LOBATO LEAVING: Seth Lobato, a redshirt freshman who was changing positions for fall camp, has told coaches he's leaving the program.
This comes after Hawkins announced during the CU coaches' state tour in May that the former walk-on quarterback from Eaton had requested a move to safety.
At a stop in Greeley, Hawkins said the 6-5, 215-pound Lobato had approached the staff about moving to defense after spring drills concluded in mid-April.
At the time, Hawkins said he was all for the position switch: "He's 6-5, he can run and he's smart. He can play somewhere - he's too good not to be on the field somewhere at some point."
Hawkins also said on the coaches' tour that if Lobato discovered he was better suited to play on offense he could return and be "a slash-type player."
Three quarterbacks remain on the roster - senior Cody Hawkins, junior Tyler Hansen and true freshman Nick Hirschman.

I am not posting here to bash Hawk. I just want some information on this kid. Although Lobato was a walk-on, I was always hoping he may turn out to be something good at whatever position. Hawk's quote: "He's 6-5, he can run and he's smart. He can play somewhere - he's too good not to be on the field somewhere at some point."

Did we lose someone good here? Did anyone every see anything promising out of him?

Just curious.

I liked Seth and was rooting for him. I hope he has another school, Maybe UNC, that will let him play QB.

He had a nice scramble for a TD in the spring game, otherwise nothing of note. I wish him luck but I'm sweating the loss of a walk-on QB who wanted to play safety.

Makes me a little uneasy that should we need an emergency 3rd string QB it means Hirschman's redshirt would be pulled. In the grand scheme of things, we've got two commits for 2011 so it's less of an issue. Those verbals could be lost with a change of heart or of coaching, but ultimately I don't think it will be an issue. Though he was never used, Patrick Devenny was our emergency guy in 2006. Superman's probably that this fall unless we add a late Juco or walk-on.

while you want to give the kid a shot to get on the field (position change), this was probably Lobato's main potential contribution. pulling Hirschman's RS would stink, but at least it wouldn't be pulling the #2's RS for two straight seasons in a row. were that to ever happen, that would be the suck. kinda make the staff look indecisive or possibly have bad judgment.

That makes me uneasy, too. But Lobato leaving did not change anything on the issue. There's a reason that he was moved to a new position. He was never going to see the field at CU as a quarterback outside of practice.

Seemed like a good guy and was definitely a good athlete. I'm not sure he was a BCS-level player, though. If he can go to UNC or Mines or something and play quarterback while getting financial aid, I have trouble disagreeing with the decision. Disappointing, though. I thought he had some potential as a WR (but not really at Safety or Quarterback).

P.S. In 2011, two injuries at QB wil also result in a freshman losing his redshirt. It's not all that uncommon these days. Lots of QBs transfer if they're past their redshirt year and not even in the 3-deep.

remind me - and apologies for missing it if already posted: Did Moten switch positions formally, or was that just internet banter? Not too late for him to move back to QB.

Moten is a Cornerback. This was in an interview article he did with Rivals back in January and then he was on the Spring depth chart at CB. Only way I could see him or Evans moving back to QB would be a desperate situation or a new coach coming in and switching our offense to an option look.

I believe since his return to CU after failing to qualify the last time it's been DB all the way for Moten.

Edit: And I think we'll need the depth there more than QB even with only three on the roster.

Good luck to Seth. I didn't see enough of him to have an opinion one way or the other. Hopefully, he gets to a situation that suits him.

I don't think so since he was not a scholarship player.

I am so ashamed :sorry:, except I kind of think I'll see that stuff over here, and didn't. At least I looked, but you're right, reading the whole thread seemed like goofing off at work... :yeah_right:

Moten could possibly play as an emergency #3 should that happen.

Our QB situation is crap, but not because our supposed third string walk-on QB is leaving the team. It's crap because we have one guy who is obviously the more gifted player who is supposedly fighting for the starting job with the coach's son.

Our QB situation is crap because both options at the position aren't good enough to save Danny's job.

Danny is making his job harder by continually playing the crappier of the two as well.

There's a little hope inside of me that says that Hansen can get the job done if he's given the opportunity and the necessary reps in practice. Thus, I'm not going to throw him under the bus and say he's not good enough to save Danny's job. Danny will screw that up all on his own.

Lobato almost got in the Toledo game at QB had we gotten the ball back late in the game (after Cody got clocked). Don't know what we've lost...

this isn't a nepotism comment really, but it seems they've been willing to state that they'll steer the playcalling/playbook to Cody's strength's and not weaknesses. while last year, after nearly every Hanson start, Dan would state in the post-game or Tuesday presser that they didn't want Taylor to tuck and run. now, i get that you want TH to not get in the habit of taking off after the first read isn't there, be patient and go through progressions.....but, Dan seemed to say they didn't want him to make plays with his feet as much over and above the happy feet angle.

not sure what to make of that, but it doesn't seem thus far that TH has had the commitment from a strategic standpoint. regardless, we've been plain bad on O 3 of the 4 Hawk years which is the bigger issue, really. finishing 12th or 11th once is what it is, in succession is simply bad.
