    Ties to school....overrated
    Ties to area......overrated
    HC experience.....invaluable
    Recruiting ability...invaluable
    Coaching ability....overrated

Three things keep coaches: payroll, facilities, AD

Pac 10 is nowhere for somebody to learn to be a head coach.

    What's up BC? Been awhile.

Thanks for the advice. I'd concur on all of the above.

That's all well and good, but Hawk met all those criteria in 2005 when we hired him. No ties to the school. No ties to the area, was a HC at a successful program, was supposedly a solid recruiter, and a decent motivator.

Ties to area and school I'd still say are overrated... I disagree that ability is overrated. If you have a damned good scheme and can get the most out of your players, that can cover up a ton of talent deficiencies.

Yup. At the end of the day, it's a crapshoot. That's why even schools like OU, UT and Bama don't always get the 'right' guy.

Overrated doesn't mean you can't have them. CDHs recruiting ability was severely misjudged by many including me.

Pretty much everything about Hawkins was misjudged. He's an incompetent fool.

Did *** have ties to Florida?
Did CNS have ties to Louisiana?

It helps but it not that important.

Well, Halk´s recruting seems to be one of the minor problems. The talent on this CU team may not exactly rival Bama´s, but then I wonder how much better we´d be with the talent you have as Halk is absolutely clueless as a coach and can´t coach worth a ****.

    BC,

    I agree.

One thing you missed that I believe is essential, though, is:

Large coaching tree / network... invaluable.

If the guy can recruit, knows how to run a BCS organization, and has the network to put a great staff together then you have what you need. If he's also got ties to the school or area, that's a nice bonus to fundraising and booster/community relations, but certainly isn't a job requirement. As far as coaching ability, I agree that it's overrated. Leadership, organizational and people skills matter with the HC. Probably best if he's not tinkering with the offense or defense because it distracts him from his job and is too many cooks in the kitchen. Great HCs let their coaches coach.

It's his attitude. He doesn't ****ing care whether we win or lose. It's all about the process to him, and keeping your chi and zen in balance. That **** doesn't work in football. He may be a good golf coach, but not football isn't the sport for Danny.

CNS has ties virtually everywhere at this point.

*** has got to be the reason you folks down there in $EC country started doing that odd little "Cxx" thing. That's classic!

And your advice at the top makes a lot of sense to me. Good work!

Yes. We did get a 4* late when Richardson left UCLA and signed here before the summer ended, but essentially true.

Hawk's a pretty good bull**** artist when he's got something to sell. When he had "new regime" he pulled a top 35 class. When he had "new regime coming off a bowl game" he pulled a top 15 class. Since then, recruiting has been in the cellar.

I also believe this staff is good at scouring the country to identify guys late in the process who may have been missed. It's the one strength they brought from Boise State that has translated well.

When CNS first went to LSU he had never coached in the south. I remember the 'he is a yankee-we do things different down here posts'. He built a damn machine at LSU that was so good even the madhatter can't screw it up.

Your team is kicking ass again. Saban is a college ball genius. Congrats!

Yup. Took ND 4 tries. And the guy that might be the right guy even has an irish last name.

Here's hoping our 4th coach from Mac will be the right guy.

Last year´s class wasn´t stellar by any means, but we had some nice classes before that and Halk couldn´t do anything with them. With a decent coach I think we could comfortably get to a decent bowl and win like 7-8 games, but this coaching staff would maybe get 6-7 wins out of the current Bama team.

Head Coaching Experience - not necessary. Coordinator experience at a major program is important. McCartney and Crowder both came to CU from programs as top assistants. Both were lights out recruiters and had been mentored by experienced head coaches - Crowder by Bud Wilkinson and Bill McCartney by Bo Schembechler. I think how you get the experience and who teaches you is very important.

Hawk was recruiting well until the constant losing made quality recruits start looking the other way. Even as bad as we were last year and with the speculation that Hawk would be fired I was surprised with the class we ended up with. Not a lot of highly recognized guys but a number of guys who could legitimately develop into BCS quality players.

That develop word is the problem. Hawk and Co. have demonstrated clearly that they do not consistently develop players to close to their abilities. This team has no clear identity, no clear mission, no clear desire to achieve. The result is that players underperform and we end up with embarrasing loses like Saturdays. Cal is a talented team but no way are they 40+ points better than CU in the talent department. The problem was that we had no motivation, no clear sense of purpose, and no answer for what Cal was doing, just like so many other games under Hawk.

One of the things I feel good about is that if we can get rid of him now his successor will have at least some decent players to develop and work with in rebuilding the program.

I think you guys saying CDH recruits well is way off base. Last year Bama got more 5 and 4 stars last year than he did in his entire time at CU.

So you're saying that if you don't recruit as good as Bama, you don't recruit well? I understand CDH's recruiting hasn't been really good, but his first two years were relatively good and very good compared with other teams with similar records.

I see your point, but Colorado is never going to recruit better than Alabama, especially when Alabama is the best team in the nation.
