My vote - Ben Burney.
Burney is a solid choice given his injury problems and the fact that he had to change positions to safety to get on the field. He's picked it up pretty fast and it's great to have him in on passing downs.
Burton and Herrod should both get some votes, as well. Simas, too.
It needs to go to the whole team after tonight's effort. They played their hearts out.
There really only is five players in the running, IMO:
Really tough call between all of them. Mohler would be a great story with his efforts to get eligible but he only "played" for 2 years and didn't get enough PT, IMO.
Picking between Smart, Burney, and Burton could be real tough, as all three had big concerns that proved their heart, determination, and perserverance.
The award still only goes to a Senior, correct?
Yes. That's what I was writing when I saw your comment about who was in the running.
I thought everyone was eligible, however, only seniors have won it. It's tough to give out a fan-award like this unless maybe the guy was going to the league (and everyone knew it).
It goes to a senior only through tradition.
Herrod's got another year.
I see this honor going to Jeff Smart or Ben Burney.
ben burney get's my vote:smile:
I'd say Smart. He is an undersized former walk on who has earned starting or significant playing time for 4 years. He is extremely heady and despite his lack of physical gifts is always in the right place.
Nobody on the Burton band wagon?
I agree that Smart has done the most with the least in his time here at CU, and Burney has been a very reliable player, coming back from injury, and switching positions is all impressive.
Burton played alot his freshmen year with some big plays, decent amount his sophomore year, fractured his tibia, then was academically ineligible but practiced hard for the scout team won the Iron Buffalo award for LB, then was a key player last season and earned the starting job this year and the Hale Irwin Award for most improved DB/LB and the Iron Buffalo again for LB.
Add to that juggling his football and school with a wife and 2 kids. Both Marcus and Jeff are very deserving. Both of these guys represent the best of what being a Colorado Buffalo is about.
Yeah didn't mention that because I wasn't sure what the other guys personal family situations was. But definitely proves how determined he was to finish school and be a leader on the field.
I think a case for Burney, Smart or Burton can all be justified. They'd all be worthy of the Buffalo Heart Award
I would vote Burton.
But Smart or Burney would be fine choices too...
Burton based on recovery from a bad academic situation and handling a family.
