled beer outside your room' even when we weren't drinking. It gave them an excuse to come in and look around. I was written up 5 times, got out of 4 of them, and every room on my floor was written up at least once.

Right or wrong when you get "busted" as an "athlete" and are in the paper or internet the coach has to deal with it. lets see what Hawkins does, in todays P.C. world who knows. Back in the day they hid the kids mistakes and they ran the bleachers and cleaned the crappers for a week. Today people want blood.

We should kick him off the team because you can't have good athletes who smoke dope. Just look at Michael Phelps! Er, I mean Tim Lincecum... er... nevermind

you can drink beer or Jack or vodka and be or punch some jerkoff in the face, but a little whiff in your bloodstream makes you a criminal.

in ten years marijuana will be legal.

If the RA entered his room and found a pound of pot and CE was setup for distribution than kick him off the team. The fact that he was caught with a pipe and the equivalent of 2 joints does not sound like Clark is out of control. Hell, Denver has more MM "pharmacies" than Starbucks.

Would we people be yelling to kick him off the team if the RA entered his room and found a 12 pack of beer.

The people that want say CU is soft, undiciplined, whatever, and use Clark getting busted with a joint as proof are way, way out of touch with what is really wrong with this team.

Clark should be punished, but when his crime is considered minor under Boulder law and CU judicial affairs, kicking him off the team does not match up with the severity of the crime.

I'd bet a three game suspension, something like that. Also, remember, Hawkins has a "three strikes and your are out" policy. He's been pretty unflexible on that particular rule so far.

When I attended CU back in the late 70's, I never went to a party where you didn't smell pot. I can absolutely guarantee you that about 80% of the students took a toke once in awhile. The whole pot thing is a witch hunt - pure bull $h!t !

I want them both gone. Barnett got it half right when he suspended guys for the Fiesta Bowl... Too bad for him and us, that it later came out that those same guys got in other trouble that night.

According to CU's policy, Evans gets caught one more time with weed and he is kicked out of school. I suspect the RAs will be watching him a bit closer from now on. What a waste but if that is his thing, I am sure another kid will be greatful to get his free ride.

Lots of high and mighty folks in this thread... the kid smoked a little dope. Big deal, he 's in college, he's young. No need to kick him off the team.

Folks are entitled to their opinion on pot. I disagree with it, but I also understand that it does not necessarily put the team in a good light with the public at large. I tend to look at it in much the same way as a MIP. A mistake, but not worthy of getting the boot by itself.

Here's the problem with these incidents as I see it: Hawkins and the administration put themselves out there front and center as "doing it the right way". It is the public reasoning for why Hawkins kept his job. One of the reasons I cringed when I read all those public statements is because I knew it was inevitable some players on the team would get into trouble. It happens with every group of young adults. Are these two guys going to be made examples?

OH NOES doing the POT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you guys freaking kidding me, we've gone from allegations of mass team improprieties, to assualt with a deadly weapon incident and your calling for Hawk's head becuase a 19 year old got caught with a little pot? This incident is so minor CU doesnt even care the first time. Just admit to yourselves that your looking for any reason to blame Hawk for anythign that goes wrong even if it is a non-issue.

I've raised three kids to adulthood. When raising kids, at least for me, you have to, one, expect a screw up here and there and, two, be a little flexible. To say that Clark Evans should be kicked off the team for a pot incident is ludicrous. The ultimate goal of raising, educating, and coaching kids is to help them become better people. Kids are going to make mistakes. When they do, as long as the mistake isn't too egrigious, you have to use it to help them learn and become better and to set an example to the other kids. If Hawkins was so inflexible as to kick a kid off the team for such a, really, minor thing, he'd lose the team because almost every kid would view the punishment as unfair.

Man, I sure could use a joint right now.

I learned it by watching you!

Well, my oldest is 25. I haven't "partaken" in, oh, 35 years. But I'm thinking about starting again because my frigging back is killing me and the vicadin is making me sick!

Be careful, DBT.

Hawks policy is two failed drug tests and you are gone. I guess this is strike one. This happened without publicity to at least one other player in the last three years.

I'm going to call bull**** on that. I was an RA for 2 years. About 99% of the stories I hear from people about RAs are extreme exaggerations. Being an RA was a job and never were they required to patrol the hall every 30 minutes. How many people do you know do 5 times the work required? Stuff like that gets talked about because from time to time they would do their rounds back to back, which is out of the norm but a great way to catch people who thought they could get away with stuff since the RAs just came around.

It is always interesting to read the outside perspective on things though.

You obviously don't know how judicial affairs treats it then. Two strikes with weed and you are out of school. The first time requires alot of community work, I think a class you have to attend, and stuff like that. Why do you think all those students work for dining services for free? I think 10 hours in the dining hall is one of the options if you don't want to do the class or write a paper on drugs.

I am personally shocked to learn that you were an RA. Rules just don't seem to be your thing Tim.

You can call bull**** all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that it was the truth. I should have noted that the 30 minute patrols occurred between 6pm - 12pm.

I know of other dorms that were supposedly less strict, but the the Kittridge - Arnett RA's were nazi's.

18 hours of patrols? Christ! Did your RA ever sleep?

My RA was actually cool, it was the other RAs who patrolled the dorm. Ones from other wings or floors.

But yes - I see your point, jerkoff!

Different halls had different types of RAs. Mine was pretty lax and you had to give him a reason to bust you. As long as you did things that allowed him to look the other way if he could, he'd pretty much let you slide. Visiting other halls, I saw the complete opposite where the RA was out to try and bust kids. I guess I can see it both ways. If you are an RA and some kid dies cause he drank too much vodka on your floor you are gunna feel pretty bad if you'e looking the other way. But then, kids will be kids afterall and you're not going to stop them from drinking anyway.

I tried the dorms for two-or-three weeks at CU before deciding it wasn't a good fit. But after I left I still ate in the chow hall a couple of times (I don't remember what the admissions process was, but I somehow skirted it for free food). One night at dinner, my prior RA came over and sat next to me for the meal. He didn't say a word about my transgression, but I never went back either. He made a pretty effective point in a cool way. Saaaaay, Tim...you're not a tall goofy guy are you? Kittridge?

Really? Isn't Tim the one who drives in the fast lane going the speed limit. That totally sounds like a former RA to me.
