2024 Pac 12 Tourney thread- #3 seed MEN'S bball (Las Vegas; their 1st game vs. #6 Utah/ #11 ASU winner, Thurs., 3/14, 9:30 PM MT, FS1)

Especially Dana. That goes back to the days Tad was an assistant under Turgeon at Wichita State and Dana was coaching Creighton. Bad blood for 25 years. Enfield he definitely hates and thinks is a punk. Miller I always thought he got along with personally and respected as a player & coach within the game. It's not like Tad is some purist - some of his mentors & best friends in the game (Larry, Self and Calipari) aren't exactly Boy Scouts.

I always found the Tad/Miller relationship odd. He completely called him out for buying Ayton and others, and IIRC talked about how Arizona was the poster child of why MBB was broken at the time (now I think we can all agree its NIL), but in the end, it didn't seem like there was actually real bad blood and some level of mutual respect.

Early on Tad's time at CU, he was pretty vocal off camera about disliking Dana and his program. Feel there are some good stories out there.

But how could you otherwise weigh the quality of the wins?
It's already baked into NET. UBL?

The quadrants are minimally useful guideposts, but like any categorical data there can be misleading generalizations. Hopefully the committee members are looking holistically at SOR, SOS, and then digging into game by game comparisons for the close cases.

IMO, top quality wins should matter a lot. But I think that's for when you get to decisions beyond what NET isn't able to clearly show a difference between 2 teams. Final selections and seeding. At that point, I definitely prefer a team that has shown it can beat a 1-4 seeded team over a team which hasn't shown that but has a clean resume (avoided bad losses or too many mediocre losses).

So, that has me looking at CU as a no-brainer to be in but not worthy of a 5-7 seed despite our NET unless they win the P12T by beating Arizona.

LAS VEGAS — Colorado's KJ Simpson and Eddie Lampkin Jr. each recorded double-doubles and the Buffaloes pulled away down the stretch Thursday to take a 72-58 win over Utah in the Pac-12 tournament quarterfinals at T-Mobile Arena.

Tad Boyle's third-seeded Buffs won their seventh straight to improve to 23-9 and collect a critical win in what many observers viewed as an "elimination game" in the battle to clinch at least an at-large NCAA Tournament berth.

Colorado will now face No. 2 seed Washington State in Friday's 8:30 p.m. (MT) semifinal at T-Mobile Arena.

Utah fell to 19-14.

Simpson finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists while Lampkin totaled 17 points and 12 rebounds. Tristan da Silva chipped in 14 for the Buffaloes.

Hunter Erickson and Brendon Carlson led Utah with 13 points each.

Colorado led by three at the break, 33-30, after the Utes used a 15-0 run to erase a 14-point CU lead before the Buffs came back to regain the lead in the final minutes of the half.

The Buffs then took full control for the final 20 minutes, building their lead to double-digits less than eight minutes in. Utah briefly cut Colorado's lead back to five with just more than nine minutes to play but the Buffs used a 16-5 surge over the next five minutes to take a 68-52 lead and put the game away.

Colorado shot 28-for-63 from the floor, including an efficient 7-for-14 from long range. CU held the Utes to 33% shooting (21-for-64), including an 8-for-30 night from beyond the arc. Utah hit six 3-pointers in the first half but missed its first eight attempts in the second half and finished just 2-for-16 in the final 20 minutes.

CU also finished with just seven turnovers and had a 47-37 edge on the boards. The Buffs are now 91-6 in the Boyle era when hitting the "gold standard" of holding an opponent to 40% percent or less shooting and having at least a plus-8 rebound margin.

"I'm really proud of this group, especially to win a game when we certainly didn't play our best in the first half," Boyle said. "The credit goes to these players. They're a veteran group who understand how to win, understand what it takes to win, and they made adjustments at halftime. We held them to two 3s instead of 6 and that was the difference in the game. These guys deserve a lot of credit for what they've done this year and what we'll continue to do this year."
...

"We were just running them off the line (in the second half)," Simpson said. "I think communication was the biggest thing, understanding where people are, where shooters are, and running them off the line with a high hand and not letting them get attempts up as much."

Lampkin proved to be a force all night against the Utes' big front line. Utah's three big men combined for just 15 points on 6-for-16 shooting while Lampkin was an ultra-efficient 8-for-14 with three assists to go with his 17 points and 12 boards. When he left the game with a couple minutes to play, a sizable CU crowd chanted, "Eddie, Eddie."

"It felt good," Lampkin said. "Everyone screaming my name, it felt like a home game."

After building their big lead, the Buffs held the Utes at bay over the final minutes to collect the win and advance to Friday night's semifinal matchup against Washington State.

The Buffs split a pair with WSU this season.

"Washington State is a hell of a team," Boyle said. We beat them shorthanded in Boulder. They weren't at their best. They got us in Pullman. We weren't at our best. So I think it should be a hell of a game. They've got some good players. They're well-coached. It's not going to be easy, but nothing's easy in March, especially in the semifinals of a tournament like this."
...

