I understand that the penalty is to forfeit 1/2 the money received from the conference revenue, which boils down to TV money, bowl money, and basketball tourney money.
Beebe got Snow Orange and the nine dwarves to stay in by promising them double the present TV revenue. Well, as I see it, if that TV deal starts paying by next season, CU and the corn get their half share (1/2 of $15 million > 1/2 $10 million).
Where it really gets interesting is the year after. Assuming the corn leave for the Big 10 at the end of the coming season, CU is still in an 11 team Big 12 conference in 2011-12 and still entitled to a 1/2 share of conference revenue (now only split by 11, not 12 teams).
The question will be: will what's left of the Big 12 realize that they're better off letting CU go to the PAC XX in 2011-12 and forgoing CU's forfeiture for that season, or do they really want a ****ed up 11 team schedule and to pay CU $7 or $8 million? Remember, Beebe got his TV numbers by floating a 10 team league.
Looking into the future, I don't see how the Big 12 gets the whole financial forfeiture from CU. :smile2:
