There wasn't a doubt in Larry McAtee's mind that his golf game, which had taken him to all-conference honors in the Big Eight Conference in 1966 when he played for the University of Colorado, would lead to a successful career on the pro tour.

There was good evidence for his beliefs. McAtee and CU teammate Hale Irwin were consistently beating the state's veteran golf establishment and were causing the media to write about a changing of the guard in the state's amateur golf scene. In 1965, McAtee had become only the third golfer in almost 100 years to win the state match-play title at least three years in a row.
