She has signed her NLI. This is the gal from England that we were discussing in the "new coach" thread. She has only been playing BB for 4 years but has already played on the English U18 national team twice. I've seen her height listed as 6'1, 6'2, 6'3, and 6'4 so take your pick. Prospect Nation has her listed as a 4* and the 9th rated International player for 2016. There's also a video out there somewhere that shows her putting the ball in the basket with her hands at the rim, so she's tall enough to do that.

    Edit: Here's that "dunk" video

and here's a highlight video. Looks like she is #13 in this one

    And a Q&A with her

Watching the highlights and realizing the quality of the opposition may not have been good, she looks like she can come in and start. At least she has the offensive skills to do so. She looks like she feels comfortable posing up and uses both her hands around the basket and follows shots. She can dribble penetrate and hit perimeter jumpers.

Looks to be a good start to the JR Payne era, at least in terms of recruiting.

CU still has a scholarship to give if they'd like.

With a center signed, Coach Payne can be choose and not "settle". In the past, I think CU has settled for players out of desperation. No more of that!

    Welcome Eleanor and Go Buffs!

Howell stated in his piece today: "The Buffs have one more scholarship to use for the 2016-17 season and they are actively recruiting to fill that spot."

Would be sick to see her dunk in a game. Would be on SCTop10

I always wondered if we would see Jamee Swan throw one down in a game or at least during warm-ups since I was told she could. Never happened.

Is it a technical foul to dunk in warm-ups?

Don't know. I'm pretty sure Brittany Griner did dunk in warm-ups. But that was a number of years ago so maybe the rules have been changed.

Official article announcing Ms.'s Jones signing to join the Buffs - http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=210916427

Note to mods- they're saying below she is a forward. Athough position labels seem to matter less and less in bball (esp. between 4's and 5's), might want to update the thread title?

    "
BOULDEREleanor Jones has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her education and play for the University of Colorado women’s basketball team beginning with the 2016-17 season, head coach JR Payne announced on Wednesday.

Jones is a 6-foot, 2-inch forward from Salisbury, England. She attends Charnwood College and plays for the United Kingdom’s Leicester Riders.

“Eleanor is someone that people are going to love to watch,” said Payne. “She is an exciting player and extremely athletic. She is very skilled and just really gifted with a rare combination of athleticism, size and skill. Eleanor can stretch the defense with her ability to shoot, and she can defend and rebound with her athleticism. She’s someone who will have a huge impact in all four years of her career here.”

I didn't remember the change to the rules for mbb. I imagine the rule is the same for wbb.

It sure seemed like an idiotic rule, at least from a fan perspective. I imagine some coaches won't allow it (injury potential, whether real or imagined).

Found this interesting. She could have been in the 2015 freshman class but reclassified to 2016. So she is a year older and has an additional year of experience with her club team and the English U18 team.

That extra year of experience should have allowed her to improve with her team.

While Salisbury, England is beautiful in a mystical way, Eleanor will not know how to handle Boulder's sunshine and snow!

Snow? That's just a cold, heavy form of rain! Its the 300+ days of sunshine that will dazzle her......just like folks from Michigan.

If you are referring to Stonehenge as the place of mystical beauty I would wholeheartedly agree. It's really special to see in person, tv just can't do it justice.

As for acclimating to Boulder, I would guess in addition to the sun and sun, the lack of humidity will also be an adjustment. England isn't as awful weather wise as I anticipated before living there a year and a half ago. There was rarely what I would think of as "bad weather," at least by Boulder standards.

Back to basketball recruiting, with the remaining scholarship I hope the coaching staff is able to find a post player with immediate eligibility.

I can assure you, Buffgal, that my daughter will always choose and never "settle" vis a vis her recruiting :) She & her husband are great recruiters. Thanks for being a fan. Buff fortunes in women's basketball are changing!

OK. My curiosity was still not satisfied on this topic of a technical foul for dunking during warm-ups, so I did some more digging. Here's what I found re: the bolded sentence in the above quoted post. In a game on 3/2/13, Baylor at West Virginia, Brittany Griner dunked several times during warm-ups. In the final box score for that game there were no technical fouls assessed against Baylor. So, at least as of that date, it was not against the NCAA rules for a player to dunk during warm-ups in WBB. Here's a video of the warm-ups.

Even in MBB when it was a Tech, it was only a Technical foul if the refs saw it. So if you went early enough everyone was dunking, hanging on the rim, etc, but then as soon as the refs came out, it all stopped, kinda silly if you ask me.

But with that said, I am guessing this was after the refs came out as the stands looked pretty full.

Well, this is really good news, especially since I did fear that we may have problems signing her with the coaching change. Now the big questions are, how tall is this young lady(some sources say 6'4". some say 6'3" and some say 6'2") and how well will she adapt to living in "The Colonies", especially the American cuisine.

After watching a few videos of her play, I am really impressed with her athleticism and ball handling skills, as well as her play away from the rim. She reminds me a lot of Kathryn Westbeld from Notre Dame or even our own Jamee Swan. I would much rather have front court players who are athletic and skilled than the 6'4" or 6'5" players with two left feet who can't play 10 minutes a game before they are in foul trouble. Remember, the best Buffs rebounder of the last 5 years was Arielle Roberson and she is only 6'1" and she did much the same for WV this past year.

Another advantage that Ms. Jones brings is that she should have little trouble communicating. English isn't too awful different than what we speak here in the colonies. This is good. :)

Another thing to note is that while she was born in Salisbury, she plays basketball in Leicester which is where King Richard III was recently "reinterred" in Leicester Cathedral. This should make her an instant hit with the English Lit and the History crowd since the debate still rages on with some of this crowd as to whether he was an honorable heir to the throne or a murderous crippled fiend. This, of course, has nothing to do with WBB but neither do some of the other postings on this thread, especially about dunking.

Anyway, welcome to Boulder Eleanor Jones.

In my mystical reference, I was referring to both Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral. I happened to be there on a day when it was foggy and misty. People had to get up close to Stonehenge to even see it for the fog and mist. However, I had read a book set in Salisbury and the book had perfectly described that day. I didn't want to leave.

Eleanor may have problems finding her bangers and mash. If she is adaptable to the food and climate, she will do fine in Boulder. From the looks of things, her teammates will help her.

British English and American English are not the same language. There are many similarities, but I have been there and wondered what somebody had just said to me.

I am also impressed with her athleticism. We've all seen big players who trip over their own two feet. I don't think they get many scholarships these days.

Well, EdB60, the dunking discussion was definitely a sidetrack, but it got started from a video I posted saying it showed Eleanor dunking in a practice so we can't say that dunking has nothing to do with WBB.
