TWICVB Week 4
This is a really good tournament.
Whatever team wins is a legit Top 10 and Sweet 16 probable.
We will see what this team is made of this weekend. Hope what was said about Nicole Edelman last weekend was true--just resting her. They need her this weekend.
Buffs lose set one to South Dakota 25-18. It is Gabby Simpson setting for the Buffs. (Nicole Edelman in uniform but sitting on the bench.)
15-12 Buffs in set 2. TO SD
Buffs coming back strong in set 2- now 23-16. TO SD. Nice run of (I believe) 5-6 points on Kelsey English's serve midway through the set.
South Dakota now on a small run- 23-19 Buffs. TO Buffs.
Buffs fall apart and lose set 2 26-24.
South Dakota looking like a good defensive club, and Buffs are helping by not getting many good swings in (lots of dinks), and many of the ones they do attempt are missing.
Buff lineup so far has been pretty consistent with last week's tournament- G. Simpson setting, T Simpson and J. Hayes outside hitters (S. Shadley in for Hayes for serving and back row rotations), K. English and A. Pfefferle middles, C. Simpson libero and N. Ortiz Ruiz on rightside.
In addition to Nicole Edelman, Alexis Austin hasn't played yet.
Looking at stats through 2 sets, Buffs being outhit .328 to .205. Also being outblocked 4-1. (One block is VERY low for the Buffs.) Both sides have 6 aces, a pretty high number through 2 sets.
Set 3 starting- the only change to the lineup looks to be K. Cuff in for K. English as one of the middles.
16-13 Buffs in set 3. TO SD. Interesting substitution as Kelsey English came in for Neira Ortiz-Ruiz for the back row. (I assume mainly for her serve.)
SD coming back some- 20-18 Buffs. TO Buffs.
23-21 Buffs- TO SD. SD came back to tie it 21-21, but Buffs get side out and a point behind A. Pfefferle's serve.
Buffs hold on 25-22 in set 3, and are still alive in the match.
The Buffs did a lot better defensively in set 3, holding SD to .075 in hitting and getting 4 blocks in that set alone.
Buffs down 10-6 in Set 4. TO Buffs
19-15 SD. TO Buffs. The Buffs had a little run to get within two, but it's gone bad again. Buffs definately trying every lineup- it looks like late in this set A. Austin is in for J. Hayes.
Buffs lose set 4 25-22, and the match 3-1. They did tie it up at 19 behind a nice service run by S. Shadley, but SD obviously then went on a run of its own, while the Buffs had a couple service errors. Hopefully they can put this one behind them, and be ready for a challenging double header tomorrow against Illinois and Creighton.
Wow. What was Kritza thinking? Edelman better be injured because G. Simpson should have been taken out of that match for at least one set to see that you have to set the middles so the other team's defense can't camp out on the pins. Smh
I would not be surprised if the number of kills by the middles is under double digits. G. Simpson would not set the middle even on a good pass (which was few and far between today). What does Kritza do? Take out your senior middle English because it's obviously her fault she is not getting any swings in the match. Simpson, to her credit, made the adjustment in the latter half of Game 4, but by then it was too late.
This match was lost because of coaching decisions. Ortiz-Ruiz should not be a full rotation player. She could not make a dig even when the ball was hit directly at her. How did English become the first defensive option off the bench? Her serve does not mean she can hit out of the back row or play decent defense. Although, she made the digs Ortiz-Ruiz could not make. CU does not have one DS that can serve and play the back row for 3 rotations?
CU waited too long to put Austin in the game. Her first swing was into the outside pin. That was all rust, BUT her first play was solid block. Her first kill was when everyone in the gym knew she was being set, and Austin still put the ball down. I like Hayes and her fire, but she can't do what Austin is capable of doing.
It is game 4. CU is down 1-2. Kritza had all 3 freshman, Hayes and C Simpson, and English playing in the backrow, and they wonder why they are losing 6-10 in the fourth set. WTF?!?!?
George's first hire needs to be womens volleyball.
What a mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had thought about taking our camper and heading to Omaha for this weekend but we had to change plans. I'd have probably blown a gasket at this match had I been there. In the second game, Buffs up 24-21 and they lose... dropping 5 straight points. WTF! They really need to learn to close. And it looks like they forgot to pack their block and their defense when they left Boulder.
If they don't figure things out for tomorrow they will be chewed up and spit out in those matches.
Well- definitely need to be South Dakota fans the rest of the year. (Assuming we can do OK in conference, don't want to have a bad RPI hit come tournament selection time keep us from a tournament berth, like the Wyoming loss almost did to the Buffs last year.) Although only 4-5 going into the game, SD looked very solid, especially defensively and (although it's hard for me to tell on the computer) on their serve.
My guess is that Nicole Edelman must be fighting some illness or injury, as both last weekend and today she was sitting on the bench the whole match instead of standing next to the rest of the team. (I believe there was an article or video in the Daily Camera over the summer discussing her having back surgery late last year. If that is acting up, hope its nothing serious for her.)
Defensively, I'm also wondering if Gwen Herring, one of two defensive specialists on the roster this year, is OK. I would have thought we'd have seen her today, especially with the serve receive and passing issues the Buffs were having. Hopefully she's OK injury-wise. (I saw her hurt her leg during a match a couple weeks ago, but she was able to play last weekend.)
I'm definitely with MOBuff that I'd like to see Alexis Austin, if near 100%, playing a lot more. I just don't see anyone else on the Buffs (maybe other than T. Simpson) who can hit it like her. (I believe an earlier thread here mentioned she might have a foot injury she's recovering from, so maybe she just isn't able to go a full match at this point.)
Assuming it is an injury issues with Nicole Edelman (and possibly 2-3 other key contributors), I think we'll need to be patient with the "quarterback" now being a freshman EARLY in her 1st season, especially with the bulk of the other players around her also being freshmen or, (except for C. Simpson) sophomores who were lightly used last year. Hopefully, any injuries aren't too bad. I know in one of the earlier post-match interviews the Coach mentioning, without being specific, something to the effect she's trying to make sure players are physically ready for Pac 12 play.
As I mentioned in an earlier post above, hopefully the Buffs can take it to Illinois and/ or Creighton tomorrow. Although the Buffs will definitely need to play a lot better than today to do it, A victory against either of them will be better than any non-conference win last year and constitute a "high quality" win selection committees like to see, and might counteract most if any damage done from this loss. And, probably more importantly, give them more confidence going into what will be a challenging conference schedule. I was a little impressed the Buffs came back to win game 3 after losing game 2 in spite of having 23-16 and 24-20 leads, which must have been a little demoralizing.
I shelled out the $5.99 to watch online. I had also thought about driving to Omaha, but changed my mind. Glad I did if they are going to play like this.
The team that played today will get eaten alive in the Pac 12. From what I saw, South Dakota was quicker and wanted the match more than CU did and it showed. CU let the second set get away and had a chance to close the 4th set.
If they can't knock of Illinois or Creighton tomorrow, they definitely will not be competitive in the Pac 12. I thinking Edelman is having back issues because of the article over the summer. I know Austin has had a foot injury.
I figured this match would be a warm up for the next two and never thought that we would lose.
That was my thought as well. South Dakota is now 5-5 on the season.
