It looks like the Buffs will end up with 3 scholarships this year. 2 were used in the fall period on a couple 6'4" guards (Deleon Brown-SG & Bryce Peters-PG) to replace the departing Xavier Talton and Eli Stalzer.

With XJ likely to come back, that leaves Josh Scott as the final departing senior. Buffs desperately need to sign a young big. A guy who needs to develop a bit is something that CU can handle in consideration of how veteran they'll be next year, so it's not the worst thing in the world that we're likely looking at a developmental guy at this point.

    2016-17 big man roster:

    Wesley Gordon (5th year senior)
Tory Miller (older junior - 1 year of prep school)
    Kenan Guzonjic (4th year junior)
Xavier Johnson -- if Tad slides him to the "4" (5th year senior)

We need a young guy in the mix in a bad way. After striking out in the fall signing period with a number of high profile targets, here are some names that have been associated with CU who are unsigned and may be the guy.

    5 Bigs to Watch

    1. Dallas Walton
    [IMG]
The skinny, 6'9" PF from Arvada West (formerly played for Ralston Valley) is a superior athlete with a soft touch on his shot and good offensive skills. Injured a knee in October of last year, missing all of his junior season and this year's summer league. His first game is December 1st and if he's back I think his upside is higher than De'ron Davis. Considered the #2 prospect out of Colorado this year despite last year's injury.

    2. Harry Froling
    [IMG]
The big 6'9" 230 lb Aussie is rated a 4* on some sites. He is very open in his recruiting, with a visit to Wake Forest taken so far but no commitment. He's a shooter with a big body. Named Colorado among his Top 10 in August (Froling’s list, in no particular order, are Oregon, Oregon St, Boise St, Colorado, Kansas St, Miami, SMU, Creighton and Illinois.) Was MVP of Australia's U18 Junior Championship, where he average 22.4 ppg, 14.1 rpg and 3.1 apg. He compares his game to Kevin Love.

    3. Lucas Siewert
    [IMG]
This 6'9" 220 lb face-up 4 has some ball skills. 4* rating on a couple sites. Originally from Brazil (plays internationally for them) and goes to Los Angeles's Cathedral H.S. Siewert was an early commit for ASU, but de-committed when Sendek was fired. Buffs have been in contact, but it's unclear whether there is active recruitment in process. Highlights below show a smooth shooter.

    4. Majok Kur
    [IMG]
The 6'10" center from South Dakota (by way of Sudan) looks like a Wes Gordon style guy. Very willing passer who rebounds, blocks shots and has a developing offensive game. Focused on education and is thinking about an electrical engineering degree so he can go back and help out his home country after graduating. (Get him on campus for a visit and talking to Stephane Nembot.) Averaged 15/12/5 (blocks) his first year in the US and heads into his senior year a rising sleeper. Highlights and article HERE.

    5. Adrean Johnson
    [IMG]
Rivals reports an offer to the 6'8" forward from Red Oak (Dallas) HS who plays AAU for Team Texas Elite. Impressed at the Great American Shootout this summer, leading to the following write-up from Rivals' TexasHoops: Texas Hoops Analysis: ADREAN is a developing post player that has shown a ton of upside. He plays with his back to the basket and gets wide on the block. He has good hands and footwork to go along with a lean frame. He scores at the rim and plays above the rim. He is a nice shot-blocker, rebounder, and athlete. Was supposed to announce on 11/11, but did not.

Great write up nik, I was wondering what was happening here. Thanks. Also, Majok looks a quite a bit older than his listed age.

I wonder if they'll lean toward a more traditional inside player vs. someone with shooting range and ball skills. Not saying one player couldn't have both skill sets, but given Tad's premium on rebounding, will he give another roster spot to a finesse big?

I really like Walton. The question there is health. CU was targeting before the injury issues. It's up to him to show the athleticism he had before and get CU to step up with an offer. Rivals has DU, Middle Tennessee and Wyoming as his only offers.

Given walton's offer list, would it be safe to assume that if he's offered he will choose CU? I know tad's really big on keeping in-state talent in the state.

Tad can teach D. Would prefer a big who already has some tools on offense.

Thanks Nik! It's really hard, for me anyway, to get a handle on a kid by watching videos so I can't say that I'd have a preference for any of these kids. It'd be nice to keep an in state presence on the team though.

They really know how to put it in the hole. I'm sure you like how they handle the ball(s) too (y)

I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on a local kid that has an offer from Wyoming. Although, I don't like the fact that Tad had to go buy a Plan B pill after dating De'Ron.

Lucas Siewert has the athleticism, size and offensive skills that we'll need to replace Scott. I like the fact that he plays internationally for Brazil. Based on the early returns of the Akyazili experiment, I like the kids that have some international experience.

When Wes graduates we can focus more on the rebounder/shot blocker type (with developing offensive skills of course).

You mean a once in a decade consensus #1 pick who numerous NBA teams will tank for? Yes we do.

If that's an unrealistic expectation, I'd settle for a Hakeem type.

You're right. And if a Ewing or Hakeen isn't available, I'm fine with planning for small ball and picking up a Clyde the Glide Drexler type.

Maxpreps shows Walton averaging 13 pts, 10.6 rb, and 2.6 blocks through 5 games.

Shooting 47% from the field and 71% from the line.

Tad needs to get it together and get this type of player. Not that hard.

I'm going to throw a wildcard out there. What if the Buffs didn't go with a big in the spring and went with a wing instead?

I know it's probably a year early (White, Fortune, Fletcher all depart after 2016-17)... but if CU could sign Alpha Diallo we'd be taking the best player instead of worrying so much about signing a position fit.

Might be the direction to go, guys.

I'll put up a profile in a minute.

I'm a huge fan of that idea. Always take the better player. Let the position breakdown work itself out. Would you rather have Alec Burks or Ben Mills?

Yeah, I'm cranky so I went full hyperbole. But I'm a firm believer in taking the best talent and figuring it out later. You can win many different ways. Look at Villanova.

I am not picking on you but to everyone in this thread who says things like "i like the foreigner" they have good bball IQ's" "I like the Aussie" the AK experiment is going well, lets get more international players"

    I pose one question:

    Giant Boulder
    or
    Shane Harris-Tunks

I like Diallo, he looks like a guy who is a fit for Tad's style.

It's great having Scott do all the things he does for us but Tad has won before without that.

If he can get his scoring and defense from the versatile wings that can play a variety of roles then he can get by taking a big guy next year who may not be much of an offensive threat but who can rebound and physically battle the other teams bigs. he even managed to get rebounds from a wing when Roberson was here.

Eventually we need to get some more size but rather than take a big guy just to take him bring in a plus player at wing and concentrate on making sure the size comes next class.
