Cal is trying to kill its football program - new GPA standard

Good stuff Buffs. As always, a pleasure posting here. Sorry I'm not a Nub.

Moreover, sorry we don't play you this year in football. We could use the extra W. See you here in BBall:

Thu-Sat. Jan. 28-30 CALIFORNIA, STANFORD

believe me, nobody is more sorry that you don't play us this year than we are. You see, the way the league sets this stuff up, we either play you or Stanford. Would much rather play you.

That's a lot of rage for a state school guy.

Do you think he's still angry he didn't get into Stanford after all these years ?

That's all you could come up with from the cozy confines of Lamorinda? I'm embarrassed for you. I hope CSU doesn't beat you again (in everything) this year. My CU friends in SoCal would go nuts again. They're already talking about stopping all donations...

you're right... i jogged to 1st. i didn't leg it out. i guess i'm just tired.

i don't mind cal... i'm surrounded by alums. i'd estimate that less than 5% of the cal grads i've met even follow football. at that abysmal OT game with the 2 dozen touchdown passes or whatever, i sat next to a cal season ticket holder. he asked me what the cal qb's name was. he asked me what conference CU used to be in. he asked me what cal's record was. and, then, he asked me if CU had ever been any good. that left a mark, even from such a dedicated fan.

another of my favorite cal archetype is the aging hippie couple that still fancies themselves as "of the people." i usually just let them blather on, but, as i sat under misters next to a fancy imported tile pool in the friendly confines of lamorinda, some of this variety decided to educate the rest of us on world affairs. they prattled on about how china isn't a threat to the US and they "dared" anyone to prove otherwise. so i did. systematically, with facts, historical references, and personal anecdotes and observations. when i was done, the entire party had gone silent and had watched wordlessly as i destroyed their affected suburban leftist world view.

the cal hubby was reduced to stuttering platitudes about giving peace a chance. the wife patted his hand sympathetically. i actually felt a little guilty about it aftewards. wrecking such a carefully constructed delusion was unnecessary on my part. so, when i pretend that someday we may be good again, and you suggest we can't even get past the sheep and all the rest, you are poking at the delusions that keep the lights on here. i hope you feel guilty.

Nice essay. Truth be told, I'm a SoCal bear. Nobody really gives a rat's ass about NorCal. It doesn't matter whether you're a NorCal Bear or Buff. NorCal sucks. The weather is pretty cool sometimes.

As you probably have an affinity for Boulder, I have one for Berkeley. Doesn't mean the folks that reside there (or their politics) match our own. I'm glad you set your neighbors straight. They deserved it. I hope you ate meat at the BBQ and printed out flyers single sided while professing your love of nuclear power. A story about crossing their spacious lawns in sport mode with your SUV will garner pos rep. Don't give two ****s. Good luck against CSU in football and during your entire basketball season. Things are fun here when the Buffs are happy.

I thought you were face down getting violated. Guess not, you pussies talk about me following through. As it is Flukes, don't fall out of a tree and you know you're our homie.

Further, I'm gonna lay some serious wood down. It's been a couple of years now so wtf...right? fUCLA and Cal wanted you in the PAC for Academic reasons. Academic reasons only. You sucked then and you suck now in athletics. The thought was that you could excel in the PAC within 3-5 years. We had to convince furd that you were legit in astronomy as we both wanted you for comp lit and other English language publications (or some such BS that we called it back then). USC hated your addition. They still do. Feel free to follow up in whatever fashion you feel necessary. If I recall correctly, Oregon State voted you in too-but only because they could kick your ass in sports. Still, better than the BIG right? Besides, we needed some skiiing championships. Thx!

Laying down major wood?!? GMAFB!

You know you are holding back from boasting about the USN&WR lists and other academic rankings that serve to comfort you people at night.

I really, really want to hear more about Berkelium and other vanity additions to the periodic table. Boy oh boy, that kind of thing really puts Cal on the map as a public ivy. I'm pretty sure Cal invented the term 'public ivy' as a crutch. Face it. Topping the public ivy list is sorta like winning the Special Olympics. Everybody feels good about a Special Olympics story, but deep down everyone knows that there is another gold medal out there that has more value because it has no qualifying conditions attached. I can't wait for Cal to invent some kind of unique category for itself that involves a hybrid metric of Rivals stars, standardized test scores, and admission standards. If you can't win, just change how you measure success.

It's every Cal's fan's lament that there aren't more Asian kids who excel at football. If there were, Cal would be a powerhouse in the Pac.

Certainly you can come up with a talking point that is more substantial and meaningful than this "founding member of the Pac" bull ****. You couldn't evict CU as dead weight from the Pac 12 conference if you tried. I offer Wazzou as exhibit A. Besides, Cal fans are lovers, not fighters.

