BOULDER – After back-to-back meetings in which they did not allow a touchdown, the Colorado Buffaloes defense gave one up to Northern Colorado on their first drive of the day. In addition to allowing 21 points through the matchup, the Buffs also had two players ejected for targeting and amassed a total of 14 penalties for 114 yards.

While the Buffs had several offensive holding calls, many of their most costly penalties came on the defensive side of the ball. Pass interference and multiple roughing the passer calls cost CU big chunks of yardage and extended drives for their opponent.

The most impactful penalties were undoubtedly the two targeting calls, which cost the Buffs senior Afolabi Laguda in the first half and junior Chris Mulumba in the second half (Mulumba will also miss the first half of the bout with Washington). Laguda, a team captain and one of the leaders on defense, was ejected for the third time in his career at CU.

Head coach Mike MacIntyre discussed the penalties after the matchup, focusing in on the targeting calls and player safety.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had two (in a game),” MacIntyre said. “That’s the call of the officials and the replay booth. They’ve got a better look at it, they can slow it down. I’ll go by their calls. We’re trying to protect the young men out there and target the correct way. We’ve got to do a better job of making sure our guys get lower. Sometimes they’re trying to get up there and hit the passer while they’re throwing it and they come down. We’ve got to do a better job of that.”

Linebacker Drew Lewis addressed the penalty-filled bout after the game, indicating that the Buffs would work to clean things up before their tilt with Washington.

“I think it was a lot of mental errors,” Lewis said. “The offside, false starts and the ejections just comes with being disciplined and knowing when to lay off the receiver if he’s defenseless.”

Senior outside linebacker Derek McCartney echoed that sentiment, stating the Buffs needed to be more prepared moving forward.

“We just have to be more disciplined,” McCartney said. “That is a part of not coming ready to play today. We have to make better decisions and that is really what it comes down to.”

MacIntyre backed the play of his defense, commending their overall performance.

“We gave up two deep balls. If you take away two of those long balls and three late-hit penalties, then they don’t have many yards at all. We held them to 273 total yards.”

The hefty number of penalties did not cost CU the game today, but they will have to be more disciplined moving forward. Losing two defensive starters against Washington would amount to big trouble, and the Buffs cannot afford to have as many missteps as they head into Pac-12 play.
