Think about it....hire the head coach from a team that was a bunch of over-achieving, hustling, smart athletes. Stick him in a top conference where he would be able to enhance the over-achievers with a bunch of top recruits. It should have been a winning formula...at least that was my thought back when I was watching the news conference heralding Hawk's arrival on ESPN News.

Unfortunately, Hawk's staff did not come with him from Boise to Boulder. It is clear to me that Hawk did a great job of hiring the right coordinators at Boise. In Boulder, he has failed miserably. And unfortunately, he does not have the ability to step in and get the team on track. His coaching of the WRs receivers this year was a great opportunity, and he has screwed the pooch.

The fraud has been exposed. Let's move on, Mr, Bohn.....we don't blame you for the hire. It made sense at the time. But, we will blame you if you do not pull the trigger before a death spiral of the athletic program kicks in....

I'm with you but I think you can't unring that bell. We're already spiraling. I think if he pulled the trigger now we might be able to salvage something this year but hoping for a Rockies like rebirth might be asking too much. We can dream though.

I think at this point, we are stuck with Hawk through the season. I also agree with waiting. I wanted him fired after CSU, but now we might as well ride it out and save the $900k or whatever.

But he'd better be gone in the offseason....

Why not an interim coach? At least that gives recruits some promise of a change. At this point, I think we can forget about anything other than a class that ranks less than Top-50. Perhaps it is the same result regardless of a change now or at the end of the season....screw the whole damn thing.

How do we save $900K by not firing him. He will get paid no matter what. If he is on the sidelines we will lose no matter what but if we fire him, we may have a chance to win. He is not out on the field playing, the players are playing.

Fire him and at least we know that something is in the works. At this point, no coach is better than what we have.

I too have completely bought into the 'staff didn't join so now we see the Emperor's new clothes' notion. Urban Meyer was somewhat more successful in the move to Florida, but he had something else going for him: he knew Good from Bad coordinators so when he started replacing new staff gaps, he made wise choices.

I don't blame Coach Hawkins for not developing skills in his players. I blame him for hiring and retaining coordinators who couldn't-wouldn't do it.

Goree - "I guess I'm not mentally ready". That line leaves me wondering what IS going on.

I agreed with the hire at the time. And while I had my doubts, I still believed Hawk would turn us around this season. I was obviously very wrong.

Hawk did bring Ron Collins with him (Even though he was not his first choice at DC from what I've heard). Hawk also brought Riddle, Bandison and Strausser with him. I actually thought he brought too many of his Boise coaches with him. There were just too many coaches on staff that had not coached at the BCS level and it showed in 2006.

One thing many of us didn't realize at the time of his hiring is that because Hawkins had never coached at the BCS or NFL level or played at the BCS or NFL level, his connections were limited. He brought in the assistants he thought would be successful, but lets be honest many of them had limited experience as well and only knew Dan through his days at Boise.

One thing to keep in mind is that while I don't blame Bohn for considering Hawkins to be a "home run hire," I do blame him for not making a more extensive coaching search. From what I've read, and maybe someone more connected can correct me on this, is that Bohn was focused on Hawkins as his guy and didn't look at other options with an open mind. It sounds like that has created some distrust with some donors. Maybe that is false and maybe the donors I'm speaking of are just bitter that Embree wasn't hired, but if true that makes me question whether Bohn will hire the right guy this time around. Tom Cable @ Idaho, Chuck Long @ SDSU and Dan Hawkins @ Colorado have been poor hires by Bohn.

Will he make the right decision this time?

Yes, but it goes down by the amounts CU pays him. They're on the hook for the money whether it's over time or in a lump sum.

I hope "didn't realize" isn't something the selection committee now considers in hindsight. I hope they'll chalk it up to "did not evaluate properly".

But this could have been better considered if, as you'd written, they'd done a more extensive search. Or at least more follow-ups. Call up HS coaches and ask their opinions. Has this candidate built a good network of HS coaches? Has his summer-camps brought in top-calibre kids and have those panned out and wanted to join his college program years later?

Even if there are a few red-flags raised, it's tough to properly evaluate, especially when changing regions and division-levels.

I remember wondering about Petersen's not coming along. I thought this was good for Boise State to maintain SOME consistency; I didn't think they'd maintain it ALL, though!

Fat, and we hope the people that paid him are SOOOO happy.

Yes, but if you fire him now you pay his buyout PLUS whatever you pay the new coach so it is cheaper to wait unless you go the interim coach route with someone currently on staff.