DECISIVE MOMENT: After Utah closed CU's lead to five midway through the second half, the Buffs responded with a 16-5 run to take complete control and the Utes never threatened over the final minutes.

WHAT IT MEANS: The win should virtually guarantee the Buffs an NCAA Tournament berth.

KEY STATISTICS: Colorado shot 28-for-63 from the floor, including an efficient 7-for-14 from long range … The Utes shot 33% (21-for-64), including an 8-for-30 night from beyond the arc … Utah hit six 3-pointers in the first half but missed its first eight attempts in the second half and finished just 2-for-16 in the final 20 minutes … CU also finished with just seven turnovers and had a 47-37 edge on the boards

NEXT UP: The Buffs move on to the Pac-12 tourney semifinals with an 8:30 p.m. matchup Friday night against No. 2 seed Washington State, which defeated Stanford in Thursday's quarterfinal.

Tristan watching Eddie's highlights: "Oh my God - OH MY GOD!" :ROFLMAO:

Hadley, the P12 Player of the (last) Week, deserves a lot of praise:

Buffzone:
"it was defense, particularly in the second half, that secured the Buffs’ third Pac-12 semifinal berth in the past four years.

Hadley drew the assignment on Utah’s Gabe Madsen, who shot .538 (14-for-26) during the teams’ two regular season meetings. With Hadley guarding him for much of the night, Madsen struggled to a 3-for-14 mark and went 1-for-9 on 3-pointers before finishing with nine points.

“When we played (Utah) in Boulder, he didn’t start on (Madsen). We put him on him in the second half and he really shut him down,” CU head coach Tad Boyle said. ”Tonight, he had him the whole game. KJ had him a little bit, too. It was a good team effort. But (Hadley’s) defensive effort tonight was phenomenal. Madsen’s been a thorn in a side both times we’ve played them. (Hadley) deserves a lot of credit.”

He's absolutely an NBA talent. He needs to work on his game, but he can play in the NBA. He should be a three year college guy though.
Honestly I'd love to see what Tad could do with Bronny.

Tad is so good at developing raw guards to say the least. Dinwiddie, Burks, Derrick White, and now KJ progressed significantly under Tad. White went from being a D2 player to being drafted in the 1st round in a year. And KJ looks like a completely different player this season, and has gone from being relatively unknown to getting picked as early as the late 1st round on some mock drafts.

For me, quads basically cease to have meaning when Colorado...a quad one team by every measure, gets downgraded because they don't have enough "Quad 1" wins.

How do you put a "quad 2" team over a Colorado when beating CU gets you a significant bump, but beating, say...Seton Hall isn't considered a great win.

You're outright admitting you know Colorado is a better team...

We're favored today over WSU...a team easily in the field. Why??? Because Colorado is better than WSU by every metric, but you want to put WSU in because they've "done more"?

We're supposed to have the best however many at large teams. The BEST teams. Metrics are all that should matter.

is it correct that if Lovering didn't pull his surprise transfer, we would have had him instead of Eddie?

If so, we need to send him a thank you present
We did. He got to play against a real center - for learning purposes

Was joking. Agree that the quadrants are completely arbitrary and unnecessary.

@torero - a ruling? Is 6'2" short in the modern NBA? I feel like it is.
I also don't think he's 6'2. He fits the definition of a small guard. My rule of "Small guards don't get drafted early" might be challenged this year by a historically weak draft class. We know Cody's going to be a lottery pick, he's getting top 5 hype because of the weakness of this class.

If Cody had been in last year's draft class, he goes maybe 11th? Jett Howard was a WTF pick that no one expected last year, Cody probably goes ahead of Grady Dick, with the benefit of hindsight he probably doesn't go ahead of Dereck Lively, who probably should've gone higher, and Jaime Jacquez, who definitely should've gone higher, but I don't think there's anyone in that top 10 Cody goes ahead of.

I've been woken up in the middle of night a few times in the last few weeks with the urgent need to take a dump, not because of any kind of bacchanalia, but just because my digestive tract hates me.

I have learned that you can train your bowels to **** when needed. I run 7-8 miles every other morning at 430am. When I started that insanity a few years ago, I unfortunately faced the issue of getting a few miles in and needing to evacuate my bowels….so I shat in nature (thankfully on dark trails). So I take a dump before every run to avoid that unpleasantness. But now, every ****ing morning whether I am running or not, my colon wakes me up at 4am, telling me, get up because I have a load to release. I have not slept in for many years. Cool story.

I literally had my running routes around my old house planned around me having to take a **** 1 - 3 miles in.

I stopped watching the Buffs on TV around the time we lost to UCLA. I followed the games while they were in progress but was getting too stressed out watching o TV.

Then we started winning. So I was feeling like watching live on TV was bad luck.

Last night I gave in and watched the game. I guess I’m either no longer a jinx or never was one. 😂

Take it somewhere else. This is the poop thread!

Dante injured a minute into the game. Ballo dominating without him. I think Dante will be back. They desperately need him.

Doesn’t this belong in the Bronco thread?
