BOULDER – Colorado Buffaloes head coach Mike MacIntyre announced the dismissal of defensive end Frank Umu from the program on Tuesday morning. MacIntyre was unable to comment on the reason for this status change, citing “FERPA (The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974) and privacy concerns”.
Umu was initially suspended in August for a violation of team rules and had not played in a game this season. The university’s only comment on the suspension was to deem it a “non-legal matter.”
The 6-foot-4, 295-pound sophomore from Littleton was poised to become a significant contributor to the CU defense this year. He earned the Dan Stavely Award for most improved defensive lineman during spring practices, an honor he shared with Lyle Tuiloma. Umu participated in 11 games last season, lining up on both defense and special teams.
The Buffs were already tasked with replacing eight defensive starters this season, and have lost three other contributors since July. Umu joins defensive back Anthony Julmisse and outside linebacker N.J. Falo as the third player to be dismissed this season.
Leo Jackson, Chris Mulumba, Timothy Coleman and Terrance Lang will all have a hand in replacing Umu on the defensive line.
