A&M To The SEC Nearly A Done Deal ??

sounds like if the political wrangling to determine a 14th team doesn't produce agreement, the SEC may stalemate expansion, decide to do nothing and vote down ATM.
My take as well. Looks like there are a lot of schools willing to band together to prevent any school from any of their states from joining. Which leaves... Mizzou? Would they stoop?

i think they know they cannot compete in the SEC

Okay, count me as a little puzzled. If the gAggie regents are meeting on Monday to vote on a possible move, wouldn't that indicate that they already have an invitation? Did the $ec commish extend the invite without the go-ahead from the $ec schools? If so, this could be the epic red-face event of the year.

A&M is voting to give the president full authority to decide the athletic affiliation of A&M. Setting it up so that as soon as an invite is received they can jump on it before the Tx legislature can do anything.

Again I say - what is the rush?!? It's not like they're going to do this and suddenly be playing the SEC schedule this fall. They are going to be in the Big 12 until next summer, at the least.

It would be pretty funny if A&M royally screwed the pooch by making such a big fuss without actually having things worked out with the SEC first.

It would be fantastic! Now that we're in the Pac I can laugh at all this drama. If aTm returns to the Big XII after an unsuccessful secession bid--one that inolves both the public humiliation of rejection as well as tough-as-nails contrition--and all of those dysfunctional bastards remain stuck with each other without threatening our good deal? Well that just sounds like heaven to me. Maybe they can bring in Notre Dame and kick out Baylor just to make it that much better?

Think someone posted that that the ACC has a deadline where if a member leaves the conference later than Aug 15th, they will have to wait an additional year to leave. Or something like that. SEC won't take A&M unless the know for sure they will have a 14/16 member conference.

The rush is more on the side of inviting ACC schools. Their date to give notice is August 15th if they want to be in the SEC in 2012.

TAMU needs things to move as quickly as possible to avoid the Texas political machine from spinning up. They deliberately set the meeting on Monday so it occurs BEFORE the special session of the higher ed committee meeting that got set for Tuesday (think the legislature committees have to give 5 days notice of any meetings).

Dennis Dodds just tweeted that it has been confirmed that UT hired a lobbying firm to help them try and block this. The political lengths that people will go to for football issues in Texas truly is something to behold. At the same time, I can see TAMU's point that they should be allowed to seek the best deal for themselves. The LHN is a gamechanger because it IS unfair that UT should be able to keep TAMU in some sort of blood brother death pact while the LHN gives it a perpetual advantage.

That dynamic will just make it more fun if aTm proves unable to slip the Big XII surly bonds...

But that is precisely what ALL of the teams in the remaining Big 12 agreed to!

Didn't Beebe just **** the Texas political pull to keep things together by stating that Houston could be a fill-in for Aggy leaving?

Wouldn't the Texas legislature be more in favor of having Houston fill in the Big 12 spot with ATM now in the SEC. Houston is still a public school and a very large one that does not have great options right now (slim chance of a Big East invite) but hopes of building a better new stadium and supporting their teams.

A&M politicos = strong SEC support
UT politicos = strong "status quo" support
UH politicos = strong "A&M to SEC" support
TT politicos = ?
Baylor politicos = "just don't f--- us" support

SEC should just invite A&M and Missouri now.

Take their time with teams 15 & 16 since the ACC situation is a little more complex.

Honest question on personal preferences:

Would you be want Texas in the Pac (with equal revenue sharing and a new-found willingness to cooperate with conference-mates) if it meant that Baylor was pushed to an athletic conference that either began with either "sun" or "mid"?

Put me down for a "yes".

I don't want Texas in the PAC with a box,
I don't want them with a fox,
not in a house,
not with a mouse,
I don't want them no matter the here or there,
I don't want them anywhere

Wasn't one of the main points of CU joining the PAC to be able to play in front of alums in CA? The thought of losing ANY of those games in favor of playing in TX just makes me ill.

I like this guy.

A) Texas fans are all A-holes
2) ATM fans are A-holes when their team is good
d) Please for the love of all that's good and holy - leave SOME sort of tradition in college football where conferences are formed by schools with similar traits.
* Yeah, I get it - CU is new to the Pac-12. But they fit. This super conference crap is one of the reasons I HATE the NFL.

UH OH, Chip brown taking orders from D. Dodd in trying to derail aggy's move to the SEC?
There may be some bumps in the road for Texas A&M and the Aggies' ability to make a clean break for the Southeastern Conference.

Dan Branch, R-Dallas, the chairman of the House Higher Education Committee told Orangebloods.com on Saturday that it would be "highly inappropriate" for the Texas A&M Board of Regents to take any action during a Monday meeting that would finalize a move to the SEC.

Branch called a hearing of his committee for Tuesday and invited Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin and Texas A&M regents chair Richard Box to testify about why this would be in the best interest of A&M and the state of Texas.

"It's my understanding the regents meeting on Monday is to begin negotiations, not complete them - assuming the SEC extends an offer," Branch told Orangebloods.com. "It would be important to the Legislature that the regents not complete anything before lawmakers get to ask some questions.

"It's my understanding from talking to A&M officials that it may take a week or two weeks to finalize any conference realignment anyway."

On Friday, Texas A&M moved up a meeting of the regents from Aug. 22 to Monday - one day before Branch's scheduled hearing on Texas A&M's current situation. The move looked like a game of beat-the-clock with lawmakers.

An administrator at a Big 12 school told Orangebloods.com that the Atlantic Coast Conference has a meeting planned for Monday with its 12 schools to reaffirm their commitment to each other.

This comes after Doug Gottlieb of ESPN reported that Missouri, Clemson and Florida State could be joining Texas A&M in the SEC.

Missouri athletic director Mike Alden denied any contact between the Tigers and the SEC to several media outlets, including PowerMizzou.com. Behind the scenes, Missouri is also telling the rest of the Big 12 that any contact with the SEC hasn't happened.

A Big 12 official told me that Oklahoma continues to tell the rest of the Big 12 that it is not interested in joining the SEC. The SEC definitely reached out to OU during its courtship of Texas A&M, the source said. The source said Bob Stoops has indicated to OU officials that the best path to win championships is in the Big 12, not the SEC, in part because the Big 12 no longer has a championship game.

The New York Times reported Saturday that an SEC official said there is a 30 to 40 percent chance the SEC presidents will reject Texas A&M as the 13th member of the conference.

Lots of interesting stuff going on and everyone has their agenda. Some SEC schools are leery of adding a school already in their footprint (FSU, Clemson) and those schools might shoot down the deal with A&M if FSU or Clemson is part of the package. They really want North Carolina or NC State, but Mizzou would work as well. Mizzou has finally learned their lesson from last year ("hey Texas...shove it! The Big 10 is after us like Cam Newton's dad after a dollar, and we are out of here!...uh, what? the Big 10 commish suddenly won't return our calls? ****!!!) and they are staying very low profile. Good move on their part.

A&M is leaving. If it's not the SEC, it will be somewhere. They have burned that bridge and it's just a matter of where, at this point.

I wonder if it's ever dawned on the folks in Austin that maybe they're the reason everybody wants out of the Big 12.
