Bowling for Dollars, by Anthony Crupi

    The ESPN revenue stream:
    $4.40/month per subscriber. 99.8 million subscribers, 12 months = $5.27 BILLION
Advertising revenues = approx. $1.5 BILLION

Looks like ESPN will still have some bucks to throw around for the Pac-12 come 2012.

Let's not forget Fox Sports as well who bidded a lot of money for the ACC rights only to lose to ESPN.

I'm willing to bet there would be a playoff system for college football if ESPN found they could turn a profit and make just as much money as they do now

The only 2 bowls ESPN doesn't have are the Sun (CBS) and Cotton (Fox).

I'm all for a bowls plus one format of some sort, but this ESPN thing has me worried. It's getting closer to a monopoly and that my friends is never good for the consumer. Say for example that ESPN decides that since they control all of the bowls, they do a pay per view type of programming. No longer is your ESPN,ESPN2 part of the "Premium Bowl Programming" and you get to pay through the nose again to watch bowls. To me, and if it evolves to this, it will really hurt college football.

I, for one, am glad that Fox is out of the BCS game for the next few years. I thought the Fox coverage of the BCS games was terrible the past few years.

Agreed. I thought the NFL announcers that they were using were awful. ESPN college football broadcasts is much better.

I agree about the quality of the broadcast, however, in the future will you guys be happy to shell out $44.95 for each bowl game? or maybe $100 bucks for the whole bowl season? (see ESPN game plan and UFC for examples) I'm just saying that it MIGHT happen that ESPN decides to place all the bowl games in a premium content format after a year or two. I can see it now. ESPN's BCS bowl package only $99 call your tv provider to sign up.

Not going to happen. What will ESPN fill their normal broadcasting slots with?

I might consider paying for a playoff format if it didn't have any commercials, but I am not going to pay for the same BCS crap we have now. Could you imagine if they started charging for the super bowl?

I know ABC & ESPN are sister channels, but its sad that the Rose Bowl is not aired on ABC anymore.
