Here's what I've heard....
Mike Shanahan and Jack Vickers are good friends. At some point in the last month Vickers asked Shanahan if he'd have any interest in the CU job should it become available. Shanahan allegedly said "hypothetically" that should the job open up he would listen.
I wonder if Vickers is actually doing this. Vickers was a big time donor during the 80s and 90s but has not felt a part of the program for some time now. He still gives, but not with the veracity and quantity he used to. Vickers certainly has the clout with both sides to act as an intermediary.
Neil Woelk is the same guy that said there was NO CHANCE that Talkins would be fired during the season. Keep that in mind about his sources..
Woelk says what he is authorized to say IMO. He's not a very good barometer of what is going to happen. He is out there saying what keeps him in good graces with MB, up to and including floating trial balloons and disinformation. JMO.
so far he is correct
well... IF Hawkins is fired after OSU, then he was ONLY a week off....
If Hawkins is fired and retained to coach NU, then he is technically correct......
Actually, whoa, I misquoted Woelk.
Woelk said that Talkins will not be FIRED after this year regardless of record..
I will go to the archives to find that article and post it for everyone..
well.... that changes things.... doesn't it?
I am sure when he said it... no one expected this disaster to unfold....
there sure were alot of "gashers" we let up since those statements were made....
Here you go.. November 1, 2009 Woelk said no change is coming according to him..
Woelk two weeks later is stating that he's not sure Talkins "will be brought back"..
Still think the guy has any credibility?
then we can oly assume that Bon did a good job keeping things under wraps.... and ISU sealed his fate... I havent seen the ISU game yet so I have no idea how bad we really were...
You got some serious issues in your program if a game against Iowa State makes or breaks you..
Talkins is gone..
I beleive that ISU was the 8th nail in the coffin.
I also beleive Bohn did not want anything leaking until now.... There would be MUCH more damage if leaks were out a few weeks ago....
I believe this to be the case, and it makes alot of sense.
We're not battling the dems here, jimmy. He used the word 'bet'. That means that it wasnt likely, but could still happen. He didnt cite any source or flat out say it wouldnt happen.
Vickers wouldn't be the only person Shannahan said that to
your comments are making me believe you have some kind of knowledge
you are keeping under your hat
He knows that a friend of his (and Shanny's) said that Shanny will listen to CU.
Philly is correct, I have friends that are good friends with the Shannahans, good enough that they used to get sideline passes to bronco games.
I'm not saying for sure Mike SHannahan will be the next CU coach, but for people to say there is almost zero chance, when Mike has said to numerous people that he would listen. I know I know "listen" is the key word. However, if talking to a friend if he wasn't interested at all, he probably would have just said "no" when asked if he would be interested in taking the CU job.
As Josh McDaniels would say- "You always listen"
I'm definitely in the camp of, it's not gonna happen, but it's not like it's just baseless speculation.
There are some reasons Shanny would listen, especially when the NFL HC vacancies are places like Washington, Oakland, Buffalo and maybe Dallas. I bet he'd rather kill a couple of years coaching CU than doing any of those jobs, then leaving Kyle in charge. Not sure I like the idea of Kyle as HC, talk about lack of experience.
Interesting that we are hearing the same thing, yet from totally different places.