Face it. Berkeley is kind of a dump. It's not quite Oakland, but it's close and getting more Oakland-like with every wave of BART passengers exiting the Shattuck station. The grime and lack of parking in your fair city makes up for the rapidly aging and ugly, yet over-priced housing stock. The university itself is a bubble of public welfare surrounded by grime, Top Dog, and Haas business school students who are destined to sacrifice Cal's traditional values with greed, short-sightedness, and massive amounts of debt.

When the Hayward Fault eventually rocks your world, topples your campanile, and changes the sight lines within your stadium, you'll always have those fond memories of the sixties and seventies, when Cal used to be a place that stood for something cool.

The next time CU plays Cal in football, we'll kick your ass. Deep down you know that Colorado is due for a boom cycle. Our dip**** administrators woke up, hired an AD who is adored and is actually doing something to improve CU football fortunes. Meanwhile yours continue to collectively make life hard on Dykes.

PS: **** Stanford and USC. I know the only reason you mentioned them in your post is because of some deep rooted Freudian envy.

Sorry I'm late to this party. I've been busy laying face down in my own vomitus. That is to say, when I'm not getting humped in all my orifices while in various submissive positions.

I have a few minutes still in this airport bar so here's my take:

Firstly, **** all of you. Like, every last one of you.

As to the question of will this impede our abilities to compete? Well, that remains to be seen. If it does, we sure are going to miss the glory days of the last few years when we defeated nobody of consequence while recruiting academic risks in the process. Most of our alums feel positive about this and the more negative ones remain cautiously optimistic. FWIW- All of our athletic teams traditionally perform very well in the classroom save football, basketball and perhaps baseball. This occasionally happens when you are one of the founding members of the current PAC 12 and have twice the sports teams as a Colorado. The thought process is to apply these expectations to the more popular and revenue generating sports. It is what it is and we're rolling with it. In fact, the last two classes of both football and basketball have already turned the corner and those programs have proactively recruited student athletes with higher GPAs. We'll see what happens on the field and on the court in 15/16 but we're landing more and more recruits from the South, Texas, the Midwest and East coast as well as California so it seems the model is to cast a wider net as the criteria for athletic admissions strengthens.

Yes, this year we've lost several 4* commits in football and several in basketball due to academic shortcomings but we landed two 5* recruits in basketball and 18 commits so far in football-several of which will be 4* as they head into their senior year so it's all good. Thanks for your concern. Have a nice day.

For football, the real concern is this year as we focus on the upcoming schedule; Texas in Austin, UW in Seattle, Utah in Salt Lake, UCLA in LA, SC at home followed by Oregon in Eugene and furd in Stanford. No easy task but we should be fine as long as a defense-any defense takes the field. I'm sure you can empathize with us there. Regardless, you go on and worry about Hawaii, UMass, CSU and Nichols State. Better hope lil' brother doesn't push in your caca again this year or worse; you lose to one of the other 3 teams. That kind of result may call for the PAC to "off you" and send you to a lesser conference. Let's be honest. Nobody in the PAC wants to see you get relegated to the Mountain West and be Air Force's bitch.

Finally, and in this Mountain Buff type of post, I'm happy that we distracted you from your rival CSU for just a bit. Always thought you guys were better than that. We gave you Utah-do something with that. I followed CU through the 80s and 90s. I know your history. I know your pride. I know your campus. I know your grads. I know your geography. I know your women. I know your Burritos.

Stop focusing on Cal. You won't get any of our cast offs or be able to spin anything your way. Similar but different schools hippies. We just landed huge donations for a swimming complex, a tennis complex and the astronomy department. Alumni funding is the sh*t! Cut the cord with the Fort Collins games too. Crush Utah in football. Crush ASU in BBall. Be a Big 8 relic or be something new-something the world has never seen. You have new facilities, a great location and a legacy yet you're ****ing that up. You're the only school with a beautiful front range, skiing and hiking that's world class. I could get ****ed up every day and show up to work late and I could do a better job selling your ****. You're so completely a PAC 12 school and what we envisioned but I wonder if you realize that before you are kicked out?

It's all in your hands Buffs. The future is yours. You still miss inbred & meth using Big posters or do want reality bitches?

-Bear

Witty, succinct and to the point. What Stanford grad did you hire to write this?

If CU athletics sucked then and sucks now, then why does CU have exactly the same number of NCAA championships as both Cal and UCLA since the inception of the Pac12? Shouldn't Cal and Fucla have twice as many since you have "twice as many sports?"

I think it bothers this one that we can't really work up a good hatred toward cal. It is like hating the colorado school of mines-- a bunch of folks decidely uninterested in sports but still yearning for acceptance among those that do.

usc, Oregon, America's stripper u, and uw-- these are programs that generate a real and lasting hate.

Too droll.

Thanks for the insight. I didn't realize that it was such a complicated scenario. I just figured that, when the PAC came begging in '93 and CU said **** off, it took 20 years to build the confidence to come calling again. An invite to share equally in revenue when CU hadn't won in.... Forever?!
